The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » Device Survey Results · 11:00am Aug 1st, 2013

So far there have been 3,348 results on the survey which is enough for me to make some assessments on. Thanks a lot guys for answering, it helps.

Firstly we can see an overwhelming desktop predominance, which is to be expected. I didn't ask whether Opera or IE were mobile versions, but if we assume they were all desktop users then 81% of users use a desktop/laptop for the main device to access Fimfiction.

We can see Chrome has a decent 50% lead over Firefox nowadays, which matches up with our analytics stats.

On the mobile side of things, Android (Android Browser + Mobile Chrome + Mobile Firefox) is at 9%, while iOS (Safari mobile) is at 7%, giving Android a slight lead (and yes I know Chrome and Firefox are available on iOS too, but I'm fairly confident that almost all the mobile chrome answers are Nexus users).

For secondary devices, we can see mobiles take a huge turn, as expected. Nearly 50% of secondary devices answers are mobiles. Here's where it gets interesting though. If we add up Android browsers here we get a whopping 29% of users, compared to just 14% on iOS. I'm not sure why this is, but even if we did ignore mobile chrome and mobile firefox, the android browser actually nearly catches up to safari on its own.

Finally we see some stats on what people typically use. I'm glad to see tablets are so high now. Interestingly, 76% of people answering that they use a desktop primarily doesn't match up with the primary device question!

I'm annoyed that I didn't ask Android vs iOS specifically, because that was the main thing I wanted to gauge from this survey. Nonetheless, I think Android is convincingly beating iOS on penetration nowadays which makes my decision to make an Android app a good one.

Thanks again for taking part.

What about an app for my Korean DS clone?

Fuck your gay site, knighty.

You bet your sweet website Android id better!

HUZZAH FOR DESKTOP
HUZZAH FOR CHROME

HUZZAH FOR DESKTOP CHROME!!!!!!

Chrome beats Firefox still! That's right, our multicoloured circle of death still beats a ferocious fire-demon-fox.

Wow, I'm a little surprised that IE is so low, I would have expected something more in the teens.

I didn't ask whether Opera or IE were mobile versions, but if we assume they were all desktop users then 81% of users use a desktop/laptop for the main device to access Fimfiction.

Knighty what are you doing? You can't just assume things. Clearly the 5% came from the IE/Opera mobile users then.

5% of the 7%? Yeah I don't think so.

1254575 5%-units, not 5%

....what?

YAY:yay: I´m totaly going to download it. Thanks Knighty:heart:

I listed mobile as my primary because its how I spend the most cumulative time reading fimfiction, but there have (or had been) a few hinky things that made trying to write comments or edit my stories too troublesome to not use the PC for.

Basically in my case that conflict is about reality vs desire. I HAVE to consider my pc to be my primary, because if I only had my phone, I wouldn't be able to do everything I wanted, but my phone is still my most used access to fimfiction.

1254576
I am amused by this banter. I don't know why.

1254577 The correct English term was apparently percentage points, but the point still stands. 7% used IE/Opera, if you don't assume all are desktop users the ratios match.

knighty

1254581
Only if you assume 5% of that 7% were mobile, which looking at the rest of the stats is enormously unlikely. I'm not stupid, you'll see that I acknowledge the fact that there are gaps due to potential answers I missed.

As for the Android app mentioned in the OP, the wording of that statement seems to indicate no similar app is being planned for iOS devices. Is that the case, or am I reading too much into that? Would be nice to know.

knighty

1254584
I don't have a Mac or any iOS device, so without buying one I can't do it anyway. Nonetheless, it doesn't mean there's nothing planned for iOS, it just won't be me.

1254586 Quite understandable. Thanks for the reply.

Can we get the list of what different browsers are included in the "other"?

what about a Windows 8 app?

1254582 Before I go into an argument that I will definitively lose because I lack any statistical knowledge of browser systems, the last thing I'll say is that the 2% from 'other' had no choice but to pick any of the three either.

I'll stop bugging you now.

knighty
Site Owner

1254591
That'll definitely be the last one if it ever happens, just because it has such tiny penetration.

1254588 I'm guessing not just browsers, but anything with Internet access like a 3DS, PS3, Xbox 360? and the likes.

I think Android is convincingly beating iOS on penetration

Armor-piercing is best penetration. :rainbowwild:

Bet you thought I was going to make a sexual reference, didn't ya? :trollestia:

iOS isn't all that bad, but I'm used to Android OS. Too bad we use Windows OS in our tablets at work....

