interesting chapter it was interesting to see Gearing actually outclass by something and not be OP in this. I wonder what did the anervation is doing to his body if it actually affecting his body like that, maybe his soul too. On top of that he got stuck in the bottom of the lake and had to be dragged out IN A Sherlock state, this must really dispel a lot of his mystic of his near invulnerability, even going as far as to cut up parts of his skull. I wonder if the story is trying to down grade him from his impervious OP state to up the anthi on the dangers that he will face for the rest of the story. I wonder why he tried to face off the lazers like that and what he was hopping to do with it, was he expecting that his implants would allow him go thought it? What does he know that Even BJ doesn't know. it was interesting to see swift and Handy showing genuent camaraderie and concern for Gearing.
My concern for the story is that it's starting to cross with the PH story a little much for my liking, I hope the story will still try to be it's own things and mystery to follow.
so something has messed up the white list or was it programed to take out Gearing??
this is a interesting question and who or how?
Gearing is going to be a mess after being trapped under water.

This may be the first time Gearing being outclassed has shown up/ been referenced in the story, but it's not the first time it's happened, from Gearing's perspective at least, and it's certainly not going to be the last. Like how a brotherhood [Steel Ranger in FoE verse] paladin in power armor seems unbeatable going up against a bunch of raiders with crappy pipe pistols, until they run across someone with an Anti-material rifle or Plasma weapons, Gearing's disproportionate threat level is actually only a matter of who he's run into thus far. He's got a set list of attributes, and there are plenty of things that Gearing would be hopelessly outmatched against and have little recourse but to simply run away and regroup. If not entirely flee.
This chapter's just the first time he's run into it on camera. But, in doing so, it DOES start showing some of his upper limits. And, yeah, that was part of the intention with this scene. Metal hide or not, he's still mortal after all. And at least HE is very much aware of that fact. So you're on the right track with the 'down grading' thought. But it's not so much a downgrade, as much as it is helping to establish his functional threat level. Or, in gaming terms, his "character level". And, yes, to lampshade the fact that he's not an 80s action star so not only is the danger very real but it's going to increase as the story progresses, along with the stakes for all involved.
The lasers are another example of Gearing acting upon certain assumptions and/ or information. And while it's not the first time the information was wrong / incomplete, even during the story thus far, it IS the first time his penchant for acting on incomplete information has been shown to come back and bite him in the ass. But he did have a reason for what he tried to do, and it'll become more clear in not only the upcoming chapters, but future ones as well.
For the getting tangled up with the PH story part, don't worry, CwP has it's entirely own thing going on. But FoE and PH are huge backdrops for what's going on in CwP. Sets context etc with the stories shaping each other. Like an anchor connecting Cwp to the verse / other stories. At least that's the intent, but I'm thoroughly confident that by the end of the story it will all make sense on what's going on. And, on the same note, the band of weirdos will be heading off in new frontiers as soon as they conclude business in this part of the world.
After all, by this point [chapter 67] the story is FAR from over. ;)

Ding ding, you're definitely starting to ask the right questions about what's going on/ what happened. And, as for Gearing that'd be an accurate train of thought. Stuff like that isn't simply brushed off. And it's not something easily forgotten.

Welcome to CwP! [ Clockwork Precision ]
Yeah, picking fights without knowing who you're starting a beef with isn't a great way of staying alive in the wastes for sure.
From what I'd seen in the Fallout verse, the Institute had gone great lengths to recover their property. And their hierarchy had a lot of focus on resource management. So from my headcanon, I see a lot of them as cold bean counting bureaucrats always worried about returns on investment. Even distilling humans down to nothing more than resources to be used. So, at a certain point, there crosses a threshold where it's a "sunk cost fallacy" to continue and objectively not worth it anymore, so they stop. Think Necrons from 40k verse.
The cock block of the century when you don't want to have your main character have unlimited fire power with the untouched military ware house in the core so just conveniently revoke his access at the last minute before he notices:)
