Some of my favourite Crossovers · 11:14pm Dec 21st, 2016

The exceptional ScarletWeather wrote another one of her amazing blogs, this one about how not to do a crossover.

Which got me thinking about my personal favourites and why I like them.

So head below the cut to get a bunch of my fave crossovers and why you should read them.

Alright, starting from the top of my search results and moving down:

horizon's The Iridescent Iron Rat is based on the sci-fi series "The Stainless Steel Rat" and is absolutely beautifully done. It fits the style and feel of the books to a perfect T.

Capn Chrysalids World of Ponycraft is another solid one, This I can't say if it fits the source material or not being the only person under age 80 who has not play WoW but I love the bombastic feel of it. Everything feels bright and vibrant and exciting and really captures the sensation of a videogame.

The Rummy Business of Old Blooey by Cloud Wander. Oh god, where do I start? Do I mention that I adore Jeeves and Wooster? Do I mention you need no prior knowledge to enjoy this? Or do I focus on the characters? How hilarious Blueblood is as an affable goof, or how well he does dialogue?

Alexmagnet and Belligerent Sock's A Turnabout in Kind This is stunning and captures the video game feel while still feeling approachable and fun. The characters are bitingly funny and sharp by turns and I can vouch that it's being worked on and will be updated again!

Doctor Whooves and the House of Daring by Paleo Prints. Really, any of Paleo Print's Doctor Whooves stories are all exceptional and flow really nicely from one to another.

The Implicit Neighs by FanofMostEverything. This is another one where I don't know the source material but never once felt out of my depth. FoME beautifully weaves a story of our favourite ponies living in a different world and thriving in it.

Filly Fantasy IV - The Return of Magic by The Wyld Stallynz Any fans of the final fantasy series should definitely look at this one. It's a great tribute to the original with it's own unique twists and turns. This one hews closer to the original story moreso than others, but that's not a bad thing by any means.

War in the Pocket by King of Beggars Is it really a crossover, or is it a mad adventure that everyone should read? Who knows.

The Unicorn at Hogwarts by Saphroneth This one is very amusing, Twilight and Spike inadvertently wind up in the wizarding world and take it by storm. From arguing over her rights, to teaching wizards about Punnett Squares, this is worth checking out for any HP fan or even those who dislike it.

The Curious Incident of the (Robot) Dog in the Night-time This one is a bit confusing, it's a crossover in one sense, but in another is a wholly unique story. I love it and exhort others to read it though so in the list it goes!

My Little Starcraft: Friendly Fire is Magic By DuncanR Where do I even start. This was one of the first crossovers I remember reading and even though I know little to nothing about Starcraft it immediately sucked me in. All our favourite ponies are here in places we may not expect. I really hope DuncanR comes back to this one someday.

The Rise and Fall of the Dark Lord Sassaflash I can't mention crossovers without mentioning this beautiful piece. It's ponies and HP Lovecraft and Dromicosuchus pulls it off brilliantly.

There's the first handful of so many more pages, but let me know if you guys would like to see more stuff like this. Do you want to see more of my favourite crossovers? My favourite FO:E Fics? (That list is very small) My favourite Sad fics, romance, comedy, fics involving Pinkie Pie? Some of those would have to be narrowed down since I read a lot of comedy.

Better yet, why not snag a story from my voluminous favourites shelf and ask me about it, or try reading it yourself and tell me what you thought.

Oh, lookie lookie, a pluggie! Thanks!

World of Ponycraft has the honor of being the first pony story I read and what essentially got me into the fandom. Darn you, Chrysalids!

It's an honor to be on your short list. And for the record, the closest I've come to playing World of Warcraft is playing the original RTS and watching videos of Hearthstone.

As for other crossover recommendations, I have to give a nod to alarajrogers's Next of Kin to Chaos continuity. She's been writing fiction about Q for decades. Extending it to include Discord was as inevitable as it is awesome.

CCC's Caligula's Legacy is a fascinating reinterpretation of Equestria through the lens of the webcomic Erfworld, but familiarity with the latter is quite necessary to enjoy it.

GroaningGreyAgony's Riverdream at Sunset: a Manuscript is purest beauty and deserves vastly more love than it's ever received.

And while not on Fimfiction, ChrisTheS's Star Mares, which starts here, not only makes a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away work in Equestria's future, he also creates a fantastic and enjoyable cast of original characters who bumble their way through the ponified original trilogy.

“So, uh, Murderface--how was it with that Queen Chrysalis chick ?”

