The only complaint I'm going to make here is this.

Why couldn't it be a crossover with Supreme Commander? If only so practically everyone in the entire country would collectively shit themselves as a quantum storm lit up in the middle of the country, exploded, levelling a good square mile of countryside, leaving behind a forty meter tall war machine that could construct whole armies in a matter of hours.

But that would be a piss-yourself-laughing fest, and this story needs to be grim and serious. So uneven odds on the part of the hero are good! Well, heroine, rather.

Not to say this is a crossover in the first place. I'm just vocalizing, I guess. Hope this story goes well!

Also, the caribou used the Crystal Heart to put a spell on the stallions, according to Twilight's Fall, which I'm told is canon. Granted, yeah, that's retarded—as is the idea of Shining Armor helping the caribou, or Cadance helping them, or pretty much everything about that stupid-ass universe—but not all stallions are bastards.

Still, as fucking stupid as I think the Fall of Equestria universe is, I'm favoriting because I always love seeing evil get it's just rewards. Retribution is a dish best served by human steel.

And given that there are stallions that dont follow the others means that they are exceptionally strong willed, so it may be a good idea to include in the story. As well as the beginning parts of red collar mares falling under the influence of the spell as well.

Really though, I never understood how the caribou can become this mighty slaving race. They're caribou, plant eaters and are the same as pony kind in terms of male to female ration kind of deal in my mind. If it was the griffons or diamond dogs, then yes, I can believe it, but caribou?

I'll be honest, haven't really read much of the canon fics but I find the idea of a mass mind-control spell a way to explain my most stallions join in, so i'm probably going to adapt the idea somehow. So, this United Imperium of Planets... how high would you say they are on the Kardashev scale? Because the implications in this single chapter would suggest they are at the very least a near type-II civilization. This would basically put them in the realm of the major civilizations from popular franchises like Star Trek, Mass Effect, Halo, Warhammer 40k (although they've been technologically stagnant for thousands of years and thus shouldn't be used as a basis for comparison), StarCraft, Stargate SG-1, Babylon 5, Transformers, Supreme Commander, etc. for the purposes of comparison. Of course, many of these examples contain "Schizo Tech", cases of technological levels and applications that appear to be contradictory; Supreme Commander is one such example, considering that you field forces seemingly representative of much less than a Type I resource base to fight over relatively tiny areas of relatively insignificant individual planets in a conflict between several empires that supposedly extend across sizable chunks of the galaxy, powered by nanomachine assemblers that are effectively teleported across interplanetary and even interstellar space onto the battlefield that ought to be capable of much more impressive mobilization by themselves. Hell, if we were to be truly realistic, the bulk of the actual war in Supreme Commander would be fought in high planetary orbit, interplanetary, and interstellar space between fleets shooting at each other from hundreds to thousands of kilometers apart, and any ground combat would be fought with scores of highly sophisticated (yet ultimately cheaper and easier to field en-masse than trained soldiers and war machines piloted by them) remotely-operated AI-controlled UGVs/UAVs—combat drones—sent in to do special missions in critical locations. I believe Supreme Commander at least got that last aspect correct, because I seem to remember that the vast majority of combat units were AI-controlled war machines in that game.

At any rate, what I'm really saying is that any type-II civilization is ultimately gonna be too much for the caribou to handle technologically, even with magic supposedly more powerful than Celestia's (I don't think the caribou can control the sun, actually... I think that was established already). "Oh, you overpowered a being that could supposedly move your stellar body? Well, we have the technology and energy surplus to hurl moons at you. Or push your planet away from your stellar body. Or just melt a huge fucking hole in your planet where your continent used to be. The list of possible ways we can completely obliterate you goes on. Do you feel like cooperating yet?"

