Oh there's definitely someone pulling the strings, and a few others have made pretty accurate guesses on that too. :)

I'm glad you caught on to that comparisons between Gearing and Handy, because that's part of what I was wanting to cast light on with this chapter. That there are some parallels between the two, more than either of them would typically admit. They both have their own ways of doing things, which causes them to butt heads. And that's not going to go away, but Handy is actively trying to keep in mind what he's recently learned, or more accurately, accepted, about Gearing. So this might just be a honeymoon period before things return to their regularly scheduled volatility. Only time will tell. xD
I hope your studies went well! I know how nerve racking that can be.

ok this chapter is a real rollercoaster ride of emotions. so much going on and a good bit of luck.
a grate chapter amazing righting team.
Well this had been a fun chapter, enjoyed the action on this one, the scene with AppleSmack was fairly interesting and wasn't too long so it didn't hamper the action too much. I do like the idea that Gearing is visiting the Core I wonder what sort of deal he could make with them and what reasons would they want to really fight each other, or how they could use each other, unless he thinks the AI is insane in it's goals, I would guess the AI would try to convince him to go after Black Jack's pitbuck or maybe go after another objective like that he has something to gain to restore the stable. The only thing that would give me pause in that point in time is the company the AI keeps like Steel Rain(maybe too early) and Sanguine which aren't really likable folks, that and the suicide implants. Hope might be a little more convincing to him, especially with hope much tech it can still produce at that point if it just had the codes could considerably improve the live of a lot of ponies. What I would be wondering is what was the AI doing for nearly 200 hundred years in all that time in just trying counter GoldBlood's countermanding orders? I would take it Gearing wouldn't completely entrust the safety of Equine kind into the AI's power, especially if he witnesses what happen when it doesn't get it's way.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. You've made a lot of valid points there, regarding the various powers in play, but only time and future releases will be able to answer any of that. ;)

Thanks for the heads up, Trooper. I'd wondered about that given the "number of people that have been following along so far" / "what shows up regularly with the statistics" verses what's been shown for the latest update. Though I can't help but wondering how much of that is from people dropping off because of the irregular posting schedule, verses FimFic statistic software nuttiness. It does actually make me feel a bit better having the confirmation that it's at least in part to the later. So thanks again!

The odd numbers and drop off are probably not because of your non-regular release schedule. I release a chapter a week and I noticed it in my numbers. At first it bothered me, but when I noticed that what I read wasn't always tagged I figured I was probably not the only one. I wanted to point it out to you so you do not feel discouraged if it happens to you. I just finally got a chance to finish this chapter and will say I really enjoyed it. I also have to say I was interested in your take on the one elevator accident as I worked on cargo weapons elevators almost a lifetime ago and understand the safety systems used on them. I have to admit part of the appeal of Gearing for me is that I work industrial maintenance IRL and he seems like someone I could have worked with over the years.

Well the heads up was definitely appreciated and you were right in your guess that bringing it up would help, because it definitely has. So mission accomplished!
I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter! I know it may seem weird to some that I put in details like that, and try to pepper in realism all over the place in general, but that's kind of my style. Mainly because, at least in my opinion, it provides a solid ground on which to build the rest of the verse. It "seems real" / believable because it's based on reality to an extent. It helps with the "suspension of disbelief" and to easing people into the worlds I make by keeping things making sense as much as possible. Which especially applies to Gearing (there's been a lot of things that I've had to address that we're in the original source material). And as far as his mechanical mind and 'nerd cred', it helps that I know lots of tinkerers and Makers, so I try to add in enough to lend him credence, without boring the general population to death. A lot of the times most people would simply skim over it anyway. But the ones that do notice and understand, will appreciate it all that much more. Kind of like little easter eggs.
