Reader Survey: Which Star Trek series is your favorite? · 8:51am Sep 8th, 2016

Pretty straightforward: of the five Star Trek series, which one is your favorite? (If your answer is "I don't like/watch Star Trek", there's no need to share that information. :twilightsheepish:)

(Also, let's not turn this into a Voyager-bashing thing, please. Because somehow, we always end up there...)

For me, the short answer is TNG, with a caveat:

I have acknowledged, to myself, that while TNG is the series that established the richest, most elaborate canon of Star Trek--the canon most fans adhere to--THE strongest, most consistent series (and absolutely my second personal favorite) is Deep Space Nine.

I've seen every episode of TNG at least 20 times. I can't say the same for DS9, because it always gets the short end of the stick on TV and I've only watched it through once from beginning to end on Netflix--which ultimately was the only way I was ever able to watch the entire series in order from beginning to end.

I think the best thing about DS9 is that most of the time, it doesn't TRY to be TOS/TNG. Sure, it does Stock Star Trek Scripts from time to time--especially around the fourth and fifth seasons--but for the most part, it moves at its own pace and has its own rhythm that distinguishes it from other Star Trek series.

The Next Generation.

It's actually the only one I've really managed to get a chance to watch so far, unless you count the movies. :twilightsheepish:

For me, it's TNG followed by TOS. TNG for Data, TOS for Spock. Though, oddly, I prefer the movies for TOS, and the episodes for TNG.

My favorite Star Trek of all time (episode or movie) though has to be the episode where Q was punished for his behavior by the continuum, turning him mortal...leaving him in the care of the Enterprise crew. Just seeing Data teaching Q how to be human was...fascinating.

And of course, two of the best scenes of the episode:

(starting at 1:42 for me on the second one.)

DS9 since it really is one big epic overarcing story.

It's shows the Federation is not quite a utopia but it's trying it's damnedest to be one and why it's worth even fighting for.

I'll say it, my favorite is Voyager.
The idea of a federation ship traveling without federation contact is the hook.

Only ever watched the new movies... Sorry.

In order:
1. TNG
2. Voyager
3. Enterprise
4. TOS
5. DS9

4198496 I'm one of those rare ducks who likes Voyager, and the premise is solid. But there were a lot of problems with the execution. I'm not going to sit here and bash Voyager--again, I liked it well enough to make the effort to watch every episode--but Voyager had a lot of flaws, problems, and quirks that plagued the entire production run. Don't get me wrong, Voyager did a lot of GOOD things as well, and it introduced some legitimately terrifying concepts to the Star Trek universe (especially the phage *shudder*). But then you had Chakotay, who is from every single Native American tribe; Janeway, whose hostile command style is one of the chief criticisms of the series; Tuvok, who can't seem to speak without prefacing his thoughts with "I am a Vulcan"; the Kazon, who God help them TRIED to be the new Klingons, but they were never really used WELL...

Again, like I said, Voyager isn't terrible by ANY means. But there's only one Trek series that has more...foibles, shall we say.

4198497 That's sad. That makes me sad. :fluttercry:

4198506 Never really liked Star Trek. Maybe I'll look for the old series... Unsure.

4198508 I'd recommend TNG from seasons 3 and onward, personally.

4198512 A'ight. Why not. Strange; You and Zef seems to know how to make me feel guilty.:rainbowlaugh:

TNG. Also, the new movie was something cool in my opinion.

TNG. Mostly because Picard is awesome and Q is absolutely hilarious and as one can imagine for a John De Lancie performance, steals the show whenever he's around.

I was about nine when Voyager premiered and watched it during a relatively impressionable period where as I was easily impressed by huge quantities of technobabble. Enterprise left a terrible taste in my mouth between the inexplicable Vulcan conspiracy to hold back human development and the attempt to recreate 9/11 by firing a laser at Florida. Never really got into DS9, but I've enjoyed most of the reruns of TOS and TNG that I've seen. Well, except the TNG plots that can be summarized by "Let's all be dumbfounded by how stupid and primitive this alien society is."

So yeah, mixed bag.

