Add one flight-challenged pegasus with an ex-military Captain you get trouble, however, you also get the only force able to stop an invasion. Especially if that Captain isn't what he appears to be.

Is a horse soldier who travels under his own power cavalry, or infantry?

I am going to have to say Infantry.
I like this story. I really do. I envision some kinda WWI-esque era with a bit of Victorian for some reason. I'm looking forward to Iron Wing's contraption and how she comes about with its inception. I do have one writing suggestion to submit, if you'll take it.
Anypony who would've looked at the waterfall behind Canterlot would've noticed a pale colored shape being swept over the edge of it. Seriously though, how may ponies would think: “Gee I think that I shall look at yonder waterfall now.” The poor pony struggled to keep his head above water, a worthless battle in the state he was in. A strong undercurrent finally won out against him, pulling him under and causing his skull to hit a rock, effectively knocking him out.
Woah, this seems very interesting, I hope you can continue this ASAP! The writing is good, idea's great, though ya'll might wanna flesh out details a bit more, not too many mistakes, and some darn good humor to go along with it.
Ya'll have a nice day, now!
