This was certainly a very competent story, if nothing else. Your dialogue and detail were fine, although it had a bit too much infodumping in certain places. This story's biggest flaw would be that it clearly borrows from an existing story, but doesn't do much to expand on it. Coincidentally, I read another John Henry-inspired story recently, but that one had a subplot of character drama and some good worldbuilding on top of the basic plot. I feel like this story would have been much better if it had just had something else going for it to make it stand out.
