Hmmm so Thunderbolt is nearly done. Will he get hyped up enough to actually speak like Spike?
Interesting, so the parasite is performing a final merge then? Hmmm...
Keep going! ;)
Not really a parasite then, is it? More of a neural symbiont, enhancing cognitive functions in exchange for the services of its host. Manipulative little bugger, but not exclusively harmful.
8887660 Of course it's a symbiont. In a close relationship by two different organisms, the symiont is, and I quote: "The smaller of the two."
It can be a parasite and a symbiont.
Spicy was half right. It was a high-end, ultra close-up nature documentary film specially directed for Fluttershy only.
Ask Applejack: Do you think your new form might benefit you with your farm shores?

That's not quite what I meant. I was talking about how parasites are defined as having a strictly harmful relationship with their host. Things like bloodsuckers, intestinal worms, brain fungi; nothing but de-buffs ranging in severity from "annoying, but survivable" to "absolutely fatal". Because our little worm here has been actually enhancing Rainbow's mental (also magical?) functions (albeit for self-serving reasons), it is technically not a parasite. Well, not unless this "final Stage" involves permanently hijacking her neural system in such a way as to cause degradation or death of personality (harmful to Rainbow Dash personally, if not biologically), but you wouldn't do something like that to us, would you?
Not that I'm saying you should change the name of the story, since the worm is a lot closer to what people think of when they hear the word "parasite," that what "symbiont" brings to mind (probably due in no small part to Spiderman's overly clingy costume foe, Venom (seriously, every story I've come across that actually says "symbiont" seems to involve sapient spandex...)), just pointing out that it is not factually accurate.
8887856 The issue I have is that I am working off the biological definitions of the two words:
Parasite: an organism that live in/off its host, deriving nutrient to its host detriment.
The organism in this case is doing this. Rainbow Dash's ability to function in society has been hampered by the organism. Not all parasites are fatal. Consider mosquitoes. They are undeniably parasites, and yet they don't (although the bad things they carry might) kill their hosts.
Symbiont/symbiote: The smaller of two organisms where two different organisms live in close proximity, or especially in a symbiotic relationship.
This definition was changed about 6 years ago because basically everyone in biology used it differently. So a decision was made and this is the resultant definition of the word now. Gut bacteria, dogs, cats, birds, mice, rats, etc, are all symbiotes to humans. That this parasite is a symbiont is regardless to the fact it is feeding off its host to its host's detriment.
This has been brought up before, and just like all the research I had to do on neural structure, I made sure my usage was correct.

I agree with you to call it parasite in this story. Simply because it invaded the host without consent and kept itself hidden from its host, while symbiont should happen with both sides’ agreement.

Huh, the more you know.
The enhanced intelligence still makes it feel kind of iffy for me though. Mosquitoes don't normally clean your teeth while they suck your blood, after all. Heck, if I could get what amounts to a bit of extra grey-matter in exchange for a supercharged libido and the occasional bout of sleepwalking, I would sign the fuck up. I can't think of another parasite that any sane person (and I do consider my self sane
no matter what the doctor says) would actually want.8888224 Also, don't worry. I will not be going bad-end with any of these characters. The parasite (in Rainbow Dash) is completely mature now, and any outward effects it would have on a host are now complete. There are some things she will learn to do, using the "gift" it has given her, but that is for later.
Unless Fluttershy's wolfhound has a parasite of her own, she'll never reach the level of Thunderbolt's intelligence or dominance. So yeah, she (Fluttershy) should perhaps learn to deal with the idea of lying next to her best friend to service her (Rainbow's... for now) master.
8888248 There's a lot of simplicity to how a wolf thinks. There is hunting, there is pack, there is being in charge, and there is not being in charge. Bridget likes to think she is a mated pair with Fluttershy. Sex is not common between them (since for Bridget at least, heat isn't that common), but they do play a little to help each other feel good. Outwardly, Fluttershy is mostly into her fantasies and being a voyeur. The attention from Thunderbolt was not something she appreciated, although it was quickly forgotten since, at her core, Fluttershy understands animal behavior.
to spicy: "would you be willing to use these items on dashy if she is willing to let you do so without restrictions" *gives spicy a ball-gag, a wound up length of rope, and three baseballs. and with a smirk and a wink i disappear in a flash of light*
Bridles eh?
I think I know a guy, who knows a guy, who might be able to arrange delivery of some appropriate stock.

Now I'm wondering if Thunderbolt is going to have any oops moments with his fire breath. Fortunately, I shouldn't have to wait too long, since there's another few dozen chapters yet to be read. I love starting stories that have have a significant amount of material ready.
