Usually stories would contain crazy adventures and friendships blossoming within Equestria but this isn't some fantasy with a high at the end...
This is about Astral, a human stuck in the world that just isn't okay with how things are going. A journal is made in hopes to raise his spirits and help him through his feelings.
This story really does speak to the heart, doesn't it? The human condition. It's very lovely even despite the uncertain, grey ending.
Now that I'm more grown, I really appreciate these kinds of endings, I feel there's a deeper happiness to be found in something like that. People's hearts don't change so easily. To think that they would with a few pretty words and good intentions is foolhardy. The mind has a nasty way at getting its own shirt caught on the doorknob as it fixates on the one little bad thing and none of the good things. We replace the feeling of being grateful with the feeling of being in debt with the kindness presented to us. We can only find worth in the things we provide. All of those mentalities, funny enough, were something we adapted to in our societies. Bred into us. To provide and then die.
That's why I found your ending very touching, more than any happy ending. Not even the wonderful creatures and magic of Equestria can fix a broken heart at the flick of a switch. We shouldn't expect that ANYTHING can either. Learning to live with yourself is an eternal process. Great story friend.
