Getting about ready to thumbs down this, because the amount of hoops and mental gymnastics you are going through to NOT MENTION LUNA TO SUNSET is getting ridiculous.
Or that Sunset never brings up up Vice Principal Luna.
I mean, your Cadance is awesome, and Shining was really cool here as well, but there's only so much "Characters must be stupid for this plotline" before the audience gets bored and wander off in search of actual plot development in other stories.
9075680 Eh, Sunset is being actively manipulated by Nightmare, which may very well have an effect on her ability to make that connection.
Further, Celestia has had a noted tendency to avoid talking about things that make her uncomfortable. Thus, never mentioning what she considers to be her greatest failure to someone she loves isn't that much of a stretch.
Though that being said it does feel a little unlikely.
9075718 My BIGGEST problem, really, is just how profoundly selfish it makes Celestia out to be.
She is planning on a murder-suicide once Nightmare Moon returns. I'm not clear what her plan was between Sunset running away and Twilight getting her Cutie Mark, but Celestia was very relieved that Sunset came back an Alicorn.
Almost as if she could die without dooming the planet...
Now, while I think it's a stupid plan, it'd just be a thing if she HADN'T revealed this to Cadance. But she did. A VERY large reason why Cadance was freaking out with her Romantimath was because she knew this and foresaw Sunset taking her mother dying very poorly.
Now, Cadance is a teenager, who is in a new relationship, and terrified about Changelings, so I can give her a pass about not talking with Sunset about this. What is les unforgivable is how it seems like Sunset has glossed over SO MUCH of her time in the mirror, that SOMEHOW she mused that there was no Luna in her head but never to Cadance.
In the end, I hate seeing Celestia and Sunset interact. For me it's not heartwarming at all because it's just a lie so Celestia can spend her last years happy.
Honestly, since WTF-is-she-that-she-outclasses-Celestia-so-much-that-she's-now-a-super-alicorn-HOW and NMM is interfering with Sunset's dream because SHE doesn't want to fight Sunset, makes watching this trainwreck worse.
9075680 but she did bring it up and Celestia asked if the two, vice-principal and principal, got along well.
as for her not remembering princess Luna, since the newspaper was mentioning the princess summit it might have focused on Twilight Sparkle. as it was her first official event as a princess, which would also explain how she doesn't seem to know the other mane 6 are also elements of harmony.
9075809 Hrm. I guess I don't remember that bit, just her wondering where VP Luna's counterpart was.
As as for the rest I already commented previously about how very LITTLE Twilight seemed to talk to Sunset, given her lack of question about the EoH, NMM, Chrysalis, Discord, Tirek...
9075680 Even frazzled and exhausted, Celestia would have known better than to agree to that deal. No part of it stops NMM from organizing and plotting more assassination attempts.
This is a great story but Damn is Celestia making things much more complicated for Sunset in the future. Making a deal with a devil is Never a good idea, but desperation can make people do really stupid things and show their true colors. Telling the truth can be good, bad and sit on that weird grey area, but in this case it'll help Sunset a lot more than it'll hurt her, but than again, no conflict means less drama for the story.
The fact that Princess Twilight kept the portal open proves that she wasn't the monster that Cadance thinks she was, Twilight left Sunset on Earth after the Fall Formal because she knew that taking Sunset back to Equestria at that point was the wrong thing to do given that Sunset had to make up for all the wrongs she did on Earth or she would always regret it and then once it became clear to Twilight that Sunset has in fact be redeemed she left the portal open so that Sunset could return when she felt she was ready. Also while Twilight was always there to give advice through the journal she had her own life and couldn't just drop everything and head to Earth all the time and given what goes on around Ponyville. I wouldn't be surprised if the reason she didn't write to Sunset as much was simply because she usually didn't have time, busy dealing with a friendship problem, some monster attack, Discord's antics, Starlight's "problems" or something else entirely. Knowing Twilight I wouldn't be surprised if she often gets so engrossed in an activity of some kind that she flat out forgets to eat let alone remember to hold a conversation with Sunset through the journal.
Which was wear Cadance found herself ten minutes later.

