I have to wonder why the lack of anesthetics. Surely a well-stocked hospital has some horse tranquiliser at hoof, right?

Based on a theory unaccepted nowadays , babies cannot get trauma because they forget everything happening before two years of age and since anesthetics could kill a baby easily without extreme carefulness in dosage, it was taken up and used. It was disproven only in 1979.

I can relate to this story.
When i was a baby, i had tp get held down in a hospital and get stabbed by a needle.
Now, i have a fear of them.
Flurry in that sense relates to me alot.
