A little late to this one.

Yeah, the episode wasn’t great.

I'll admit while the episode did have a predictable story focusing on the argument element similar to that one episode where Twilight's friends tried to make her new castle feel like home... I 'still' enjoyed the episode. In a way with the Young Six, we got to learn a bit about them through their deepest fears in the dream sequence as well as their ideas they put together to remember the tree in some way (I swear Gallus had taken lessons from Flim and Flam at some point). Now I admit there were some low points that made the episode less enjoyable than it should, like how Sandbar was not at his best. HOWEVER... What pleased me is how they didn't just have Yona serve as the subject for comic abuse. Of all the students, I was surprised she'd be the voice of reason in how they should remember the tree.

And when we think about it, this episode in general is a metaphor to how Gen 4 is ending before Gen 5 comes along. We can do all we can to remember Gen 4 as it was, but it's important to remember what it has always stand for compared with all the other generations came before. Granted, we don't know how Gen 5 will turn out whether it's going to be good or not. But I'd like to think if we are willing to give this is a shot, much like when the tree regrew into something new and beautiful, who knows? Perhaps the same thing will happen in the next show.

Was this probably the best follow-up to an otherwise impressive season premier? Not entirely... But I still liked it. Plus I'm a 'sucker' for musical numbers so I'm glad there was at least 'one' song in this episode.

This was a really good episode.

All in all, a decent episode. Good to see that the spirit of the Tree Of Harmony still lives on!

That being said, I can't help but wonder which elements the students will embody when they're finally chosen...

....wow, when did Yona become the wise one?

Maybe, but it has good things.:ajsmug:

Good episode. It demonstrates that a little subtext goes a long way.

5046821
I never said the episode was bad either, my current stance is ‘meh’.

5046817
The light leading to the student six is the same color as the mane six hide.

Gallus = loyalty, Yona = honesty,
Silverstream = laughter, Sandbar = magic,
Smolder = generosity, Ocellus = kindness

...

Y'know, when I asked how they were gonna deal with the absence of the Tree of Harmony in the premier, I didn't expect them to solve it in literally the next episode. Guess they have more stuff to focus on. :applejackunsure:

This was a nice one. Student Six episodes always bring a smile to my face, and seeing Yona of all characters being the voice of reason was shocking yet profound. Not much else to say, honestly.

5046830
I had been speculating who would represent which element, too, never thought to look at the hide colors. Those actually make quite a lot of sense, including Gallus and Smolder with the subversion.

Only thing I don't get (and the only thing that threw me off while speculating) was how TF Sandbar is going to represent magic. I don't see him being the spark.

I feel like this episode symbolizes the MLP fandom in some way. We grow, we blossom, we prosper, we wither away... and then a new seed is planted to continue the cycle.

Anyway, I'd be really surprised if the young six are the new protagonists in G5... unless Hasbro decides to make a reboot.

I hope G5 doesn't flop.

5046832
I think the element of magic could also be friendship, leadership, or guidance. Sandbar have been helping the nonponies learn about friendship.

5046827
I know what you mean. The only problem (not meant to sound insulting) is that your previous comment, with you saying nothing else about the episode, can make some people believe you didn't like it.

This was a fun episode. The Young Six returned, and we got to learn a lot more about them (like Silverstream being a budding artist who dreams of being a Wonderbolt, and Ocellus being into meditation).

It was a heartbreaking moment when they came across the ruins of the Tree of Harmony. They were the first ones the tree actually reached out to, and revealed that it was truly alive. It was nice to see they all had their own ideas of honoring the tree, but they forgot to work together, until Yona was the one to put them back on track, leading to a great song where we're reminded just how good a bunch of friends they are.

I had a feeling the tree wasn't gone for good, but I didn't expect it to return so soon. The new look is really impressive, and all that talk about the tree changing to become what Equestria needs was intriguing. Hopefully, we'll get to see the interior soon enough.

5046840
During "School Raze", when the Young Six were glowing from the power of the tree, Sandbar was yellow, like Fluttershy, while Gallus glowed purple, like Twilight. It actually makes sense for Gallus to represent friendship. Like Twilight in the early seasons, he didn't care much for friendship at first, but came to value it greatly, despite still having an aloof attitude at times.