Here's hoping that while Sunset is magiteching up Equestria, she finds time to up the guard's training standards, either directly or through Shining...
Also amazing what trouble just killing treasonous idiots would have saved you. Wonder how much of the nobility will be on Nightmare Moon's side after Sunset starts taking an axe to their 'divine' rights?
Delicious! The confrontation with Nightmare Moon was delightfully dark. So glad to see this updating so fast! Thank you for your work and writing! It's so good!
The noble mare that the blue stallion had been sitting next to a moment ago let out a scream and began to gallop towards the door. Halfway there, the guards standing by the exit subdued her. “You can’t do this to us!” she shouted. “She’s just some common filth! She’s not better than us! We’re nobles! She’s NOTHING!”
Yet she's the one who's an Alicorn.
When he looked back, Sunset quickly shook her head as if to clear it. “Well if that’s what passes for an assassination attempt here in Equestria, doesn’t look like I’ve got much to worry about,” she said, earning a few nervous glances from all the ponies sitting at the front. “So...anypony else want to try and kill me, or should we get things back on track?”
I'd say getting things back on track might work, I don't think we need two assassination attempts in less than 10 minutes.
Despite the fact that she had a point, Sunset rolled her eyes. “Yes, and much like my first attempt at world domination, it was a poorly thought out temper tantrum of a plan that wouldn’t have worked under the best of circumstances. Thank Celestia ponies suck so much at being evil.”
I'm REALLY glad you never met Starlight when she was evil.
“Hey, that’s what heroes like me do, right? Saving the princesses and keeping them happy,” Shining Armor said, earning a little giggle from Cadance.
You're a good stallion, Shining Armor.
Despite how good it made him feel to see Cadance smiling at him, Shining Armor kept himself focused. If he lost this train of thought, he might never get it back. “Well, I’m not going to be a hero compared to the two of you. You’re both leagues ahead of me, but that’s okay. Fighting big scary monsters, saving the whole kingdom, that’s what you’re supposed to do. Big flashy things. But…” Shining Armor went on as his thoughts became muddled, his voice a little hesitant. “Because you’re probably going to be on the lookout for big, flashy things, there’s going to be things that you don’t see coming. Small things, like a bully outside a theater, or some crazy pony with a sword. That’s the stuff I can...deal with. Does that...make sense?”
It's why the Guard exists. The Princesses and the Elements and other things can deal with threats like Nightmare Moon or Tirek, but the Guards are there for more mundane threats.
She took in a deep breath and looked up at her sister’s jailer with heavy eyes. “Nightmare Moon. I’ve come to bargain with you.”
Dormammu, I've come to bragain!
“I shall no longer assault the dreams of Sunset Shimmer, Mi Amore Cadenza, or any pony within the royal house. In return, you will continue to keep my existence and all things related to it a secret, as well as keep your proxies from revealing me to your daughter or anypony else. In addition, when I am released from the moon, you will be the first pony to face me in combat. While happance encounters will be allowed. Should another pony or another group attempt to impede our reunion and subsequent battle, or interfere with it after it’s begun, the contract will be void and your life will end, as will mine should I invade the minds of your family.”
This seems fair, but something about this bothers me.
Gotta admit I wasn't expecting another chapter so very soon, but I'm not complaining!
Space. The empty frontier. Such were the thoughts of Celestia as she voyaged through the dark expanse, propelled by the magic in her wings that simply extended out into the void.
She took in a deep breath and looked up at her sister’s jailer with heavy eyes. “Nightmare Moon. I’ve come to bargain with you.

Now if only she knew a pony who had been possessed by dark magic and been purged. so are we sure Sunset put that idiot ball back together right.

Of course she would ascend, and if she herself contains the power that her mother and Aunt could only wield, well then.

Not too pleased with Celly making that vow. That was honestly a stupid move. You tell the people who need to do their jobs what to do BEFORE you get blackmailed...
The scenario presented chilled Celestia to the bone. Was that what she had truly been hoping for all these years? The idea that Luna was alive within Nightmare Moon had given her hope, but she had ignored the fact that Nightmare Moon was the one controlling Luna’s wellbeing. “Surely, something of the host must survive.”

9075887 Well I mean, it stops her from revealing the truth, but it doesn't stop Cadence. She could still warn sunset, and with how much she's gone against Celestia by now, she might actually do it.
I think a Sunset with a more stabile health might be worth the trade tbh. If only because it actually allows Sunset's character to grow properly.
9318914 Afraid it also condemns her if Cadence shares the information. "As well as keep your proxies from revealing my existence to your daughter or anypony else."
