To their knowledge, they are one of the last remnants of humanity, and some of the only intelligent life forms left in the universe. NUCLEAR WAR DOES NOT WORK LIKE THAT. Even at a full scale nuclear exchange, the vast majority of Africa and South America would not be targets, so most of the people there would survive, even accounting for nuclear winter.
Why is it that every fourth-rate author will mindlessly assume that humanity is doomed to destroy itself? Why?
Guess what, during the sixties, seventies, and eighties there were massive anti-nuclear protests. Massive as in demonstrations that had hundreds of thousands of people.
Now lets look at the Equestrians. Prior to the events of Heartswarming Eve, they were engaged in a three way war so brutal it actually summoned the Windgos. Even as their original homeland was being frozen solid, they continued to wage war. And when the survivors reached a new unspoiled homeland? They started it up again. Let's be honest with ourselves, ponies have a far greater tendency for self destruction then human ever have had.