Unpopular opinion: I'm just happy that the Tree is still alive. I don't care if the emotional impact from its destruction was somewhat negated.

I don't know what it is about that tree that I'm so attached to, even more so than the Golden Oak. I didn't even know it was sentient until last season. You know what, I don't care if I'm the only one who is happy about the Tree being alive. I like this episode.

5046840
That was how I saw it, too, with the Magic element actually literally meaning the Friendship element, but even so, he seems to be a little too... out of it, I guess. I don't really see him being a great leader even though I'm pretty sure that's what the writers want us to believe. Honestly, among the six of them, I think either Yona or Ocellus (despite her shy nature, which complements Fluttershy perfectly) would be better leaders. But that's just me. And given how all the other characters lined up so well with the elements that the tree hinted at for us, it really would only make sense for Sandbar to be the 'leader' of the group. I just would have preferred it if the leader had been a non-pony. Not really sure why, it's just kinda how I think of it.

Silverstream: "STAIRS!"
Smolder: "Meh. I bet the crystals don't taste that great."

5046832

Actually in School Raze Part 2 their magic auras matched the Elements of Harmony themselves. It was-

Yona- Honesty
Silverstream - Laughter
Sandbar - Kindness
Smolder - Loyalty
Ocellus - Generosity
Gallus - Magic

Making Gallus Magic sounds counter-intuitive, but he's probably the most similar to Season 1 Twilight Sparkle.

Anyway, I thought the episode was cute. Wasn't something I was super happy to see, but it was nice. I did like that they acknowledged the Tree of Harmony as a sentient being, at the very least.

5047024
Huh. Didn't remember that. But I think 5046830 is right. Those would make a lot of sense, not only because of their personalities but also because of the colors the Tree sent them.

5047032

My list IS the colors the tree sent them in School Raze. I don't know where he got his list. I got mine from the episode just now.

Wait...

derpicdn.net/img/view/2019/3/23/1992726.png

They switched them in the last episode. I didn't even notice that. The original ones work way better, quite frankly. The revised ones just seem completely random.

Though a dragon representing Generosity is a hilarious level of irony.

5047044
Yeah, I'm not exactly sure where they got those colors from in School Raze.

But if you think about the matchings in this episode, in terms of Smolder being Generosity and Gallus being Loyalty, I believe it's all a matter of subversion. Dragons are supposedly naturally greedy, whereas here Smolder is (and will be even more so) learning about the value of giving and not being selfish. By the same token, griffons (as was originally shown in the episode where Pinkie and Rainbow go to Griffonstone— can't remember the name at the moment) supposedly don't care for each other at all and don't give a crap what happens to anyone. Gallus is learning through his friendships with the other five that he needs to stick with them— another subversion. The other four all naturally match with the other four Elements. Except for Sandbar, personally— like I mentioned earlier, though that Element not only represents Magic, but can also represent friendship, leadership, etc (like 5046840 said), I think he's pushing it a little. Not only is he not a unicorn, but he doesn't really make a great leader, and hasn't done a lot—though he's had his moments—to pull their friendship together. Yona's done most of that.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

5047059

The colors from School Raze are likely taken from their personality-profiles.

Smolder being Loyalty makes about as much sense as her being Generosity, I suppose (both are inherently opposite to what dragons typically are, even her Christmas story was distinctly anti-loyalty), but her personality-profile is most similar to Rainbow Dash out of the Mane 6. That of very boisterous put-on-a-front attitude. Though you can spin her to be either one, given how little we've really seen her do anything, I think Loyalty works fine, even if what you want is a "subversion" for some reason.

can't remember the name at the moment) supposedly don't care for each other at all and don't give a crap what happens to anyone. Gallus is learning through his friendships with the other five that he needs to stick with them— another subversion.

That's not a "subversion", that is literally what Twilight Sparkle did in the first two-parter and throughout Season 1. Starting from not giving a crap about anyone around them and being forced to learn that friendship has its own value. He's following pretty directly in her hoofsteps, hence why him being the Element of Magic actually makes the most sense. He's the least likely to already know friendship due to his upbringing, he has the most to learn, and he's the only one who has individually messed up and had to learn a friendship lesson of his own (in last year's Christmas episode).

