Meteor Star is the son of Princess Twilight, Queen of Equestria officially. He follows in his mother's hoof steps in sticking to his studies about magic and he aspires to be an astronomist, meaning again, more studies. Twilight recognizes his priorities and lifestyle as how she used to be all those years ago, so what's a worried mother to do? Why send him to Ponyville of course! There he will be surrounded by his honorary aunt's, and she believes he will get along nicely with his honerary cousins there too. . .and learn what she did so long ago.

Looks fairly good. The only issue I have is that I really can't see Ponyville being nine hours away by train. By the (admittedly sketchy) maps, it's as far from Ponyville to the foot of the mountain Canterlot is perched on as it is from Ponyville to the castle in the Everfree.

Yeah I find it weird it would be that long to. I was just going off of how long it took in "MMM Mystery", but I've just looked up a couple discussions on the topic and some suggested that there were two routes to get to Canterlot depending on the time of day, so now that I know that, I think i'll shorten it. Thank you for the input! :)

Well, I don't think that just because one parent is an Alicorn means the foal also always has to be one. Meteor's mother is a unicorn-turned-Alicorn and his father is an earth-pony, I think that since that's the case, their kids could either be a Alicorn, a unicorn, or an earth-pony, but not a pegasus since neither parents started out as one or have any known pegasus relatives.
