TrotCon, Moonlight, and how to write professional speedfics

First off, I wanted to thank everyone who read and commented on Moonlight. It's definitely my favorite story I've written yet, and it was great to see it get such a positive reception. As far as a sequel goes, I have no plans at the moment, but I might revisit it later for a short story or oneshot. The dream setting opens up a lot of possibilities, and that made it a really fun story to

    I will never sleep

Looks like I'm starting another fairly long multi-part story against my better judgement. I know exactly what I'm getting myself into. I will probably regret this in a few months.

Anyway, it's based on an idea I've been working on for a few months. I'll try to post chapters on a fairly regular schedule, unless life gets in the way.

Stay tuned for terrible things happening to Scootaloo.

    Weekly Writer's Workshop

I'll be doing an interview at 3 PM (EST) today on the Weekly Writer's Workshop with Golden Vision. We'll be talking about that one story I wrote that a lot of people read, as well as tips for aspiring writers. It's the perfect thing to listen to if you're trying to write a story, but don't want to actually work on it, so you're

    A Cutie Mark Crusaders Christmas!!

I guess that "A Cutie Mark Crusaders Hearth's Warming Eve" would be more accurate, but it doesn't have the catchy alliteration.

I just finished a new story and submitted it, so it should be up on the site pretty soon!

IT IS DONE. · 3:00am Jul 21st, 2012

Well. Wow. This has been an experience.

Anthropology started back in December, so it's gone on for just under 8 months. I knew when I started it that it would be long, but it still seems like more than I anticipated.

I started writing it pretty much just because I hadn't seen many stories expanding on the "Lyra is obsessed with humans" theme and saw potential there. I've seen comments and posts saying that I'm responsible for her increased popularity. I'm not sure just how much of an impact I've had, but I certainly like to believe I'm part of the reason she's one of the first background ponies to become a toy.

And I think all of my readers deserve thanks, since I definitely did not expect this story to become as popular as it did. All of your comments, reviews, and messages were appreciated (and, yes, I do read just about all of them both here and on Equestria Daily). And I'd also like to thank anyone who recommended the story on message boards or helped with the TV Tropes page. I know I'm popular when I have a TV Tropes page. And, of course, I'm absolutely floored by the fact that people have been making fanart and music for this story. You're amazing.

Will I ever write another 31 chapter story? Well... Maybe not. I do have plans to continue writing (after an indefinite hiatus, which is a fancy way of saying "I'm exhausted and just want to play Skyrim right now") but right now I think I'd prefer to do more short stories like "Caretakers" instead of long, drawn-out novels.

I do have an idea going around that I've discussed with a few people for a multi-chapter story based on Twilight's friends finding out she has an older brother in Canterlot. I haven't really started on it other than outlines. It's tentatively titled "Twilight Has A Brother," and I don't want to spoil too much... but Twilight has a brother.

Also, is anyone going to TrotCon this weekend? Maybe I'll see you there!

Will you be writing any sort of sequel to Anthropology? I know I for one would love to see more about human / pony relations. I can understand if you'd rather do something else though. That would be a completely different story.

It has been an honor to go on this journey with you sir!

It was a pleasure to read through your story.

Great job! This is one of the fanfics that kept me coming back here! its so easy to just get into what you write.

Thanks for being an awesome writer! Hope your next piece has the same kind of popularity, and have a good break :pinkiehappy:

I'm sad it's over D:

Twilight has a brother :pinkiegasp: ! Scandal!

:moustache:

This new idea sounds like it'll be a fun read!

Koolbeans

I posted my full thoughts on the story, but I just wanted to say thanks again. This story will always hold a special place as the story that introduced me to pony fanfiction.

Oh no! Anthropology can't be done, it was one of my favorite fics to get update emails for! :fluttercry:

Oh my goodness, its been such an exciting ride and we're all quite thankful that you've provided it for us.
Thanks so much for all your hard work and creativity JasonTheHuman, I'll miss looking forward to new chapters of this great story, but I'm glad that you could see it through to an exciting and satisfying end.

Wait, Twilight has a brother?!:pinkiegasp:

On the subject of your work writing this story increasing the Lyra fanbase, I can personally attest to its truth, at least in my case. Reading "Anthropology" was what actually got me interested in Lyra in the first place, and I've gone on to read various other Lyra fics that might have even been almost as good. It's sad to see the story go, but it was a great ride, and I'm very glad I got to read it. Thank you.

Twilight? A brother? What blasphemy is this! Next you'll say that he is engaged to Celestia's niece! Psha! :trollestia:

And now one of the hallmarks of my ponyfic reading is over. Seriously, I looked forward to this every week. It was a great ride throughout, and I think you ended it quite well. I've gotta say, one of the things which impressed me most was your consistency of updating. Seriously, that's almost as big of an accomplishment as gaining the popularity you have.

"I certainly like to believe I'm part of the reason she's one of the first background ponies to become a toy."

Oh God. You're the reason it exists.

Anyway, yup! You deserve a break. And I heard Skyrim is very good. I was planning on commenting and saying how it's probably your fault Lyra's so popular with the human thing, but you tackled that already soo... I guess I'm done here.

Twilight has a brother?! *Prepares the shit hit the fan force-field and window wipers*

BUT
BUT
I HAS SAD NOW

Twilight Has A Brother sounds like fun, but I have a small suggestion.

It occurred to me recently while rewatching episode 1 & 2 that Fluttershy has probably known about Shining Armor from the very beginning of the show. After all, Spike recounts his life story (And that's the story of my whole entire life!) when he and Twi first meet Fluttershy, and unless Spike is really self centered he probably mentioned Twilight's older brother.