I feel like people have forgotten that Twilight became the Element of Magic long before she was actually GOOD at being a friend. She had the potential to be a great friend and a willingness to learn, but... well... she sucked at it, in Season 1. That was the point of the show. Her learning to be a good friend and making her life, and the world in general, a better place. That's the magic of friendship, that anyone can be open to it if they want to be, regardless of who they were before.

The Element of Magic isn't the leader, the most powerful, or the one who controls all of the others or whatever. The Element of Magic is the one whose life is made better by friendship, and who learns the most from it.

I think we're agreed generally that Sandbar doesn't work as the element of Magic whatsoever.

5047074
All very good points that really don't deserve to be disagreed with. I still stand stand by mine, but I really can't (and won't) deny yours.

And yeah, Sandbar can shove it. Even his name is appropriate to the fact that he generally acts like a California surfer dude. :rainbowlaugh:

5047044
5047059
I put forward the theory that in one or both of those episodes, the artists were just choosing the colors that best complemented the colors of the students, with no regard to making each student represent a specific element.

Especially because in this episode, the writers went out of their way to demonstrate that Yona (notice how abnormally long her section of the permission montage is compared to the others'), the prideful, smashy yak, was characterizing kindness. Besides, "yaks best at everything" isn't really becoming of the element of honesty.

(I also looked at what the elements represented when they were originally planted by Star Swirl et al., but I couldn't get those six virtues to apply to the students, either.)

Yeah, this episode was fucking shite!!

Sounds like it was dark af. Finally another good episode after so long

5047131
Grogar has noticed your comment. He's sending monsters upon you.:derpytongue2:

This was a very bare bones episode. Not much to say.

5046817
The instant I saw it, I went ":pinkiegasp: It's a Crystal Gazebo!"

I didn't expect them to bring the Tree of Harmony back so soon, but I think it was a good episode. I enjoyed seeing how each of the Student Six wanted to honor the tree, and I look forward to seeing what the inside of the new form of the tree looks like in later episodes. And I really liked the song in this episode.

Well, for world lore the only thing of relevance is the ending. Tree’s is back in a new form and it took a clue from the seed it grew Twilight’s castle from and became a tree/building and… well that’s it. The episode ended before bothering to show us what was inside the new tree so we don’t really know anything about this new incarnation of the tree of harmony.

As for the episode, well it’s boring slice of life. Nothing against slice of life, it can be fine if it’s not repetitive, but this is yet another instance of the too many chefs ruin the cake story, so been there, done that. And this didn’t strike me as better than the past versions of that story. So that’s all I got, until next time have fun out there.

I'd say, this episode was fun to watch and sort of relaxing after the rushed events of the première. I found the efforts of the young six to honor the tree heartwarming, and their dismay discovering that it had been destroyed was well-written.
On the other hand, I found a little bit off the reconstruction song ^^" (just leave the singing to your elders, guys, ehhe) and the fact that they literally glued the fragments of the tree together -elements of harmony included- and boom, the tree lives again.
Seriously, Harmony? You gave your 'formers' bearers heart attacks when you just needed some holding hands, weak singing and glue?
I say it without malice, it's just funny to think of it.
Also that Twilight waited four years, had to have her home destroyed and faced countless challenges to gain a crystal castle, meanwhile the students endured but a year of lessons about 'being nice' to gain pretty much the same plus the trust of the conscience of Harmony itself.
Isn't it a little unfair?
By the way, it was a good episode, I always enjoy watching the young six.

Well i was right, its too bad they made it annoying by making twilight not remember that the elements cant be completely destroyed from the events of the pilot episode...
Someone needs to teach the tree of harmony how to make better buildings... just keep imagining birds flying overhead bursting into flame due to the crystal's magnifying glass effect.
Otherwise a meh episode.

I am super late to this, but I get all the symbolism in this episode and the premiere. I need to make notes - I have a big video project/idea to wrap up the whole 9-year saga of this show and its fandom. But I need to plan it out. Thank you, Student Six for providing me with motivation to start working on it.
