It's a headcanon. This fic takes place just after Rainbow Rocks, so it hasn't been that long since the Fall Formal.
It also just makes sense to me--her best friends almost died, adter all. Applejack voices a similar opinion in "I Am a Monster"
Edit: just caught what you were asking. I don't know if it was confirmed anywhere, but that scene totally looks like she got possessed at the end, there. If you look closely, you can see her trying to take the crown off just before the transformation. She also tells Twilight in Friendship Games, "I put on a crown, and just like you, I was consumed by the magic it contained."

Yes and no? I'm not saying she's not responsible for everything else, but if she wanted to kill Twilight then she had a sledgehammer, she could have just hit her while she was running past to go rescue Spike. It's at least how I interpret it, and will be how I view it in my fics for the most part.

For similar reasons to why she didn't go to stop the Dazzlings, she decided not to beat up the Sunset Shimmer. Admittedly, I have slight pothole in how Sunset got a hold of the crown at that point, but once she actually put the crown on, there was no amount of werewolf magic that could help her.

A lot of the questions about werewolves will probably be answered in a sequel at some point, but for the most part they were irrelevant to the story, so i either didn't think about it or it just never came up.
As far as the betting pool is concerned, I originally had a bit planned for that, but I couldn't figure out how to fit it in. I'll probably find a spot for it during editting.