YES I WILL BE THERE!!! =DDD

It's about time, sir.

A moment of silence to remember the god of all fanfictions.

You know, I really am sorry to see this end. This is the only story that I willed myself to stay awake all night to read. I know I haven't been here since the beginning, but I still enjoyed reading it. Kudos, with luck to your future endeavors.
Btw, have fun on Skyrim.

I must know if you or anyone else writes a sequel to Anthropology!

Well done. Congratulations on an excellent story. I look forward to reading anything you might write in the future

I just want to say that Anthropology was my first MLP fanfiction… and it was just perfect. It was interesting, funny, and very well written and thought out!

You are an amazing writer, and I can't wait to read anything you plan on writing in the future!

coughSEQUELcough

This... I had worries about it, but I'm glad to be wrong. Thank you for the journey.

Ive been here since this first popped up on fimfiction, and its definitively one of my favorites. Its what put Lyra on the spot, both for me and for the fandom.

Eh, there's more then enough first contact material out there (Arrow 18 Mission Logs: Lone Ranger, Article 2, and All-American Girl, among others -- first one is fairly good, second one I don't really like but a lot of other people do, and the third one is a soap opera that I genuinely enjoy but has made a few people vehemently hate it, so . . . yeah, you can take that as a recommendation list for you to add to the no doubt huge pile of ponyfic you have to read while on hiatus) so I say you can leave the story as is. That said, when you do eventually get done reading and get back to writing I can certainly say that I and many others will be reading what you're writing (seriously, Twilight having a brother? What a twist :rainbowderp: ). Who knows, maybe in a few months you'll be interviewed about another one of your stories that has become wildly popular and I can ask you another round of semi-relevant questions after the interview, again, with repeats. :applejackconfused:

Sorry, hope you enjoy yourself at TrotCon. I'll be at Canterlot Gardens later in the year, if you go there I may see you then.

To write a long-ass post or not to write a long-ass post...
I like the former!

Dear Jason,
Though I (and most likely your entire fanbase) understand your need for a break and your desire to try new ideas, it would mean a lot to us, or at least me, if you were to, in some way, shape, or form, continue Anthropology or make a sequel to it.
I understand that this may be difficult and possibly undesirable on your part, so we (or at least I) would understand if you declined this request.
Though I wish I could do it myself to save you the trouble, I couldn't do it any justice, what with my tuhribleness at ideas and you godhood of such. I'd also help you do this if it was convenient or even possible, but sadly I cannot. But it's the thought that counts, eh?
I would hope that you reply to this, so as to understand your decision when and if you make one but, as always, I'd understand if you did otherwise.
With love and respect,
Net_User

That was one epic tale indeed. :ajsmug:

Do you have any idea what, if anything, you'll write next? :rainbowhuh:

It was a wild, amazing trip and I loved each chapter along the way. Bravo, Jason!:yay:

I salute you, sah!

Great read, tick, v good, would fic again.

241440
Seconded. Although I might actually try to write a spinoff and fail horribly.

BR

Now that's its finished, I can start reading it!:pinkiegasp:

Congratulations!

Jason... Thank you

You sir, have created something truly brilliant here and it has earned a special place in my heart (I think I'll slide it in with Fallout Equestria and The Ballad of Echo the Diamond Dog)

In truth, if it wasn't for this story I may never have gotten into the fandom, I just stumbled across your story while searching google and... well, here I am almost a year later, avidly reading these fan fictions and loving every second of it (well... mostly every second of it, Cupcakes probably should have been avoided but hey, what are you going to do?). In fact I feel that I owe you a great deal, I would have never found any of the wonderful works that I have come to love if it wasn't for this story getting me addicted to fan fictions
Again though, thank you for creating this masterpiece, I just marathoned the entire story again after reading that last chapter, it's currently 5:09 A.M. and I have work tomorrow (or today I suppose...) AND I DON'T CARE!

It was an honor to walk this road with you and so many other fans, its been one hell of a journey and I wouldn't trade the time spent reading this for anything

Thank you

This makes me regret not getting totally caught up with the story... #sadface

ANTHROPOLOGY MARATHON STARTING NOW!!!!

Hello JasonTheHuman!

I ABSOLUTELY love this story, its one of the very best that I have read ever since I became a Brony.
Your story alone has also made me view Lyra in a completely different light - similar to what My Little Dashie did for the way that I viewed Rainbow Dash. It also definitely resulted in me now having a new best pony more or less. Lyra is fantastic!

The only - and this really is the only negative feedback that I could give you would be that I felt you should have spent some more time on the last chapter, maybe going a little bit more in depth about what happened after the end. I don't want to point them out specifically here since there could be people still in the process of reading the story reading this comment of mine - and I would hate to spoil it for them.

Maybe you could at some point consider writing an Epilogue chapter telling us more what happened after the end of the story? If you would consider this I could send you a private message detailing the things that I felt was "somewhat missing"...

Apart from this - I SERIOUSLY AND BIGTIME APPLAUD YOU for this masterpiece of writing. /)*(\

Also one last thing: Could you please point me in the direction of the music and fan art that was inspired by this story. I'd love to hear/see them.

I want to see this as well...

MOAR MOAR MOAR!

Oh it's over :fluttercry:
But that's okay, anthropology was an awesome ride. CONGRATULATIONS! :raritywink:
You're awesome! :rainbowkiss:
