Ponyville needs a train station that isn't a mile away, and Celestia has sent her trusted advisor to oversee the project. Should be a simple task, right?

... my mind really comes up with some weird ideas.

So, this was inspired by two things: 1) a discussion on SorceryNet's #ponythread chatroom about Mayor Mare's apparent lack of, well, mayoring, (I reasoned that most of the stuff she does is behind-the-scenes) and 2) my own ponderings about the train line that obviously wasn't running through Ponyville in Season 1 but had suddenly cropped up in Season 2. Others might be content to say it's a retcon and call it a day, but coming up with odd theories and filling in blanks that arguably didn't need to be filled is something I love to do, and any consideration of what's considered normal isn't going to take away my passion, dammit!

Oh, and I think it'll make a great story. That's a big part of it too. ^^

1418662 In other words THIS explains how Ponyvillie was improved in the time between Season 1 and Season 2.

I don't see a human tag, so what's with using the word "People" so much?

Also, it might be a bit better to use an indent at the begining of each paragraph.

Still, it's got something to do with railroads, so I'm watching.

Eh, 'people' can refer to ponies as well, because 'people' doesn't specifically mean humans.

Otherwise, this is me roaming the new submissions in my fancy schamany TWE capacity. Funnily enough it is a story about trains, but certainly is not a train wreck.
This being the case, carry on, good sir/madam. dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/emoticons/misc_Lyra2.png

Thanks for the comments!

1419802 Well, at least somewhat. ^^;

1419929 It's intentional (and no, it's not a human!fic.) In the second para, I wanted to imply that Celestia is interested in all manners of thinking being under her domain, and 'people' seemed like the right word to use - it's not particularly anthrocentric, in my view. Otherwise, there's not really a ponyfied term that I've come across that conveyed the same kind of gravitas or connotations as the singular mass noun "the people".

Still, I've reread it and it does seem like a few too many times, so I've reworked some of them. If it's still bothering some, I guess try and rework them as well.

1420313 NINJAS, THEY'RE EVERYWHERE! *hides*

Haha, thanks! I think. (That pun was certainly a doozy and a half. ^^)

Oh, and TWE? *checks profile* OHHH, now it makes sense. Certainly sounds like an interesting group, at the very least - at least it seems to be orientated towards helping, if the front page is anything to go by. Still, I guess I'm glad my quirky little fic isn't quite so terrible as to end up there. :twilightsheepish:

I seem to recall no less a luminary than Twilight Sparkle actually using the term "people." (A reference thereto.) You can't get a whole lot more canonical than that.

Then again, even I flinched. From one of my own scrawls:

There may have been eight million stories in the Naked City; for all I know, there might be eight million stories in Ponyville, population, well, I have no idea, but it’s certainly less than eight million. And is “population” even the right word when discussing ponies?

I'm persuaded that if the story is good enough, you can use whatever terminology you darn well please. Yours is.

1421533 I had not noticed, to be honest, but it is nice to see that I'm vindicated by canon. :pinkiehappy:

There is certainly an interesting conversation to be had about how far one should go in terms of ponifying turns of phrases. I feel I made the right choice in my case, and in the case of 'population' I'd say it is even more clear cut (after all, we refer to animal and even plant 'populations'.) But then again, perhaps TPTB have something different in mind - with those few exceptions, everyone's voice is equally valid when we explore the grey realm between canon and our own imaginations.

Or something like that. :)

And cheers, thanks! It's nice to know that there are people out there who like my writings. :twilightsheepish:

This is really neat, I love the concept behind it and the OC sounds very interesting, I hope to see more of this story.

1878706 Thanks! I was worried the concept was a little niche, but then again niche stories is practically my middle name. :twilightsheepish: And I'm glad you think Abigale is alright!

I'm looking forward to writing more of this story as well, but it usually takes a while. Hopefully not too long, though!

1908325 I suppose it could be seen that way but at the same time I feel like it's broad enough to catch plenty of folks. Don't feel you need to rush on writing, take your time and make sure you're happy with it. It's better to wait for something really good than get something not so hot right away:twilightsmile:

As well the comment about you writing niche has piqued my interest so following must occur n_n

1908720 Good to hear! And I apologise if I made it seem like I was suggesting rushing - I understand the importance of time as much as anyone.

Naw, thanks! ^^ I hope I don't fail you then!

1912227 *laughs* Nah, don't worry, just think it's a sentiment that's worth repeating n_n I have faith you won't!