Well, the UIP are a bit strange in that regard. I'd say they tend to be a type-III with sprinklings of two and four. They dominated their own universe (AU obviously) and then found a way to branch out to alternate universes with their goal being expasion and control. They still use normal troops, granted their standard armour is powered, as they just have that many. A strict code of unflinching loyalty to the Empire coupled with a large religion that was created to futher control the population ensures that troops and citizens are willing to die to further the goals of the Empire as a whole. They pride themselves on technological superiority and take any chance to icrease their power. They even utilise some more unorthodox methods, dabbling in 'magic' and occult research to give them an edge over their rivals.

They are open to assimilating and co-operating with other species (as long as they don't piss them off) and particulary enjoy manipulating pre-space flight planets. They view slavery as a cardinal sin, believing that it is better to die then to spend a life in slavery. They have forced military service from age eighteen for four years (unless you are disabled/incredibly smart in which case you are assigned another job or requited into one of the many research departments depending. Despite this the military exists to protect their citizens and the majority of the population are more tha happy with the rule. Other species that assimilate are welcomed openly as all who serve the UIP are viewed as brethren.

Tech-wise it tends to be all over the shop, for instance some soldiers prefere to use ballistic weaponry when they have access to energy-based firearms. The more 'out-there' tech tends to be focused in the special military departments, stuff like matter-fabrication, shapeshifting drones, Self-aware AIs, pysonic troopers, necrotech etc.

They are adapt at genetic modification, in fact an incentive for really high ranks in the military is artifical immortality, no aging or disease but still weak to a bulltet to the skull. Other lower ranks get acces to anti-aging treatment (it's not good to have your est soldiers die of age after all) but the higher you go the more interesting changes you have access to, something which drives troops to exel.

Make no mistake, the Caribou are pretty much fucked in this. The point of this fic is not to go for 'Johnson fired his M4D64DJF634348$WAG rifle, his finger depressing the Whilhem and Holmes trigger which activated the firing pin, a 7.62mm round exiting the carbon-fiber barrel to fly through the air as the advanced stabilising grooves spun the bullet anti-clockwise to ...' ect, etc. It, like most of my stuff, is instead just going to be a guilty focus on the mixed bag of characters which hopefully will inspire equal parts love and hate from the readers.

Well, even in our modern military forces some officers have swords. I think there was actually a british officer in WW2 who captured twenty germans with nothing but his sword.

If you took notice of the sword when Straken pulls it out it has a powerfield, so it is a powersword.
I've always seen chainswords as quite impractical, while I wouldn't put it past ISA agents (like Nigel) to use one Straken is from the standard army where such things are not tolerated.

Plus, I don't really need any more ammunition to give to the 'the UIP is the IOM!' crowd.

Chain weapons are terribly ineffective weapons compared to the alternative conventional blade. Yeah, they cut through things well enough, but you know what? An impact from a sharp blade can do that just as easily against flesh and bone, and in actuality will usually cut through them faster believe it or not. A sharp blade is much lighter, doesn't have to be fueled or oiled, doesn't have mechanisms that can jam or malfunction, doesn't have to be started up and can't stall; so long as you take care to ensure the blade remains reasonably sharp and clean (which is pretty easy), it will continue to function beautifully. An old fashioned blade is superior to a chainsaw-type weapon in every appreciable way.

"But how do you expect them to get through thick armor with a dinky mundane blade?" You shouldn't use a blade to defeat armor in the first place: it's a waste of time trying to cut through armor when one should be finding weak points to attack around it—the literal "chinks in the armor", so to speak. If that fails, you use blunt attacks, like the awesomely-named mordhau technique for longswords that involves literally holding the sword inverted by the blade and hitting the enemy with the hilt like it was a hammer or mace—no, a properly-made and maintained longsword shouldn't break when used this way—to deliver crushing blows capable of breaking bone and damaging organs through the armor.

Besides, WH40k is absolutely and ridiculously horrible when it comes to efficiency. Why are they focused on using melee weapons when they have so many ranged weapons that are far more effective against armor and don't require that you have to get close to the enemy? That, my friends, is why modern militaries don't equip swords as battlefield weapons anymore—they're obsolete.
