Want to comment on this chapter but not sure what to say. Lot of heavy stuff here. It was good, just heavy.
Wild I can empathize with, and see why she's doing what she is doing. I also like that Number really seemed focused on doing right, even if I disagree about what right is.
Hoping the best for Mel. I'm wondering if there is some sort of romantic bond between her and Dan. Nothing was said, but it just had that kind of feel the way he acted with her.
Sunset Blessing seriously needs some mental help. Her emotions are all over the place and unstable. Feel sorry for Tom trying to reach out to her humanity and finding out she is a murderer.
She suppressed the urge to sign
Sigh.
Gripped.
I have to wonder how Blessing will react to humanities own magical awakening. If she thinks that only those who are rehumanized will have magical capabilities, then those who develop magic on their own will come as a true shock. If humans don’t need to be pony to have magic how will that change her beliefs.

She's doing what she always seems to do. She is taking information that seems to go against her beliefs and refurbishing it to fit her world view. In this case she is looking at humanity's magical awakening (guessing the rehumanized count towards that) and saying "that's going to take forever to get anywhere, but whatever, we'll start selectively breeding them for magic"
Technically she isn't wrong. If being able to use magic is the goal then just turning them into ponies is the more efficient way of doing it, but it is interesting that she seems perfectly willing to encourage and push that magical awakening in humans as well as a backup plan.

You also have to take into account the adaptability of humans. Once humans start doing magic on their own, ponies will rapidly be pushed to the side on the basis that anything a pony can do, humans can do just as well if not better. Blessing will change her view initially, then things will come crashing down around her, then we will see what she does.
the half that want to be ponies are either mentally unwell to begin with are could arguable be under the effects of mind control already.
Also why is no one talking about the other nations of equis who would not look favorable on the idea of ponies making a spell that forced them to be ponies.
I could see shimmerists destroying equestria relations with all other countries.
The princesses should publicly call out the shimmerists on the fact that either they are mind controlled or they are the type that are using ponification to runaway from their problems.

There is no reason to assume that Humans would automatically be better at magic than ponies. Even in the real world, plenty of species have specialized abilities Humans don't have and can do things that Humans cannot: how does your sense of smell compare to that of a dog? Of course the author can do anything they want with their story, so the author could theoretically make every human in the story the magical equal of Harry Potter. But I rather doubt that that's where this story is going.

Considering it has been established that awakening is very early stages right now it might take hundreds of years for humans to actively do something with magic. Ponies have full body parts dedicated to magic use they are evolutionary products of magic. It's doubtful that humans would ever match a pony in magic ability without millinia of evolution into something that couldn't even be called homo sapian anymore.
Sunset and Tom have one huge thing in common Phobia and wanting to protect her there daughter.

You have to take a few things in to account. In the origanal story Twilight found out that humans were already magic capable and were not far off from their own awakening, a millennia is what Twilight stated. Dr Connor was the only resident in Lazy Pines who didn’t turn into a pony despite having ETS because his body was passively channeling magic to boost his immune system. You now need to take two things into account. The method that Sunset used to spread ETS was to use people as magic storage in which the build up of magic would pass from one person to another to kick start the transformation spell. For people who only caught the flu stage of ETS before the cure was distributed it is possible that they would have gotten a boost of some sort for their own magical awakening. The other thing is that is was mentioned in the last chapter of the main story that magic is slowly building up in the environment. Although it has been stated that it would take decades to show any real sign of development, out west where there are more ponies than humans there seem to be signs of things moving quicker than originally expected. As magic is generally classed as being self perpetuating - once it gets going it stays going - than exposure to the environment it self will boost humanities magical awakening. It would take a while, but we’re only talking years to maybe a decade or so at the most.
As for humans being better at magic, well ask yourself this. Once humans start using magic the first thing would be to try and denounce the usefulness of the pony communities. That would mean learning how to do things that ponies can do, telekenisis (which would probably be the first thing learnt), how to encourage plant growth and how to manipulate the weather. A mixture of enchanted items and magitech ( magic and technology) would quickly be established to rubbish the effectiveness of what ponies could do. Getting better a magic than ponies would be a matter of pride and a means to take the wind out of the sails of shimmerists, who want all of humanity to become ponies. If being a pony can offer no advantage over being human, than what’s the point.

What you aren't taking into account in is even if magic gets strong in humans it will probably be innately restricted to doing certain things.
Let's use Wild Growth as an example. She has more magic in her than any ten ponies in her town combined. She is restricted to earth pony abilities though. No matter how much she might try she isn't going to fly, levitate anything, or cast complex spells even though she probably has more magic than just about every unicorn. Her biology restricts her, she has no wings to channel the magic for flying, she has no horn to combine runes how she wishes.
Humans similarly don't have a biology set up to do whatever they want with magic. Doctor Conner developed a super powerful magical immune system. That's great and useful, but it seems the limitation of what his magic can do given his biology. Humans aren't just going to be able to do what they want with magic, it will take their bodies evolving over generations to develop active ways of using it and it is unknown what course human evolution will take with magic involved, or what active abilities will manifest. Like the ponies it will be almost certainly restricted to just certain types. But the fact remains that evolution is a slow process and it will take at least centuries if not thousands of years for it to really develop into anything active. The most likely early magic will be some passive effects like the immune system thing with Doctor Conner. And his immune system still was something that developed over centuries.
So no, ponies won't just be pushed to the side by human magic. At least not in anyone livings lifetime. Come back and talk to them about it in 10,000 years and we'll see how things have changed.

The different pony tribes each have different sets of magical abilities. This suggests that even when Humanity magically awakens, Humans won't necessarily have the same magical abilities as any particular tribe of ponies. For example, Jenny's special magical talent, the one linked to her love of fantasy storytelling, so far doesn't seem to resemble any pony magic. Ryan the Human seems to have fear magic, and Tonya the Pegasus has a type of mind control magic rarely seen in any pony other than night ponies or some powerful unicorns. This suggests to me that Humans may have a special talent for mind control.
So while the authors can do anything in the story they want to, I find it somewhat implausible that Humans will be able, for instance, to duplicate the precise magical benefits a horn gives to unicorns, unless and until Humans also develop some sort of technology which duplicates the functions of a unicorn's horn (and the specialized brain functions that allow unicorns to use their horns). The development in the story of such a technology may be a long way off, but any progress towards the development of such a technology would be consistent with the theme that both Humans and Ponies are better off if they develop both magic and technology.

Well, humans not having the necessary biology is one thing, but that could just mean that human magic would be more utilitarian than pony magic. Lacking both the necessary biological outputs and cutie marks would just mean a lack of general direction not a lack of capability, which like I said would be supplanted by both enchanted items and magitech. As for certain magic talents that the transformed are displaying it could be a sign of the types of magic that humans would have been capable of if left to develop on their own. We will just have to wait and see what ASGeek has is store for us it that regard.
This was such an incredible chapter. I am stunned! Halira, you have become a master of storytelling
