As I would imagine, the colt's name might come from a comet that was just passing by Equis at the time of his birth. Celestia, being how she is connected to the cosmos from her assocaition with the sun, would know about comets and such. So, why not? I see no morbidity in the foals name. Besides, it is the choice of the author, not anypony else's.
