Advanced math lessons are not practical in real life · 12:09pm Mar 3rd, 2020

We all studied math, right? Algebra, calculus, trigonometry, solving x's and y's, etc. I'm sure you also encounter the quadratic formula.

Well, when you enter the corporate world, did you realize that these lessons are not useful after all? I sure am.

Good to see in Common Ground that the analysis of Buckball statistics I imagined in Buckball Abstract is now canon.

I think it must be time to investigate this branch of applied mathematics further.

Going to Seed provides more than one puzzle for those who love trying to decipher how Equestria works. If tales of the Great Seedling were not enough to engage your intellect, here’s another mystery: What the hay is the Confluence?

A Math Question: · 6:37am Jan 27th, 2020

How many words of dialogue do you think are in all of the episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic? How does the answer change if you include the movie, the holiday special, the various shorts, and the Rainbow Roadtrip special? How does the answer change if you include all canon Equestria Girls material? Bonus Round: How does the answer change if you include all lines of dialogue in the official comics and official books?

Have fun! I don't know the answer!

Statistics #5: Friendliest Fleet · 9:05am Mar 22nd, 2019

Well, not statistics per se, but mathematics. With some unexpected conclusions.

It started yesterday, when Fylifa, who had been asking me to figure out a way to compare the popularity of different ships based on the Fimfarchive dataset – something that remains a puzzle, because FimFiction does not have shipping tags, and figuring out which ships a particular story espouses from text alone is nontrivial – came up with one herself.

Radix-Economy & Monetary Denominations. · 4:21am Oct 22nd, 2015

The most apes use decimal currency. In most currencies, the largest currencies are 100 or 1,000. The smallest denominations is generally .01. One could have these denominations:

1,000.00
0,100.00
0,010.00
0,001.00
0,000.10
0,000.01

The denominations are far apart, thus making change difficult. Most countries use pseudonbinary:

1,000.00
0,500.00
0,250.00
0,100.00
0,050.00
0,025.00
0,010.00
0,005.00
0,002.00
0,001.00
0,000.50
0,000.25
0,000.10

Triple Trouble · 10:14pm Jun 19th, 2015

I like to write at least one chapter ahead... usually don't get to on account of my slowness. But this time I wrote a chapter ahead and it was around 70K. I like to divide my chapters up here at between 40 and 50K since longer is harder to load and search through, and shorter is too jerky and noncommittal. Limiting it at 45K or so obliges me to occasionally make sure the scene is clearly established, instead of just running on continuously forever.

Illness vs. Sickness · 2:27am Jul 11th, 2020

I haven't been able to write (or do) hardly anything in months, even though I'm off during the Summer and stuck inside. At first I thought it was mental illness, but much of it's still physical, and I don't quite know where the separation twixt the two lies.

Also, the brony world appears to have descended into chaos.

I like writing my most recent story, however I'm at a sort of standstill. I want to try something different with it so it doesn't grow stale, both for reading and writing purposes. I don't know. But I also feel like like that's kind of cheating and so I have some reservations.
