Letting out a sigh, I dropped the illusion and looked myself over. All back to normal.
Fucking Discord.
Jumping off the couch, I stretched and trotted in a circle. Yep, back to normal. Goodie.
“All better?” Skitter asked from her spot on one of the comfy chairs.
“Yep,” I agreed, “Back to normal. That was the third strangest transformation I have ever had.”
Skitter just kind of tilted her head, “I see.”
“So?” I then asked and moved up to her, gathering my notes back up.
“I have two changelings I can spare, my two best infiltrators. They should be able to find out anything you need to know,” She answered, her wings doing a small buzz, “Not sure it’s necessary, but…”
I raised my eyebrows at her, “Last time a Princess was doing this, her partner turned out to be Chrysalis.”
“And another time it was ‘you’,” Skitter countered and shifted her position slightly, “That turned out well.”
“And I’m not what I look like, and you know it,” I sighed, “Only one that ended up with a normal pony even originally is Twilight Sparkle and that’s because she’s with Sunset!”
That’s two out of three that got in trouble because they got involved with the wrong pony or tricked. I didn’t want it to end up three out of four.
Skitter frowned a bit before she nodded, “I’ll send out the infiltrators like you asked.”
“Thank you,” I said with a smile.
Fern moved over to look at me, almost half my size. I scratched the Timberwolf at the neck and settled down, “I just want to make sure she is who she is.”
Skitter nodded and watched the timerwolf, “He’s getting bigger, sir.”
I grinned and nodded, “He is, isn’t he? Plenty of soil, sunlight and some meat from time to time. Just like taking care of any houseplant.”
Woof.
I scratched at his neck with a smile. Good chlorofiend.
Fern's leaf tongue lolled out and he looked up at Skitter who eyed him with a bit of suspicion.
“Timberwolves are predators. They have eaten changelings before.”
“Fern is harmless.”
“He was harmless. He is starting to get big enough to harm a changeling. Or a pony.”
I frowned at her and then looked at Fern, “Going to do that, planty? Going to gobble somepony all up?” I asked and poked his side.
Wruf!
He pounced me, licking at my face with that leaf like tongue.
“Yes, horribly ferocious,” I laughed and pushed the forest spirit away, “Deadly.”
Fern jumped off me and scrambled to get one of his toys, a squeaky ball.
Skitter shook her head and sighed, “Don’t want you to get hurt after all this. Even less if it happens because of something you trusted.”
“Same thing as I think with Celestia,” I said and tossed Fern's ball, causing him to scramble to catch it, “But this? Humans do this all the time, all through our history and Fern is a good houseplant.”
She just shook her head and jumped off the chair, “Well, if you are sure, sir.”
“I am,” I told her with a smile, “Fern won’t hurt anypony.”
I tossed the ball again and the wood spirit scrambled after it. It was amazing really how dog like he could be.
Skitter nodded and then smiled slightly, “So what will you do now?”
“As little as possible,” I told her with a grin, “No more doing Celestia's job, so I might actually get time to go back to writing again. I’m waaay behind where I thought I would be by now. But for the next week, nothing.”
“Nothing?”
I nodded, “Yep! Starting with, taking Fern to the park and throwing this ball around while getting him some sunshine.”
Skitter nodded and rippled, green fire crawling across her black chitin leaving a white unicorn with a changeling shaped horn on her head, “Want some company, sir?”
“Love to,” I said and bounced the ball over to her.
She caught it in her magic and then quickly threw it away before Fern could get close to her. I grinned, “Skitter, he’s safe! You've known him since I got him. Why does he bother you now?”
“Because he is getting large enough to eat a pony now.”
I rolled her eyes, “You can taste his feelings, right? He’s a big fluffy and happy ball of leaves and wood.”
“Now, yes.”
I rolled my eyes, “Come on, let’s get going,” I said and bounced the ball of the wall, Fern scrambling after it.
AN// Many thanks to FPSCanarussia for betaing this section.
I'm hoping that Clear Skies is on the up and up but I've got a sneaking suspicion that something's not quite right. Hopefully nothing bad, at the very least.
8726956
while i doubt she is a normal pony we can not fully dismiss the idea its more of a passive kind of secret(as in she just not a normal pony is is trying to live a life as one kind of deal)
Laying the ‘Fern is a threat’ bit on a little thick there dude.
Dawwww, Fern is mans best friend
I'd want one, but I'd probably be a horrible caretaker
I'm with the group that I hope that Clear Skies is on the up and up, but due to the story currently not having a major conflict being as Page has finished his week at Celestia's job, I'm going to guess she's not. I'm thinking the Infiltrators are going to come back empty hoofed that she didn't used to exist, with news of a mare in some kind of trouble and Celestia is her figurative and literal shield, or they are going to bring back news of the most lack luster and boring mare ever leading to Clear Skies obviously being a well thought out fake identity.
Or she checks out and just randomly won the lottery on asking somepony out. Then the major conflict will shift to the formation of the guard or something that comes up in the next few chapters. Whatever it is it will most certainly involve Clear Skies as she's a Chekov's Gun at this point.
8726971
If something is not normal about her, I can only hope it's something like that, yeah.
Oh, hi Chekhov! That's quite the gun you have up on that wall! Unrelated question, have you seen Fern lately?
I kinda want clear to be our favorite queeny but celly knows it's her but for some reason still loves her. That would be nice. But hey I'm just some need reading this at 5 in the morning
8726986
Maybe, or maybe not. Skitter originally wanted to kill Fern when he was a pup, and never made a comment against it otherwise. You'd need foreshadowing that Fern was becoming rotten and twisted like normal Timberwolves are, to have it come out of the blue.
SKITTER!!
Clear Skies turns out a villain, Fern gobbles her up. Calling it now.
Hoping too, that Clear Skies only has a passive secret. And that no-one(/pony) provokes Fern.
Edit:
8727254
Yes and Skitter. It's awesome to see you again too.
Any day now I expect a chapter were Fern goes full moonmoon.
This bring back some memories. How many times did I had this very same conversation with some friends regarding my old German Sheppard?
8726956
Ditto.

