By telling the readers about the MC's life instead of showing it and timeskipping ahead, you kind of cheat the MC's character growth and your readers, that is all..

Ah, well. Maybe you can shown bits and pieces of the MC's growth in the form of flashbacks? Look at it this way, good character growth, world building, and plot progression may lead to possible cross-overs, within reasoning of course and that said cross-over chapters have a good reason why. Basically those three elements of a story can draw interest from other displaced writers.