“Huh? I don’t know what you’re talking abou—“

“Ah, don’t lie, dere, bro, you were totally skijorin’* her all night.”

“How did you--? I mean no I wasn’t!”

“Dude yøu butts-diåled us øn yøur smårtsphøne ånd I set ups de cønference cålls.”

“Yeah it was on Skype, we all saw it.”

“Well, excepts for me ‘cause you know I gots da Nokia phone? Wit da Windows operating systems? So alls I gets is da audios, but deys pushing outs a patch next months and—“

“Shut up Toki. Yeah, so, what’s it like havin’ four ankles crossed behind your neck?”

“Guys, look, I--I was drunk and…”

“Since when would you do something drunk that you wouldn’t do sober?”

“Well I could’ve JUST STARTED, okay? Now can you guys please --”

“Hey, I t’inks Murderfåce gøts de tender feelings før de grøupie! NØBØDY MÅKE DE FUNS ØF MURDERFÅCE’S GRØUPIE Ø-KÅÅÅÅYYYY?... “

“Guys! Guys! It’s just…oh man, you’re not gonna tell everybody I screwed a horse, are ya?”

“A horse? What’re ya talkin about dere?”

“Murderface, dats wasn’t a horse.”

“Wh—what?”

“Nah, Chrysalis is a Changeling. That’s like…some kinda…insect-thing…”

“You mean--?”

“Yeah dude: you spent last night havin’ sex with a giant cockroach.”

“Oh thank GOD!”

“Dat good eh?

“No…I mean, yeah, but…I’m just glad I’m not, like…a furry, or anything…”

“Øhø, Murderfåce is de furrys! Åre yøu feelings yiffy, Murderfåce? Whåt’s, like, yøur spirit ånimål, Furryfåce?...”

“Shut up Skwisgar: screwin’ a giant bug isn’t furry. It’s metal. In fact, it’s hardcore.”

“Yeah but I sure hope dey used protection, like maybe a giant can o’ Raid. Heh! Raid! Talk about a buzzkill!—“

“Shut up Pickles. Nah, Murderface: I know we kid you a lot because you’re like, the bassist and, well, that IS pretty lame, but that doesn’t mean you’re not metal. In fact last night—I think you were the most metal of us all!”

“Whoa dere…”

“Åre yøu feelings ålright,?...”

“Nathan, did yous just…compliments Murderface?”

“Yeah, I--I guess I did. Come on, let’s go: this place is startin’ to f*ck with my head. And shut up, Murderface!”

“Huh? Why me?”

“I just…didn’t want you to…feel left out—GAH! Let’s get OUTTA here…”

***

Dear Prince of Darkness,

Today I learned that you shouldn’t judge a band member by the instrument he plays. In fact, sometimes even the bassist can surprise you with how hardcore he can--

Wait…

When the f*ck did I start writing to you?

*dat’s like doggy style only yer pullin’ on her hair like it was reins, see?

Also, this is a good list. It's gratifying to have Rat lead it off. I honestly think it's one of my top-tier fics.

Agreed with 4350036 that Riverdream at Sunset deserves the shortlist. There were also some outstanding stories in my 80 Days crossover challenge -- the first one I'd recommend is GaPJaxie's Around the World in 81 Days (And Other Problems Caused by Leap Years), but hardly the last. My reviews give a more detailed look.

Bad Horse's The Magician and the Detective and Thanqol's A Study in Rainbows are both excellent Sherlock Holmes stories, for different reasons; BH's is primarily (though not entirely) a character deconstruction and Thanqol's is a more traditional mystery.

The RCL has also featured half a dozen crossovers, all of which are eminently worthy and some of which have already been mentioned here.

4351359 I was specifically listing fics that I'd read. :twilightsmile:Riverdream is on my list for when i really want a dreamy sorta mindfuck and GapJaxie's is sad tagged, which I tend to avoid ^^; Magician and Detective I'd read but since I didn't want to list all 8 pages of crossover fics, I was a bit more selective ^^;

I'll vote for favorite romance fics (bonus points if you can recommend a good love triangle story where it doesn't end with all three together and there's no single obvious choice). :scootangel:

But you know... whatever you want is fine... :yay:

Have you ever read Bad Horse's The Magician and the Detective? It is a lovely Sherlock Holmes crossover involving Trixie of all ponies, and it is great.

I second Horizon's The Iridescent Iron Rat; I've never read the original work, but I love Horizon's version.

4352034 I have, I mentioned in Horizon's comment actually ^^;

I really reccomend the original series, they're brilliant fun.
