I like to write at least one chapter ahead... usually don't get to on account of my slowness. But this time I wrote a chapter ahead and it was around 70K. I like to divide my chapters up here at between 40 and 50K since longer is harder to load and search through, and shorter is too jerky and noncommittal. Limiting it at 45K or so obliges me to occasionally make sure the scene is clearly established, instead of just running on continuously forever.
But dividing this chapter in two gave me 30K and 40K at best. There's a clear and important stopping point at the end of it, so I couldn't just add more story past that 30K to get to my self imposed minimum. Keep in mind that I have a full chapter written before this one, as well. Since I hadn't posted that chapter, it allowed me to borrow from the end of it. So rewriting the end of the next chapter, and dividing the next next chapter at a good point into about 25 and 45, that gave me 25K plus a bonus from the previous, around 30K and 45K now.
That meant I had three chapters, the middle one at 30K. It's a rough draft level of course, so it's pretty easy to go through and find the places where I just skipped over something hastily that I wanted to cover more fully, or even forgot something entirely. That lets me flesh out the 30K into 40~something~K, giving me 3 chapters, all acceptable to consider posting. As of a few minutes ago.
So, that's why the delay. I ended up having to write 3 chapters in a row, without being able to exactly publish the first one. Hopefully I won't get snarled up like that much; I don't mean to be piccayunish, but the end of the third chapter really is one of those fixed points in time that were integral to my original idea about this. Sorry about that. I'll get posting the chapter now, instead of leaving you and NotBelle hanging there mid-sentence ready to fall asleep from boredom.
That's a lot of writing... when will it be ready?

Why do you keep using numbers in the tens of thousands? Are you referring to character count? If so, why?

What do you mean? The more characters, the longer it is. The fewer characters, the shorter. Why wouldn't I use character count?
3165295 I just see most people use a word count, so it is kind of different. It was... different. You also didn't mention what you meant, you just used the numbers without a context.

Oh, haha sorry. I use a letter count, because your word count goes down when you use large words. I try not to wax sesquipedalian, but I don't like getting punished for using a word that's more than 4 letters. Plus letters are more consistent, and lots easier to measure, since you don't have to count spaces, or check reliably for words like R2-D2 (2 words, 1 word, or none?)
