Sunset Shimmer has returned, having travelled between worlds and crossed the dark spaces between dimensions to emerge changed, both more and less than a pony. Driven by a dream of impending doom, she sets out to unite the races of the world, heedless of the destruction that she would bring upon the world in the name of saving it. With the support of the proud zebras of Grevyia she launches an assault upon Equestria that will bring down the princesses and shake the peaceful land to its foundations. Using the power of the ancient Labyrinth Box, she imprisons the four mages who alone can threaten her: Twilight Sparkle, Breaking Dawn, Trixie and Chrysalis the Changeling. Now these former foes must work together to recover their true identities and escape the terrors of their enchanted prison.

With Twilight missing, Applejack and Pinkie Pie enslaved and Canterlot taken, Rarity must take up the mantle of leadership as Regent of Equestria, while Fluttershy braves dragons, deer and griffons in her quest for allies. And, as Sunset's tyranny grows ever more cruel, it falls upon the slender shoulders of the Cutie Mark Crusaders to be the salvation of Equestria.

Equestria is divided into three superpowers: Advanced Unicornia, the Free Air Federation and the Pony Reform League. Despite their mutual dependency on solar energy, these powers engage in zero sum warfare for their own prestige and political ambitions.

Into this world enters Celestial Being, a private armed organisation aiming at nothing less than the elimination of war. Armed with the advanced mobile suits known as Gundams, the six gundam meisters stage armed interventions into conflict zones. But when the whole world brands them terrorists and enemies of ponykind, the meisters must wonder what sacrifices will be asked of them before their mission is complete.

Cut off from the rest of their herd, a family of minotaurs contemplate how low their once proud race has fallen, and wonder how they might ever be saved. Fortunately for them, salvation is closer than they imagine.

Twilight grew up and found her destiny, but there is one pony who feels embittered that it should have been her destiny, her glory. Breaking Dawn, Celestia's former student, is convinced that she is the true Element of Magic and has been robbed of her honours, her fame and most importantly of the love of Princess Celestia without which Dawn is nothing.

Rallying her old friends, Breaking Dawn sets out to bring Equestria's newest princess down and pass the final test her mentor set her all those years ago. As Dawn begins to wreak her vengeance, and Twilight struggles to protect her precious ponies from her elusive adversary, both these students of Celestia embark upon a dark path, paying no heed to the truth that a quest for revenge can only end one way.

Equestria discovers that it is not alone in the universe as ponies from another world make contact; a cruel world, where ponies make war instead of friendship. They claim they wish to make friends with their cousins in Equestria, and offer their aid in dealing with the troubling rise of the violent caribou. But as Twilight Sparkle gets to know their new 'allies' better, and after the Empire's aid leads to the near destruction of an entire race, she begins to doubt that these are the kind of friends Equestria wants or needs.

But the Empire's greed is insatiable, and it begins to look as though only cruel war will prevent Equestria from falling victim to their lust for conquest.

And in Zeal Monarchorum, the heart of the Empire, Chrysalis lurks, plotting the destruction of her pony enemies, bending the Empire to her will, knowing that whatever should happen on the battlefield, she will be the only victor.
