I'm not sure what mate is doing at the end of that sentence. Maybe I'm just misreading it, but you're either missing a word that you meant to write or you meant to put it somewhere else.
I feel that you could use a different word in place of remarked.
I know it seems like a lot but these stuck out to me the most when I read it.

Just something I learned in my college writing class that when I learned it applied to this story very well. When using foreign language or phrases it needs to be underlined.
