While the Bearers of the Elements of Harmony were enjoying a small get-together with their interdimensional guests, the on-duty Knights had to deal with a few problems. Or rather, a single large problem.
“So let me get this straight.” The only thing that kept the expression of disbelief from Trixie’s face was the years of stage performance. “You want to be a Knight. Despite not having any training, or even being a member of the Guard, you insist that you will be a valuable addition.”
“That’s right.” Oh, how she wanted to smack that smug look right off of Blueblood’s face. But, unfortunately for the former showmare, that would be assault, and it could see her suspended from duty. “Get out of my way.” But it would be worth it, she mused.
“Knight-Commander Armor is the only one with the authorisation to promote a pony to the rank of Knight. Take it up with him.” Blink was just unamused, and didn’t even bother to hide his contempt for the prince. “Leave us alone, we have a war to fight and you - ”
“You dare speak to a member of the royal family like that!?” Blueblood shouted at them. “I will have you court-martialed!”
Trixie rolled her eyes. “How about this, your highness,” she said through gritted teeth, “you beat one of us in a spar, and we’ll take your request to the Knight-Commander.”
“You.”
“I’m sorry?” The suddenness of the statement had caught her off-guard, leaving her standing there and blinking in confusion.
“I said you. As in I will spar with you,” the prince said with complete confidence.
The Knights glanced at each other. They all knew the rampant sexism that made up much of life, and the idea of a mare beating him up was one too good to pass up. “All right then, your highness,” Blink replied with a smirk. “We’ll let the private here give you your spar.”
“A private? Bah, this should be foal’s play.”
Trixie followed Blink into the barracks, away from the suicidally overconfident royal. “Trix, you know what to do.”
“Humiliate him. Like Trixie didn’t know that,” she added sarcastically.
“No, you’re going to make him look like the biggest idiot Celestia’s sun ever had the misfortune to shine upon,” he whispered. As Trixie removed her armour plates, he continued. “A few illusions should do the trick."
“Actually, no, I’ve changed my mind.” Blueblood’s obnoxiously loud voice drifted through the doors. “I’ll think I’ll fight him instead.”
“If you want,” came the reply, the stallion sounding very distant.
“Astral Gaze?” Blink muttered. “Oh this is gonna be sad.”
“Sir, could you give me some help removing my armour?” the stallion asked. “I want to get this over with as quickly as possible.”
“Help me out here, Frost,” Firebolt said, his brother moving to assist.
“He’s blind!” Blueblood said in shock, catching sight of the misty blue unicorn’s milky-white eyes.
“I don’t need my eyes to see,” he replied, his sightless eyes focusing on the prince. “If anything, I see more than you ever could.”
“Did he just make a joke?” Blink asked quietly.
“I think so,” Trixie answered, just as quietly.
“Did you just insult me?”
“Not as much as you insult the crown by existing,” the Knight responded, smirking slightly.
“You - !” The gathered Knights did their best to hide their amusement, but more than a few ended up snorting. “How dare you!? You think you can speak to me like that!?”
“You think you can throw your power about and brandish your title like some spoilt brat?” Astral asked back calmly, his tone never rising.
The gathered ponies could practically see the steam rising from the infuriated prince’s ears. “How dare you!?” he screamed, lashing out with a hoof. Astral Gaze barely moved, instead just tilting his head a little to the left. The loss of balance sent Blueblood sprawling in the dirt.
“The right to freedom of speech,” he replied calmly as the royal picked himself up. “I can say what I want, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me.” He ducked under a clumsy left hook before tapping the prince with a hoof, making him lose his balance again.
“You - !” Blueblood decided to forgo all subtlety, instead unleashing a wave of telekinetic force at the Knight.
Astral Gaze moved with all the grace of a dancer, dodging to the left with a pirouette before dropping back to all fours himself. Before the prince could do anything, he took a shot to the gut that felt more like a kick from a hydra than any mere show of magic.
As he lay there in the dirt, panting for breath, Blink appeared in his field of view. “Consider your application denied,” he said before kicking some dirt into his face to rub it in.
Don't matter what universe you in,
Blueblood = Pwned.
The favourite menu didn't tell me this story is updated and I wouldn't have find out if I hadn't looked into the recently updated column.
WTF?
2291700 i haz to agree bro.
seriously, blue blood is just a little bitch waiting for his ass to be pounded in by a big black guy named bubblez yelling IMA RAPE YA BITCH,,!
2291740
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand you just spawned the idea for a prison-rape clopfic starring Blueblood.
I don't really get the Blueblood hate. While he was a bit of a prat, I always thought Rarity was being a humongous social climbing whorish weasel in that episode and was more than glad Bluey was stringing her along like some cheap trick from Saigon.
