Just a silly little one-shot I pieced together on a whim to test the waters.

Masaki Andoh has gotten himself very, very lost this time. But why should that stop him from indulging in a little friendly competition...?

Crossover with Super Robot Wars: Original Generation

Cute and enjoyable.
Sorry, tend to be pretty concise - can't think of much else to say. Enjoyed it, though. Nice SRW crossover.

You asked me to look over Racing the Wind, and offer some idea of why it got so many downvotes?

First, the piece is well written, with good grammar and careful attention to the proper details. Technically, the story is excellent, at least in my opinion.

That said, I think it is reasonable to say that Super Robot Wars is not the least known to most people. I know of it, but I have serious lady-boners for both anime, and more importantly, obscure Japanese games. Princess Crown, Bangaioh, Odo Odo Oddity, Rinkle River Adventure, Rainbow Cotton, Prikura Daisakusen are some of many on my shelves. And of course Super Robot Wars F, among others.

The only reason I know about such treasures (Treasure... ahhh. Love most of their games) is because I am a fourteen-year veteran of the industry, who once, long ago, did art and design for companies like EA, Broderbund, Activandals (those scumbags!) and so forth. In that career, I became an anime and obscure game nerd. This is not most people's experience.

And that, I think is the issue. You wrote a good little story that can only appeal to someone who has the slightest idea of what you are referencing, and that would likely be less than 100 people in the whole of the US, where the majority of FimFiction gets its audience. Racing The Wind is almost entirely - from start to end - Super Robot Wars, it is like 90% Super Robot Wars versus 10% Rainbow Dash. Yes, the mechs are around Dash, yes, she is in every scene... flying by. We don't know what Rainbow feels, or thinks or what matters to her. The story isn't about Rainbow Dash meeting mechs. It's about mechs meeting Dash.

You wrote a Super Robot Wars story, in a place and time where what is wanted, needed and understood is pony stories. Pony comes first, pony comes last. Pony is all.

Instant increase in upvotes: make every character equinoid, turn their names into pony names, and the names of their mechs into pony mech names, and go into some detail to describe the mechs as mechanical pony robots. Electric manes, plasma tail whips, FETLOCK MISSILE!!!! You get the idea.

Even better, write about how being a pony changes being a mech-pilot. Do their tails need special seats? Are the controls different, and in what way? Do they need cranial connections, or are there hoof-controllers somehow? Does their flight suit itch their luxurious pony coats? That is what is wanted here. Pony. Lots and lots of pony. And then... more pony.

Even if nopony here - excuse me, noBODY here - had the slightest clue about Super Robot Wars (and this is the fact), they could still enjoy a story, thinking that you were referencing some anime or something and doing a pony parody that was filled with pony stuff. Because that is what this place is about - pony fiction, FIM - Friendship Is Magic - fiction. That is what the audience wants.

Matching content to audience matters a lot! Going to a Star Trek fanfiction site and writing a pony story with only one tiny reference to somepony watching Trek on a screen in the back would not do well. It would be downvoted like crazy. Though to be fair, a pony trek story that was mostly trek - as in all the characters from trek become ponies - would probably go over, because, hey, Trekkies are pretty OK with weird stuff, on average. They likes them some parody, which they would see that as. But the key is percentages. Mostly Trek for a Trek-centered site, and mostly pony for a pony-centered site.

And that, in my unfortunately long-winded way, is what I think is the real issue. Your story is fine, as such, it just lacks sufficient pony. It isn't mostly pony, it doesn't cater to pony love, it caters to Super Robot Wars love first and foremost. And the brutal fact is, this is not SRWfiction.net, and that determines everything right there.

These are my thoughts on why the low response, and the down thumbs. In my opinion, you write very well, you just aren't tickling your audience where they want to be tickled, which is in the pony gland.

And it's all about proper tickling, here in the brothel that is writing.

That is my thought on the matter. Muffin, but this flight-suit itches my coat, and... the cyber-helmet doesn't have a hole for my horn! How is a unicorn supposed to pilot this mech? Gahhh!

The people who down votes this are idiots plane and simple ignorant to the manly awesomeness that is the super robot wars/taisen anime, all three seasons. I personally have seen all three and you captured Masaki's personality perfectly along with how Rainbow Dash challenged one of the fastest robots I known of :rainbowdetermined2: and nearly won. :raritydespair:

I personally hope to see another meet up of the two with Dash more prepared for the Elemental Lord of Wind's tricks. I want to see if a Sonic Rainboom can match up with the Akashic Buster. Maybe you could have the two meet up during some kind of attack (on either side of the cartoon line) and the two tag team their opponents. I can see Rainbow Dash buzzing some of the Personal Troopers before they get sliced and diced by Cybuster.:pinkiehappy::rainbowlaugh:

1883899 Haha...wow, thanks! Thanks very much. It's really nice to know there are some people who actually like this. I admit it may be short, but I did put a lot of energy into it. It was as much a writing exercise, sort of, as a fic, since I wanted to try doing a crossover where neither of the participants got to speak to each other and yet still got to...communicate and connect on some level. And Dash and Masaki seemed like the best combo for that, at least to start with. If this had been more popular I might have attempted to match up other sets of SRW and FIM characters in a similar way, maybe from the reverse perspective, but I just don't think this site has the right crowd for it.

Honestly, the end of the race is supposed to be sort of a tie, with each of them showing the other their signature move in the process, but if I had to pick a winner I'd say it was Dash, if just barely; she beat him to the ground and even forced him to switch modes and come to a sudden stop.

...I'd be lying if I said I had never wanted to do a sequel though, and your excitement for one is pretty contagious. Masaki and RD were both a blast to write--way more fun than I'd expected in Dash's case. Masaki's always been one of my favorite characters, though, and I always loved the idea of a Super Robot whose forte was pure, impossible speed rather than straight-up power (not that those aren't kickass too!).

I'll...think on it. It's very tempting, despite the poor viewer response to this one. In the meantime, if you enjoyed this, maybe take a peek at my other fic, "Twilight Sparkle & the World Eaters"--it's also a crossover, though of a very different flavor.