TNG, that's mostly what I've watched anyway. But Voyager is also very awesome

I watched a bit of TNG, then some DS9 but what really got me into Trek, and the only one I have a box set of, is Voyager.
I agree it had its problems and suffered terribly from a case of "Who wrote the script today?" inconsistency but the concept of two waring factions having to work together without Star Fleet support drew me in (wish they had done a bit more with that first part) and then the characters kept me around. I especially love the EMH's and Seven's story lines and how Harry struggles with his position in the crew. I just wish they had done a bit more Kess and that Nellex hadn't been such a "Scrappy" character but I don't hate him like some other people do. Tom and B'elanna made a good "odd couple" and Tom and Harry made a good two-pair friends.
It would have also been nice if they could have kept Janeway consistent and not had Chakotay been so... stereotypical. I never really connected Tuvok for reasons you have stated but over all I really like the cast of the show.
So, over all it was good but could have been so much better.

Getting into Voyager also made me go back and watch DSN and I really liked it as well. I haven't watched all of it but, agaian, I really like the various characters, especially Odo and Garak. The ferengi were also fun to have around.
I really need to get around to sitting down and watching the whole thing, I don't think I've even seen one entire season but I know I've seen at least half of the show as a whole. It was really shafted on reruns.

On another note watching DSN got me into Babylon 5 but I don't want to derail the blog by going into more detail.

I don't think I'll ever watch TOS, but I do want to watch more TNG. I've seen a good bit of it and it is indeed very good but didn't really catch my attention too much.

I watched some Enterprise but it, too, didn't really pull me in and I'm not sure if I want to take the time to give it another chance.

I haven't seen any of the new movies so I will not comment on them.

Next generation, the original star trek and the cartoon one the others were not as good but, still watchable but, if i have to choose just one I will go with generations and anything part of it past season three.

I have no particular dislike of any Star Trek series. TOS is probably my favorite, because it's what I've seen the most of. TNG and Voyager are second in terms of how much I've seen, though I was never a dedicated viewer of either (I was only nine when Voyager premiered, and I only ever saw reruns of either of these shows as far as I know).

For DS9, I only really saw one episode, and that's because someone showed it to be after telling me it was a sequel to one of my favorite TOS episodes. (The TOS episode was "The Trouble With Tribbles". DS9's episode was "Trials and Tribble-ations".) Enterprise, I never watched. And of the movies, I've seen eleven out of thirteen (including "First Contact" in theaters), missing only the reboot's two sequels. (The first Star Trek film I ever saw was #4, and while I didn't have any real idea of what was going on during that first viewing, it's been one of my favorites ever since.)

Until next time...

The Original Series.

My favorite Star Trek series is actually the new set of movies, since they're the first Star Trek things I actually had interest in. (My parents are the bigger Trek fans. Heck, it's because of Star Trek that my parents met in the first place)
However, I would actually like to watch the other shows at some point. I just have to get around to it.

The Next Generation is definetly my #1. DS9 is my second favorite.

I have only watched the JJ-Verse so I am going to go with that one.

I'm in the process of watching through the entire franchise. so far i've chewed through TOS and TAS, as well as the first 2 movies, andI'll probably watch the search for spock later today. Soooo... the only logical answer is to say that my favorite is TOS.:twilightblush: although i did really enjoy the last 5 or so eps of TAS

TNG All the Way. It's just such a great show, and Q is still my favorite Star Trek Character Ever. As for the rest, it's TOS, Voyager, DS9, and finally at the bottom is Enterprise.

TNG, pretty much for the same reasons as Moth. It and Voyager got the syndication love when I was small, and TNG was a much better show.

DS9

Clearly the budgeting and effects were best in TAS. Yep.

I haven't seen all of the series, but I have seen a bunch of episodes of different series. I thought Enterprise was decent (I actually don't hate A Night in Sickbay half as much as the rest of the internet). Voyager, likewise, I don't hate. That was actually 'my series' growing up, since it aired on UPN all the time. Deep Space Nine I haven't seen a lot of. While what I've seen is good, the knowledge that a lot of it was designed specifically to spite someone lessens its appeal. The original series has good episodes, but I'll have to get around to watching them again. My favorite (and the one I'm currently watching) is The Next Generation.

A toss up between TNG and late DS9, since I really enjoyed the whole Dominion war arc.