And I like Rarity most times.
Please, can someone explain it to me?
LIFE HAS NEVER FELT SO GOOD
2291768
Just one of those things, like Lyra and her obsession with humans, that is ingrained into the fandom.
2291749 ill get darth or twilightclopple on it right away
Ahh... That felt good... I love Blueblood, especially when he's being owned like a little bitch that he is.
Astral Gaze, that name makes loads of sense now!
Hehe, Blueblood got pwnd.
2291768 Cheap trick from Saigon?
Missing " at the end.
2291723
Yeah, me too. What the hell, Fimfic?
2291768
Because this fandom is obsessed with expanding their appearance and behaviour, no matter how long screen time of a character, into their entire personality.
Blueblood was a prat for a few minutes, instantly making him a self centred cunt with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
Soarn' ate a pie, so every time he is mentioned in a fic, the words 'love' and 'pie' have to be within two sentences of his mention.
Vinyl and Octavia are both into music, so they're obviously lesbian lovers.
Lyra was sitting weirdly for a few seconds, so obviously she must be completely obsessed with humans, and since she was next to Bon Bon its pretty clear they're a couple. I mean c'mon! They were on a bench together! They have to be lovers!
We haven't seen Scootaloo's parents, so obviously she's an orphan, or at least has family issues (eg, abusive parents).
These are basically law, and if you don't abide you're a shameful example of a brony.
*sigh*
I really hate fanon sometimes.
2292183
Yeah, fanon has issues, no denying that. But there wasn't really much I could do in terms of Blueblood since I made him a twat in the previous story. I basically wrote myself into a corner there. Not proud of it.
2292202
The Blueblood one I don't mind, because it isn't as common as most and it fits with the idea of old monarchs and those raised in nobility. Blue blood actually means 'of noble birth'.
That said, if you really wanted to you could still balance him out a bit. You could make him really good at economic things/law/whatever the prince is supposed to do besides being a money spending twat to bring a little balance against his cocky, self-centred personality.
If you wanted to give him more 'screen time', that is.
2292215
Well, the fact that he wants to fight, instead of bitch and moan about the war, is something. I actually had a scene planned for some random minor noble to complain to Luna about wanting the war to end, and her conscripting him on the spot. "If you want this war to end, then you shall help do so."
But yeah, he'd have to be tolerated if he actually made himself useful.
I almost feel bad for Blueblood sometimes, almost
stupid blue blueblood
Hay at least he wants to fight, bravo Blueblood *claps hands*, bravo.
2292183
I actually plan to turn the fandom's expectations on their heads when some of these background ponies show up in something I'm writing. Just sayin'.
2292097
Yeah, like her. What's the difference from how she was acting and how Rarity was acting - I mean, really. Rarity was almost spreading herself open to him in order to go up in social status. He didn't fit her expectations of how she thought he should act so she gets all pissy about it. Which I suppose makes her not a whore (she has standards), just a social viper - and with Fancy Pants, it's obvious some men are social whores as well. Shit, all these supposed 'good' ponies the fandom loves are the worst possible role models ever. And yet more real for it I suppose.
2292582 Well, I think all of the characters in the show are flawed in some way or another, but I wouldn't say this makes them bad role models. What you've got to remember is that Rarity's whorish attitude towards Blueblood as well as her eventual rejection of him portrayed a number of important lessons (e.g. 'Don't go scrambling for the fly of someone's pants just because they have money'). True, Rarity's initial skanky-ness was rather out of tune for the supposed 'element of generosity', but in the end of the day she learns her lesson and grows as a person.
As for Fancy Pants, he shows that being part of a high class society doesn't make you a snobby prick, and that you can't judge someone on Pre-conceived conceptions...Oh, and that wearing a monocle=babes.
2292582
If that something is Oh To Be Old Again, I'm looking forward to it.
2292256
From what you've shown of him, it's easier to link his request to wanting fame and glory by joining an elite force rather than actually wanting to help.
DI.
FUCKING.
NIED.

Since always.
2292183 So people tend to latch on to the one visible trait given by minor or background characters, can you really blame them for wanting to stick with what's been established? It's not really worth getting so angry about. Sure it's a bit of lazy writing, but most of it's based on what's been given. If writers deviate too far from what has been established or completely change someone's character then it's understandable that some readers are going to be irate.
There's an ancient proverb that goes "An honest witness tells the truth, but a false witness tells lies." While most people would read this and say, "Well, duh, of course a false witness would tell lies, are you stupid?", you need to look deeper to see what it really means. Sure, if someone tells the truth they're an honest witness, and if they lie they're a dishonest witness, but how does this relate to the person themselves? It relates by telling us that you can gauge a person on their actions: You are what you do, but in the same way you also do what you are.
