Coming clean

Fluttershy stared into the mirror in the bathroom and sighed to herself. Was she about to come out and tell her friends about her secret? Also, would her friends still accept her for who she is? She sighed again, knowing well that she couldn’t keep her secret anymore. She took a deep breath and walked outside to see her friends sitting on Fluttershy’s couch all having a pleasant conversation with each other. After a few minutes of talking, Rarity looked up and saw Fluttershy standing in the doorway.

“There you are Fluttershy! How are you doing?”

“I’m fine Rarity. Can I ask you guys a question?”

“You can ask us anything Fluttershy!” Twilight responded with a grin.

“What do you guys think of ponies that are….. Transgenders?”

“Well, darling, I fully support ponies that switch genders. I think that it’s a wonderful thing to do!” Rarity said.

“I agree with Rarity, I do support transgenders, but I wouldn’t date one though.” Rainbow Dash said

Ponyfeathers, Fluttershy thought. She had wanted to ask Rainbow on a date for a while now, but now she couldn’t since Rainbow wasn’t interested in transgenders.

“Well, considering that my brother was a lady for a short moment of time, I got to say that transgenders are pretty good friends of mine.” Applejack said.

“Oh, I absolutely LOVE transgenders! They’re unique, just like me! ” Pinkie Pie said while bouncing out of her chair.

“I do like transgenders Fluttershy, but why do you want to know this?” Twilight asked, cocking her head back.

“W-Well h-h-here’s the thing…” Fluttershy managed to say. “I’m not actually a woman….”

“You’re not actually a what?” Rainbow Dash asked.

“I’m not a woman.”

“What?” Rainbow Dash asked again.

“I’M NOT A WOMAN!” Fluttershy shouted, making everypony flinch.

“Wait, so you are a transgender then?” Twilight asked.

“Yeah, I guess you can call me that, do you guys have any questions for me?”

“Do you still have the male body parts or did you get that removed?” Rainbow Dash immediately asked.

Fluttershy blushed madly at Rainbow while Twilight glared at Rainbow.

“Rainbow Dash!” Twilight said, hitting her upside the head with a book,” I’m pretty sure Fluttershy wouldn’t want to answer a question like that!”

“Oh, it’s OK Twilight. It’s perfectly normal for a pony to ask a question like that. And to answer your question, Rainbow Dash I still have the parts a male would have, I don’t like getting surgery for something like this.”

“Yeah Twilight, it’s perfectly normal to ask a question like that and you didn’t have to hit me in the head with a book!” Rainbow Dash said while rubbing her head.

The room remained silent for a few minutes until Applejack raised a hoof at Fluttershy.

“What was your male name before you switched genders? Also, how old were you when you found out that you were a woman?” Applejack asked.

“My actual name was Butterscotch and I was around 19 or 20, just a year before all six of us met for the first time. It was originally an experiment at first, but it kind of just, I don’t know stuck with me I guess.”

Rarity raised a hoof at Fluttershy.

“Have you ever faced anypony who have said anything offensive to you?” Rarity asked.

Fluttershy stayed silent for a few seconds before responding. “Well… There were a few ponies who threw trash at me and calling me a bucking weird, but otherwise, everypony doesn’t mind.”

Everypony gasped at Fluttershy’s response.

“Oh, darling that’s horrible!” Rarity said. “Who did that to you?”

“Nopony I know Rarity, I never saw them again,” Fluttershy said.

The room remained silent for a minute before Twilight raised a hoof.

“Fluttershy, do your parents know that you’re a transgender?” Twilight asked, with a look of concern on her face.

Fluttershy paused and thought for a moment.

“Yes they do know that I’m a transgender, and they support me for who I am. I was very nervous to tell them that though.”

Twilight sighed. At least her best friend wasn’t ridiculed by her parents, that must be the worst feeling to happen to somepony.

“Do you know any other transgenders in Ponyville?” Pinkie asked.

Fluttershy grinned, ”Yeah there were several transgenders hanging around Ponyville, and I found out that Princess Luna is a transgender too.” Fluttershy said with a smirk on her face.

Everypony gasped again at Fluttershy, their eyes widening.

“H-how did you know that?! I didn’t even know that!” Twilight said with a look of amazement on her face.

“She came to me asking advice to come out to her family over tea. I’m pretty sure that her family accepted her for who she is.” Fluttershy said with a smile. “So in conclusion I am a transgender and I will stay a transgender for the rest of my life, and to those who don’t like transgenders can ignore us instead of criticizing us. You guys would help transgenders if they’re harassing us right?”

“Of course Fluttershy!” Twilight said. “If they harass you let us know and we will go to Tartarus and back to hunt them down and get the justice you deserve!”

“Oh thank you guys so much for your support! I’m just glad you’re not mad or disgusted at me.”

“ Fluttershy darling! Why on earth would we be disgusted from you?” Rarity said with a shocked look on her face.

Fluttershy paused for a second. “I don’t know why I thought that you guys would hate me, you guys are my best friends! I know that you would never criticize me for who I am but I guess I was nervous that I would lose my best friends due to something so little. Though the worst part about it is I was going to ask out Rainbow on a date but since she said that she wouldn’t date a transgender.” Fluttershy looked down, tears beginning to fall down her face.

“Well I guess I could give a transgender a chance on a date, and who knows? Maybe they’ll be my dating type.” Rainbow Dash said while hugging Fluttershy causing her to blush.

“Oh you girls are just the best!” Fluttershy said, hugging all of her friends.

So. On the nature of the story, this is... honestly, not a story. I get that you're trying to express your thoughts on a social (or personal?) issue through the medium of ponies, and that's perfectly fine, but the simple fact is this is a scene that happens, and there is no... emphasis. Fluttershy is slightly nervous. And then, she is not. We don't see her struggle with this issue at all, we barely get a hint there would be reason to struggle... this is really a list of "Hey, I have a question, what about so and so?" "Oh, well here is the answer to that question," and no connection. You could swap out the character names at random, with any medium, and you'd have the same thing--heck, you could pull this from a 'primer on transgenderism' and it would be mostly the same.

I was actually expecting Fluttershy to reveal she's trans-tribal, believing herself more earth pony then pegasus...

All and all, this is a coming out with no conflict dressed up in ponies. Again, if this is an issue for you, I applaud your bravery and hope you have as good a result in real life, but as a story... this falls flat.

My problem is with transformation spells is genetic gender and gender identity being different really an issue in Equestrian? There would be no need for surgery and genetic gender could be changed so transponies would be fully functional as their new gender. Heck while it would be shady, their birth gender could be kept secret successfully. In such and environment transgenderisum would be treated much differently than it is among humans. Yes you aim is clear to state you views on transgendersum among humans though ponies, but I don't feel that explores the idea in a unique way that a fictional species offers. If you treat them as humans with the same problems and views as humans, why not use humans? Set it in the Equestrian girls universe where magical gender reassignment is not possible.

Um.... wow... just ah shit. Way too fast and the responses of the main six feel.... forced. Like, I think most of us here have no problems with transgender people, but this just isn't accurate to their struggle