At least Fern is housebroken. Would a timberwolf have any reason to "go"? Not like plants have much waste to get rid of besides outgassing CO2 or Oxygen depending on time of day (interesting trivia that plants put out CO2 at night). But then that's not really an issue unless Fern hacks up a bone or hair or similar indigestibles, not unlike owls, assuming Fern catches something. I wonder if genderism would have a female timberwolf bristling with flowers? Fern is obviously male, no girly fru-fru flowers on this plantdog, nosir!
Still waiting for Fern to circle-sniff other dogs (it's a rule for dogs) although I find the bigger dogs try to be careful while the smaller ones freak out-- getting worse with the increasing size disparity.
On a side note; would Fern nibble on grass/flowers or even tree bits? I'm wondering if it's for replacing plant fiber, wood, raw chlorophyll, or some stuff out there is just plain tasty. (Would be kinda fun if Fern had a hankerin' for only certain flowers. biting the heads off because they taste like candy)
...and before anyone says cannibal, humans are made of meat and we love eating the stuff so it's not that far fetched at all if a chlorifiend eats a select few plant types. Mmm, bad example tho, humans will eat almost anything not poisonous, and sometimes that too.

Fern is great <3, i would love a houseplant like him.
8727290
Agreed.
Maybe not gobble her up though. Viciously maul within an inch of her life, perhaps.
That, or someone tries to break into Luna's chambers, and Fern mauls them instead.
8727081
You beat me to it!
a good little chapter.
the more i think about it having a fern as a pet may be rather fun.

Thanks and true,, it is Sunny Skies that is used mostly.
"He’s a big fluffy and happy ball of leaves and wood.”
Omfg D'aaaawww!
It's interesting presenting Fern from the two viewpoints - or possibly three. Ponies, as far as I can tell, and with Fluttershy being an exception, don't tend to domesticate or co-habit with predatory carnivores capable of attacking and eating them. They have dogs, but said dogs generally tend to be significantly smaller than ponies and either harmless-sized, extremely domesticated, or used as utility/working animals. Changelings are predators, but they're stealth predators more than overpower-through-muscle predators, and as far as I'm aware don't tend to keep either non-cocooned livestock or pets.
Humans, on the other hand, have made a habit of domesticating and living alongside animals quite capable of doing us severe and potentially lethal injuries, and have bred dogs in particular into oversized hunting machines (alongside every other function). We're no stranger to the concept that a pet or companion animal could potentially be dangerous, and we're quite capable of instantly switching into predator-rage mode ourselves to deal with such threats (among others). Ponies, and even changelings, may not have the psychology that allows for attacking a manticore bare-handed or attempting to genuinely snarl or threaten an apex predator into submission.
Skitter automatically feels apprehensive around Fern because of the possibility he might attack, purely due to his size, speed, and natural weaponry (and predator nature). Page doesn't feel that because the human response is "If he ever tries something, I will beat his wooden ass to sawdust, so it's honestly not registering as an issue."
welp. I've finally caught up from binge reading the first story, all the way to this one within around 24ish hours give or take. with that dark magic book being cursed, I kinda though it would start appearing in the most weird places. like it would be begging to be read. kinda slightly disappointed that nothing else has been done with it other then "meh." was kinda thinking he might have used some of the spells, even just the more basic ones, out of reflexive anger.
at least now the discord thing has been more or less tied up.
also another book series he could try doing would be the lord of the rings books.
Why do I get the feeling this won’t end well?
I am now... sorta worried about fern. is he going to bite someone, I wonder.
> That’s two out of three that got in trouble because they got involved with the wrong pony or tricked
Seems to me like one out of three? Sunset and Twilight haven't been trouble after they got together.
> timerwolf
Is that a relative of the Phantom Tollbooth's Watchdog?
9255449
He is counting himself.
This chapter is a one, gigantic red flag for Fern, i really hope that will not be the case.
10083194
old yeller behind the woodshed in 3....2....
I have a feeling that Fern will either prove Page right and be quite protective, or Skitter right and he seriously injures somepony
10313949
possibly. i feel like the everfree itself is why the timberwolves are the way they are. tainted somehow
8727081
Checkhov: “Gun...? Gun...? Hmm... I’ve got so many, it’s hard to keep track of them all... But I’m pretty sure that is my dagger sitting above the mantle over there. Oh, and yes, I’ve been keeping an eye on my little dogwood. Sweet little fellow, he is! Not many like him in my collection. ”
I just noticed that Page has a probably immortal pet.
10490543
Sequoia national Park sized house plant in a century or so?
10490543
He's also a good boy or girl or it or spirit or plant or child.
Fern, best Timberwolf friend a Alicorn can ask for ♡
"He was a good boy, until he wasn't."
11023749
"Then he was naughty."
11318646
Fern stared at the bodies of the intruders, hot lifeblood leaking through the fatal wounds, a job for the cleanup crew he supposed, for now what.mattered was that his duty was done, Fern was still a good boy
10313949
Honestly? I think it’s some kind of mix of both…
He has been tamed, not domesticated. People have lost their lives because they could not make that distinction.
Ferns gonna hurt someone isn't he
But ask Luna first for permission ✌
We should teach Fern to catch assassins and apparate them ♡
I know a lityle about having wild animals as pets and while it is possible for each pet bear that gets along nicely with their humans there is one that killed the whole family.
