as the two bat pony chariteers, and indeed the lunar gaurd in general are only seen once in the entirty of the shows runtime to my knowledge i've always been under the impresion that they were just regular pegasi under a glamour of some kind
don't get me wrong i like the idea of the thestrals but i seriously doubt if they were actualy a thing in the shows universe they would have been ignored so thourly.