1254569 Firefox Just makes hacking online games faster and easier. also Source Editing:pinkiehappy:

jaramat #25 · Aug 1st, 2013 · · 15 ·

I freaking hate all those immature beta faggots who scream "CHROME IS BEST CUZ I USE IT HURRRR" everywhere they go on the Internet. They are the cancer the most of sane Internet users fear the most. If there have never been Firefox, you would be still using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator today, you know. And still, Firefox beats your precious little Chrome in ways I consider the most important to myself: Customization and privacy protection, and when you look at it closely, even performance. Chrome only has more users than Firefox because of massive advertising, imposing and forced installations.

Sorry for my - kind of - off topic reply. I just had to get it out of my system.
If you don't know who I am replying to, just look at #1254566 and #1254569.

knighty

1254606
Some of that is true, but there was a long period of time where Chrome was just flat out better than Firefox. It had better performance, better dev tools (still does imo), and as a browser still looks better. Firefox has really caught up in performance now but it took its time.

1254605
Oh yes, hacking online games on Firefox is easy. So much easier. Too bad Firefox just wants to fuck my computer in general.

1254606
Honestly, I don't see the big deal. Chrome is more popular, and because it is, I make jokes about it. So what? I don't really want to see some kind of ploy at making Firefox users of a higher caliber because if they had more advertising, then they would be doing the same thing.

Move on and let things be. It is all in good fun. In the end, we can come together and hate on Internet Explorer together. Would that be nice?

As a windows phone user, I am offended that you didn't consider mobile ie.

Can't believe I wrote that without laughing...

i honestly prefer firefox over chrome. crashes less.

Well, i didn't see the survey but if I had to answer to all this, i'd say I use Chrome on my desktop, Chrome on my iOS, while using mostly my portable device.

Loyal #32 · Aug 1st, 2013 · · 2 ·

Master race chrome/desktop

Awwww I was hoping for an app for the iOS.:ajsleepy:

1254611 Honestly Firefox is completely freeware as far as I know so advertising was completely on the users, while Chrome was a neat little package on the net from Google, the fact that Firefox is on Equal terms with Chrome is quite outstanding.

Might I ask why you were happy about the relatively high use of tablets? The reason for this question is my experience in the use of smartphones is that they're complicated and consume electricity too fast whereas a typical mobile phone and even an MP4/MP3 lasts for over a week on average before recharging.

1254624
There are quite a few things I would like to change about both of the browsers, so by my standards, I agree. They are basically the same, with only a few things I like in Chrome over Firefox.

I must be one of the extremely few people who actually use Opera :V

On that note, Opera is actually bigger on mobiles/tablets than desktops, so i wouldn't be surprised if 50% of the 7% are mobile users.

knighty
Site Owner

1254625
Because I like tablets and I think they're great for reading on.

Eh, I'll just stick to Safari. Never really noticed a difference between it and Firefox and Chrome. Mostly because my internet sucks equally among the three of them. :twilightoops:

Thank you so much for maing an app! You cant believe how relieved my call for that request went unheard :3

1254606 Yes because on the internet there is such a thing as privacy. :ajbemused:

1254628
I honestly prefer reading on smaller screens. Yes, it means I have to move the page every time I reach the bottom of the screen. But when reading on desktop (or on laptop, in my case), I lose myself in text and have to search where I stopped reading quite often.
My device for reading - used to be: 2.2" 240x320 display of SEC510
- is: 4.3" 480x854 display of S Xperia L
As I said, I have probles with reading on bigger screens. But that's just me.

So....no app for iOS users? ;~;

1254627

I used Opera for the longest time because Google Chrome would download for me for some reason. Needless to say, it crashed every five minutes.

...which makes my decision to make an Android app a good one.

My prayers... answered, they have been.

Trying to type multi-paragraph forum threads and PMs are a gigantic pain in the ass on an android browser. If that gets fixed I would be the happiest man alive.

1254628 Hah! That probably explains why the reading experience works so well on my Nexus tablet. The only problem I ever tend to have is losing a half-written comment, and that's user error more than anything else.

I'm probably one of the few that use Internet Explorer, pretty much what I use for Youtube and FimFiction to be honest. :pinkiehappy: Though I also use Chrome and Firefox as well... when they actually want to work correctly.

But as for the results, they are pretty interesting.

Most of my fic reading happens via mobile IE. Gotta love dem' Windows phones...

You're making an android app?! happy days

1254672 You know what this calls for? A PARTY! :pinkiehappy:
