Briarpelt

Sing a song, / A song of life / Lived without regret...

E

The time: 7 years before Luna's return.
The place: Celestia's room.
For 993 years, Celestia has spent Hearth's Warming Eve alone. While every other pony in Equestria celebrates, their hearts light as the feathery snowflakes drifting from the sky, she sits on her own, thinking and reflecting. The other ponies have their families, their festivities. She isn't going to keep them from that. But Celestia has no family within reach. She has no distractions, no festivities, nothing to do to keep her from herself. She spends this night instead remembering what once was, and what could have been. It is painful, but it's all she has left.

But elsewhere in the castle, one little filly sits apart from the others at a party. She is different from them, and achieves their state of lightheartedness with much more difficulty. So she goes, as countless other ponies have, to Celestia for comfort.

It's an alright story, a little bit on the 'OC pony shows up and fixes everything' side but not too bad; the formatting is messed up though that needs to be fixed, also this typo.

she'd just stand slightly behind me,
just stand (remove a space)

5651546 Thanks for telling me. I fixed the thing about the extra space, but I'm not sure what's wrong with the formatting. Again, I'm not pretending to be a great author, so if you could elaborate, that would be really helpful. Thanks again!

I know that the plot is a little cheesy. This is my first story though, and a bit of a test run. I'll try to avoid that sort of thing in the future.

I realized a little late that formatting displays differently on different computers and web browsers, so it might just be on my computer, but the story is missing it’s spacing. Although it displays correctly on the download.

It looks like this online:

Almost everything that Celestia knew she'd had to learn through her past mistakes.
As she felt the familiar guilt and shame settle upon her shoulders, dragging her back into the wells of pain and sorrow that she'd been living in for the past few hours, there was a tiny tap at her side.
"Princess Celestia? Are you all right?" It was Abalone, looking up at her face with the innocent worry of a young filly. Celestia felt a corner of her heart melt, seeing that tiny anxious face looking up at her. She smiled gently, allowing some of her worry to ease away.
"I'm fine, Abalone. Sometimes I just get caught up in the weight of the world."
"Well, you don't have to carry it all by yourself, silly!"
Only a foal would dare call me "silly," Celestia thought wryly. "You'd be surprised how many ponies don't want any part in it. Not all grown-ups are actually as responsible as they claim to be."
"Well, then I'll help! Nopony said that only grown-up ponies could do anything!" Abalone retorted, almost huffily.
"You're quite right, little one. But for now, I think you've got enough weight on your shoulders. Not many ponies would come rushing to me like that if they didn't have something serious on their minds." Silence reigned for another few minutes. Celestia didn't believe she'd ever seen a filly stay quiet for so long, except maybe Twilight Sparkle. Her faithful student could stay buried in a single book for hours on end without saying a word, and had been known to disappear into her room for days working on some report or other.
"Princess?" Abalone sounded drowsy now, snuggling into Celestia's side a little more.
"Hmm?"
"Can I ask you something?" Celestia chuckled slightly.
"You just did, but you can ask something else, yes."
