character studies means to delve into the mind of the character, to try to empathize with how they must feel in their position/situation. Some of those thoughts, feelings, motivations that your character has in these one-shots can be transitioned, or used in later stories. You're essentially delving into the psyche of that character and finding out what makes them tick.