Let's apply this to the characters you mentioned and see how it reflects on them.
Blueblood acting like a pompous jerk and embarrassing people on a single occasion makes it much more likely that he's the kind of person who would like to embarrass people on any given occasion. This means that either he's a prince who really, really doesn't want to be at the gala with Rarity and isn't even trying to be kind, or he's a massive fop that takes pleasure in seeing her squirm. Either way the show is telling us that he's not really the shining standard of excellence that Rarity hoped he'd be, so it's natural that fan-writers would portray him similarly. He's not eternally portrayed as a jerk though, as can be seen in the story "The Best Night Ever" or "The Flight of the Alicorn".
Soarin making a huge deal about a pie in several scenes means that he must really love pie, or perhaps pastries and food in general. Perhaps he's just really an exciteable person. Either way, this is insight into his given character, and as one of very clues to his identity, people are reluctant to drop it completely.
The OctaXScratch is a bit weird, but people enjoy writing this because stark differences between characters serves as a means to explore various issues and themes. The two are distinguished by race, social status, music type and stage personalities. Pairing them together despite the fact that they share the same gender allows writers to explore the topic of homosexuality (which seems mostly taboo in western society) and decide whether or not it is taboo in the MLP universe (which tends to show MANY more mares than stallions). I personally wouldn't ship it, but the character contrasts allow for some really entertaining stories. I think I'd write them as entertaining friends, possibly with Octavia getting dragged out of high pony society and into a more energetic world.
Lyra and Bon-Bon appear on a bench in one scene, and together at a cafe in another. I think they tend to be paired up in other places as well, because the animators felt their colours complemented each other. From what we've seen, Lyra tends to be a little on the weird side (slouching posture where others would lie down, jumping around wildly in the background) and apparently has a mark to do with music so people display her as more of a free-spirit. The "human" obsession thing is a bit dumb (especially now that others have been shown in the same slouching posture) but it's dumb in a funny way. I wouldn't write it myself, but I can see the appeal of a character that is completely out of touch with reality (or in touch with another reality), and who better to use than that weird mare who sits funny and is always jumping around in the background? As for Bon-Bon... well she shows up with so many different voice actors and attitudes that I'm not even sure how to classify her. She's got a candy mark, so I'm going to go with "sophisticated in a worldly way" and possibly "under a terrible curse to never speak the same way twice". For many of the same reasons as Octy and Scratch (race, personality, jobs), people tend to pair the two because the inherent contrasts provide easy conflict. Again, they'd easily make just good friends (they were sharing a meal when the parasprites ate everything).
Ah, Scootaloo. She speaks often about how cool or awesome Rainbow Dash is and frequently tries to learn everything from her. It's an adorable tale of one little kid looking up to one big kid/adult. Except that Scoots' flight training is something that one would logically think responsible parents would oversee. But wait, perhaps this is just the way it is in equestria, with parents allowing kids to learn everything themselves because it's all so safe? What if she's like the other foal-fillies? Let's see, Applebloom doesn't seem to even HAVE parents, (and her family can't watch her very often) and although Sweetie Belle HAS parents they always seem to be away, (and Rarity is running a full business that doesn't allow her much in the way of time to spend with her sister). She could be like that, right? No parents present, but maybe a home life? Honestly it's possible, but she NEVER has any family interactions. NONE at all. No parents disapproving of her trouble or congratulating her at the ponyville play, no Big Sister partnership attendance at the Sisterhooves Social. No family shown. Ever. Does this mean she has a terrible homelife? Probably not. This would leave scars and emotional problems, and would likely become the subject of a CMC episode. Does this mean she has an awesome homelife, or at least a boring one? Again, probably not. Scootaloo is a chatterbox and she'd likely gush or complain if her life was really awesome or boring (plus they'd probably at least have a token appearance in an episode if that was the case). Does she have no parents? Honestly, this seems like the best bet given that no one ever turns up to help her except her one and only idol/big sister figure Rainbow Dash (watch how often the CMC treat "Big Sisters" as parent figures, especially with Apple Bloom and Sweetie Bell).
All in all, these are the interpretations that have been taken because they are the easiest interpretations; they ring true without having to make a story bend over backwards explaining cannon character traits that wouldn't make much sense otherwise. Sure, they may turn up often in stories and people may frown on divergence, but that's because the simplest answers are usually the most correct. Any story that relies on assumptions for things not stated in the show ought to provide a really convincing argument in support, especially if they conflict with or contradict what HAS been in the show.
