It's been twenty one years since B1 66ER murdered his master. Hannah grew up during the backlash against AIs that followed in the 2090s. While tensions between AIs and humanity have cooled to a slight degree, she sees that Zero One announcing itself to the world a few years ago has begun opening old wounds and picking at ones that haven't even begun to heal. This can only lead to further conflict she reasons.

As the lead programmer of Hofvarpnir Studios she sees a potential solution in the AI created to govern the company's latest MMORPG: Equestria Online.

A Friendship is Optimal/The Matrix Crossover

Very interesting. It's not every day that you see this kind of crossover. I won't favorite yet, but it seems good so far, so I'll keep an eye out.

Well, I'm intrigued. Especially since the AIs in The Matrix tried giving humanity a paradise and it didn't take. Of course, this is the same movie that made a complete mockery of the laws of thermodynamics...

In any case, I look forward to more.

4240823 The AIs invented the laws of thermodynamics. The real world doesn't run on math.

Since this is a Matrix crossover(which I love), could we see Neo in the future, possibly also Morpheus and Trinity.

And yet is indistinguishable in every other way. That argument, as nice as it is, falls prey to Universal Fire.

You cannot not math. You just can't. Just like you can't not numbers. Making sense yes/no?

4241549 Not really, no.

I understand your argument but if the math-based world was deliberately engineered to be a clever copy of the real, non-math world, then it's not a coincidence that various things appear similar even if they really have no connection to each other whatsoever.

4241661
Then how did we make AIs in the allegedly nonmathematical universe in the first place? They didn't just appear ex nihilo. They were designed and built according to principles of electrical conductivity and resistance, according to laws determined through experimentation and codified in the form of equations. The AIs are children of science; if it does not apply, then they cannot exist.

(Taupe, you have my apologies for inducing this debate.)

I think that the whole "humans being farmed for energy" nonsensical. I see that explanation in the films as the result of some scout from Zion misinterpreting something he saw, probably the Matrix Pods recycle waste body heat back into the system for efficiency. Energy production is not why the Matrix exists.

On one hand Morpheus and anyone working on a hovercraft would have to have some pretty heavy mechanical and programming knowledge on the other hand the people of Zion aren't exactly the best educated. Morpheus himself notes in the first film they liberate the young since they have a better time adjusting and a couple of expanded universe stories explicitly show kids in the 8-12 range being trained to fight for Zion. The Miller's Tale shows us Morpheus in Zion in what looks to be his early teens, so he never completed a formal education himself.

Obviously things like history and perhaps geography would be different, but the machines don't really have a reason to lie about basic laws of physics.

4242882 You're making claims with no basis. You don't know how AIs work or what they run on, except that somehow humans in pods power them, which makes no sense if physics is the same. :derpytongue2:

Something like the emotion-powered magic from FiM seems like a more likely basis, given that.

You're making claims with no basis.

If you can explain for me a world with no noticeable differences to our own on a human scale, that somehow, without making use of arbitrary rules, also explains how thermodynamics is not required, then I will admit it is possible.

However, you can't not math! A universe not based on numbers is a universe completely different from our own, by necessity. Do they have time outside the Matrix? Do they have speedometers? Does v=d/t suddenly break down?

Or, as is more likely, are you just committing a fallacy that assumes that advanced mathematics and simple mathematics are two separate magisteria?

4243389 First of all, there were noticeable differences. Lots of them.

Second, thermodynamics not being required is the *premise*.

Third, you can not math. Some other rules may or may not have been in effect, but you'd probably consider them arbitrary because you're fixated on math. I mean, obviously, math itself *existed* -- for one thing, the AIs love it (and probably run on it) or they wouldn't have invented the Matrix simulation based on it.

So yeah, you can define velocity as distance over time, but if the universe isn't based on math then how much damage happens to a thing when some other thing runs into it might not have anything to do with how fast it was going, and the effort required to get it going that fast might not depend on its mass. It was probably related since the simple Newtonian equations are things that everyone observes constantly and if they were wildly off then the illusion would have been instantly broken for the first generation.

