Hum, well the flash back was much much more enjoyable this time around giving more of a glimpse of how Grearing was like before becoming a MoA agent and how his life was, rather then the first that I left was really pointless as it just added to generally undefined background with which just added to the Gary aura that he has at times that I didn't like. Now, we bet to see him in his more intimate and his family with a respectable titillating mysteries that make me want to know more about him in bite size chumps which doesn't interrupt with the main story element that I prefer. For the partial resolving between Handy and Gearing was good, I still feel that they would need a good heart to heart between the two of them to clear everything up, because this can't stay like this forever in using Swift as a go between, so it can still crop up again. Having Handy explain in the narration that he was both afraid and at aw with Gearing's lethal potential along with his unsettling inequin characteristics didn't help matter. I hope you will go more into this type of short snippets of flash back format rather then the full chapter long length ones, which I feel shows more about guessing in Gearing's past.

For the “Jail Bird” set of chapters, there was a lot of relevant information that was delivered in that series of events. The only other way of really doing it would be a massive info dump/ monologue from Gearing and, really, that’s not entertaining and provides nothing from a world building side of things.
An example of one of the important bits that was brought up in that set was expanded upon in chapter 37 “Freight Cars”. The entire thing with his injuries, treatments, and the dangers that means? That has far reaching consequences.
Though on top of people not catching the various tidbits, with the massive hampering to the posting schedule I also have the concern about people not being able to make certain connections to things that were done, said, or revealed earlier in the story.
And, like how I did with “Jail Bird” set of chapters, this flashback / memory of sorts [in chapter 48] is housing a few ‘tip of the iceberg’ tidbits of information for some things that’ll be brought up more in detail later.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say this, but apparently "I dun goofed". You see, in the original description of him when Handy had discovered Gearing I'd had a couple lines talking about his coloration, markings, etc. I've gone over it again, since you'd asked about color, and... yeah, it's not there. In Chapter 1. I'll be fixing that soon, I promise!
To answer the question, Normal protectaponies are more like that steel/ iron look with more gray colors (unless they got paint jobs at least that's my head cannon). As for Gearing? He's made of brass. A very VERY shiny polished mirror like brass. Almost that golden sheen level of brass color? Incidentally that's also why he was so set on doing something that happens in a latter chapter [Horse of a Different Color].
Also, it may seem like it but it's not really since everyone that reads it probably thinks it themselves, but the Institutes involvement is far from over.
I've fixed the 'oops' in chapter 1 as follows to give a more clear picture of Gearing earlier on.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention OmegaUltric and sorry for the confusion!
Hopefully this revelation/ clarification will make his chemical bath decision later on make more sense to people.

The cap issue is a bit of an ongoing thing. Given that Gearing is 'prewar' by current standards, his entire view of economics has been made pretty much useless. So he's going to have to start from the ground up on the value of things. And, as for why his PipBuck didn't inform him of the value of things, and present it in caps, that wasn't an oversight on my part. That was actually intentional and chapter 48 actually reveals a big piece of the puzzle on that. And, as for the filly, yeah... they may be young, but they've been in this world far longer than Gearing has, and have been through many horrors in their own right already.

To say Gearing has a soft spot for foals would be an understatement. This act is only the tip of the iceberg for the guilt he experiences at not stopping the war from consuming the world. His tactics and forethought get delved into more as the story progresses, so him hiding the bodies will slowly make even more sense as time goes on. And, as far as Handy... Well... Handy's a character alright. He has his own reasons for doing things and his own desires and internal conflicts he had to contend with. Not to mention OUTSIDE factors that start warping his way of thinking and acting. Which, like many things in this story, gets more revealed as the story progresses.