While the mmo kind of killed my love of trek I would have to go with tos if only just becuse I remember trying to stay up on friday nights till 1am to see it

I would say it's a tossup between TNG and DS9, with Voyager a close second/third. I liked all three that were set in that area of the timeline, Enterprise not so much, and TOS was alright, but too campy for me.

I've enjoyed watching TOS and TNG. I even watched TOS when G4 did its "stock market" bullshit because that was the only time I could watch it.

However, because I was a kid and I got attached as a kid, Janeway will always be my captain.

I like the oldest ones the best...

1. TOS
2. TNG
3. DS9
4. Voyager
3. Enterprise

I've only seen the newest movie, but I plan on going back to watch these sometime.

The only ones I ever bothered with are NextGen and the original. I couldn't get into DS9 (Loved Babylon 5 personally)

My rankings (and why) are

DS9 - Only one Q episode (which showed how one should deal with a Q), TONS of Mirror Episodes, Hope for Miles O'Brien (who got hit upon by a cardassian chick in one of the most hilarious scenes), A Ferengi joining Starfleet and one of the best episodes (In The Pale Moonlight)
Voyager - Used to be number 1, but got stepped down due to actually WATCHING DS9. Source of one of the best fan-edits ever ("Warship Voyager", which is an edited version of "Living Memory" without all the parts set in the future)
Next Gen - Had a good later seasons, but the damages done by being TOS 2.0 in early seasons kinda messed things up for me.
TOS - I feel bad for putting this one here. I have not really watched it and cannot judge it without watching it at the time it was first aired.
Enterprise - From what I've seen, I don't really like it. The moment that sticks out in my mind is Archer obeying the Prime Directive before it was even written (and him referencing that in futurte, there will be a rule that stops him from dojng what he was about to do). The sad thing is that Enterprise is still canonical to the Kelvin-verse
The Kelvinverse - Indifferent. Would be interesting to see what happens to a Kelvin-versed Next Gen and Deep Space Nine

4200933 Deep Space Nine, there were theories at the time that it was designed to cut the legs out from underneath a rival show, Babylon 5. There was also talk, some of it official, that it was designed from the ground up to do many of the things that Roddenberry's rules for TNG explicitly forbade.

Deep Space Nine is by far and away my favorite Star Trek series. The original series suffers heavily from... what is it called? Zeerust? The datedness of old visions of the future? TNG on the other hand is drenched in the sort of utopian wish-fulfillment which made it hard for me to take in large doses. I could never binge-watch TNG, not that it was made to be watched in that way; few shows outside of the soap opera ghetto were before the mid-Nineties. And I didn't even watch Voyager or Enterprise all that much past their respective pilots.

But Deep Space Nine... it had a sense of tragedy, there was an acknowledgement that not all problems could be solved with good will, honest dealings, and a ready hand with a phaser. It was the pragmatic Star Trek, the rueful one, the Faulknerian Star Trek. And it had Garak, my god it had Garak. And it had the best captain, bar none. And it was serialized, a novelty in those days.

4200933 After Gene Roddenberry passed on, the writers of Deep Space Nine decided to take aim at some of his ideals of the future.

1) TNG remains my favorite Trek ever (I just prefer to ignore all the TNG movies aside from First Contact). Once they figured out their own style by the third season (rather than trying to follow TOS too much), they got really good. Quite idealistic and utopian, and All Good Things remains one of my favorite finales ever.

2) DS9 is also very good, though for different reasons. I slightly regret the series moved away from the Bajor and wormhole stuff by the middle seasons. The Dominion War arc is big and epic and dark, and they did a great job with it, but its a pretty big shift from TNG (and TOS). Still a great story and series.

3) TOS with all its hammy, nostalgic charm. Especially half the TOS movies, which have aged mostly well.

4) ...with some reservations, Voyager, mainly because the Doctor was my favorite character on the show. And on the rare occasion some of the other cast got an episode, they usually did a good job with the material.

5) Enterprise. I like it, and I think that if it had a full seven seasons it would have turned out better than Voyager, with how the fourth season was doing a lot better with its multi-episode arcs, but by then there had been too much TV Trek. I still remember UPN somewhat.

Have to agree with you on TNG, Picard is, in my opinion, better than Kirk, and was the first Star Trek series I´ve ever watched, plus, Q