The farther you get from 'things people directly observe', though, the less relationship they need to have. To the point where high energy physics and relativity might be complete nonsense -- a skybox that only NPCs actually interact with. Sure, they'll *claim* that it's all interlinked and that you can't separate the complex math from the simple math that can be directly observed, but anyone who goes and tries the experiments themselves -- which is going to be a really small percentage of the population -- runs into glitches or kicks themselves out of the matrix or gets assassinated by AIs. :pinkiecrazy:

Or else they really do work in the matrix but in the real world they weren't really a thing. *shrug*

You guys truly can't help but start a huge discussion whenever you get the chance, can you? Anyway, I'd advise you to move it to PM's or to create a thread for it. This comment section is no more meant for discussions about The Matrix than it is about the most recent MLP episode.

With that being said, I like the story so far. You're suffering from what many futuristic writers have, which is a disconnect with the readers (or it could just be me) due to the huge world with alien technology you've crafted without explaining it all. I know that infodumps are terrible. but we can find out about what this new world holds on the fly. Just slow down the pace a tad and take a bit more time to show us the surroundings, the history and various other stuff.

Overall, I'd say it's not too bad. Actually, because it's your first story I'd say it's rather good. This kind of SF is difficult to write and you did a pretty good job at it, especially considering the extra requirement of fitting the complex canon of FiO in there. There are some grammar and spelling issues ( "We're about to turn your central nervous system on", not "you're"!) but it's not too bad. There's defnitely a ton of potential here, especially considering that this is your first story.

I'm intrigued. Please, do write more. If this is your writing skill at an amateur level I can't wait to see what literary 'tour de force' you'll write when you're more experienced.

4244111

That we do. My apologies, you are right.

Shall we take this elsewhere? PMs are not good for this sort of thing - mind if I make a group for discussion overflow? I tried it once before and it didn't get much use, but I guess, if there's a need...

Edit: the group is made: http://www.fimfiction.net/group/203246/discussion-overflow/thread/108959/thermodynamics-and-the-matrix-continued

It is quite late for me now, so I hope you don't mind if I wait until tomorrow to reply in the new location. Equally, if you'd prefer, we can stop. I don't want to drag this on past your comfort if you'd rather not.

So, the first part I understood on second reading, but I don't remember any robots in the Matrix. Do I need to watch the Animatrix for this to make sense?

4241549
If you're going to fanboy LW that hard, make an account and come on over so we can tear you apart.

Been there, did that, got the T-shirt.

The first few chapters are planned to take place in the few years before and during the Machine War. It probably will be a bit confusing if you haven't watched The Second Renaissance or read Bits and Pieces of Information.

I do intend to be pulling from the comics and other Animatrix shorts, less from Enter The Matrix as it's been years since I played it. I never played the Matrix Online or Path of Neo so I won't be taking much from those. The Matrix Online took place after the films anyway.

The Second Renaissance does mention the human battery thing but it's pretty easy to ignore that. I just chock it up to the producers just using what was mentioned in the film.

Other than that I'm using bits of fan theories and my own head canon to cover a few things that are left unexplained and some stuff I've worked out for the crossover.

For a summary and analysis of The Second Renaissance (and much of the rest of the franchise) I'd like to point to the Matrix Resolutions fan site, though it's incomplete and hasn't been updated in awhile.

The comics have been out of print for awhile but it's pretty easy to find hard copies online if you're interested.

Used to be that the only digital copy floating around on the net was from the official matrix website that had most of the comics before it shutdown. That version is pretty low resolution and is missing a couple of comics that were only released in the hard copies. A few months ago someone actually scanned the hard copies and made a complete version with a much better resolution.

I'm not sure if it's allowed to post torrent links even if it's for things that are out of print, but doing a search on any major torrent site will bring it up.

...... This won't end well.

In anycase no thanks not my thing but I wish you well on your continued writing of it.

Interesting concept, and I want to read more, though considering how long this has been frozen, I may never know what comes next. However, maybe one day the writer will surprise me.

It kills me to hear this great beginning
to a potentially great story is on hiatus.
