Well this was a much more tolerable flashback this time around which didn't interrupt the flow of the previous chapters and actually had more interesting bits on Gearing's back story, finishing off the a bit back to the present to satisfy my preference to the main story arc. It was interesting to see how Gearing tried to join the Shadow Bolts, but I have a hard time getting the animosity aimed toward him in the first place. A source of curiosity sure and disdain sure, out right disgust I have a hard time getting that even in the the stress of the war situation. I could get that he scares ponies with his inequine strength a resilience, but I would only see it as a problem if Gearing completely disregard his teammates limits while in training, or dismisses their physical pains, simply because his threshold for pain is leagues beyond them, where his strengths actually becomes a determent to the team.

The animosity I was working with here was being built on a foundation of hints that'd been dropped through the various dialogs on how Gearing wasn't the only one that had been keeping track of how everyone else was doing during the trials. The Shadowbolts were a prestigious unit and, as had been hinted at / mentioned in both reports and by the pegasi themselves, they had a real concern of losing out on the positions and getting replaced by robots. Coupled with the unfairness of all of their hard work meaning nothing because machines were going to be taking their places. Fear and jealousy have made individuals do many horrible things, that they wouldn't normally do. And this is definitely one of those cases. And one thing that they caught onto, that Gearing hadn't was what his full score list was likely to be.
I have his actual chart of scores planned out, and I might have it brought up/ revealed later, but wasn't really pertinent for this part/ wouldn't make sense to reveal it now.
And as far as flashbacks / the past: History has a way of not wanting to stay dead and buried. Especially for someone as haunted as Gearing.

Hi OmegaUlfric, welcome to Clockwork Precision. I hope you are enjoying the story! For Handy/Gearing interaction... there's a long way to go with that still as it develops [it's still developing with even current chapters].
As for Gearing and what he is, it's explained a bit more in chapter 2, and even more so as the story goes on. But, you are right, his flank is indeed blank/ markless.
