I wanted to give him a good reason for his actions so I gave the reasoning that he believes he’s helping Starlight by giving her metaphors as she does the tasks for him so not only would he be getting out of doing all this, he’d impress Twilight by doing two things at once.
Of course, it’s a stupid plan, but it’s Spike. He’s the prince of not thinking things through.
