Jason stared at Twilight. “You can’t be serious. You could actually turn me into a pony?”
“Yes,” Twilight said slowly. "It's not too complicated, but it would require a significant amount of energy."
“But what about my job? I can’t fix things for ponies if I’m a pony, right? How would I support myself and Nightshine if I can’t make any money?”
“Those are all good points, though I’m sure we could find you something around town. On the other hoof, I can just as easily turn you back into a human after a few days, a week, a month; however long you want."
Nightshine’s ears perked up at that. As a smile formed on her face, she licked her lips, then bit her bottom lip as she poked him with a hoof. Jason looked down at her with a lifted eyebrow, staying silent. “Um... I can think of one,” Nightshine squeaked out with a light blush, her ears laying flat on her head. She glanced away as her rump wiggled in excitement.
He smiled down at her and scratched her between her wings. “Oh? And what might that be, little one?”
Nightshine glanced at Twilight for a second, then looked back up into Jason’s eyes. “Winghugs!” she said, pushing herself up off of his chest. Her tail swished back and forth behind her. “Back at the orphanage, I always had dreams of sleeping under the wings of my future parents. Every time I woke up, though... there was nobody there,” she said, her smile faltering a little bit. “But then you adopted me! I never thought someone like you would adopt me, so...” she trailed off as her smile returned in full force.
“So you’d like for me to become a thestral so that we could snuggle some more? But we already snuggle a ton, sweetie,” Jason said with a chuckle.
“Yeah, but I just know winghugs would be so much better! ” Nightshine hopped from side to side, her wings spread wide. “Snuggling with you is still awesome, though. Doesn’t it feel great when I wrap my wings around you? And... Oh! I just thought of another reason!”
“Do tell,” Twilight said with a small smile and a fluff of her wings.
“You and I can learn how to fly together!” Nightshine said, her voice filled with utter glee. “Just imagine us flying! Wouldn’t that be really awesome?”
“Huh... yeah, that would be pretty cool,” Jason said. He scratched his chin, then closed his eyes for a few seconds as he imagined soaring through the clouds with Nightshine right beside him. “Say, Twilight?” he asked, looking at her. “Can thestrals stand on clouds?”
“Yeah, they can.”
“Can I... have some time to think it over? This isn’t a decision I can make on the spot,” Jason said as he leaned against the door, pushing his hands into his pockets.
“Of course.” Twilight nodded once and used her magic to place Spike on her back. “I’ll be at my castle, okay? I’m going to do some research on how to actually do this; it's going to take me some time to figure it all out, after all.” She walked a few steps away, then looked over her shoulder and asked, “Can you come by when you make up your mind? I’m sure I’ll have something figured out by then; I just need to reread my books about transformation spells.”
“Yeah, sure...” Jason said, standing back up. “See you then.” Once the door was closed, he groaned and shook his head. “I... need some time to think about this.” He collapsed upon the couch and spread his arms wide on the tops of the cushions.
“Um... okay,” Nightshine said, her ears once again falling flat on her head. “Do you need some more convincing?” she gently asked.
“Heh, thanks, but I think I’m okay. I just want a few minutes to think. That's all.”
Well, he didn’t say no... yet. All was dead silent. The sounds of the market faded away as Nightshine felt her heart sink a bit into her stomach. With a sigh, she slowly clambered back up on the couch and curled up into a ball right beside him, holding her tail between her forelegs. What if he says no? She clenched her eyes shut as she wiggled against him, pushing herself against his leg for warmth.
She felt Jason wrap his arm around her, holding her tight against his leg for a brief moment before pulling her onto his chest. She wrapped her forelegs around his neck and wrapped her wings around him, right under his armpits. He held her close as she nuzzled his neck.
Nightshine only held on to him tighter as she felt his grip loosen on her. She wrapped her forelegs around his lower arm and held onto it tightly. “So...”
“Yeah?”
“Did you make up your mind?” Nightshine asked softly. “I know it’s only been a couple of minutes since Twilight left, but...”
“Nightshine, when I adopted you, I made a commitment to better your life, and I am not going to give up on you because of an unexpected twist. While this wasn’t something that I expected, I guess I’m sorta looking forward to seeing what it’d be like being a pony. It can’t be that hard walking on four legs, right?”
“Nope! It’s super easy!” Nightshine said with a small giggle. “I’ve done it all my life, after all, so if I can do it, you can do it!”
“Yeah, I guess. I think it’d be fun to see how it’d work out for me,” Jason said softly. He took in a deep breath to finally speak the words that he knew Nightshine would love to hear, but before he could say it, Nightshine leapt from his arms.
“You mean it?” Nightshine stared at Jason with wide eyes, her rear end wiggling back and forth as she let her forelegs bend. She opened her wings and threw on a huge smile that made her fangs become exposed.
“So yeah, let’s give it a shot for a week I guess. I—oomph!” Nightshine tackled him, wrapping her legs around him as she nuzzled him over and over. “Heh, so I guess you’re pretty happy about this, huh?”
Standing before Twilight in her castle’s library, Jason looked down at Nightshine and saw her beaming up at him. He tousled her mane, making her hum happily in content as she nuzzled his leg. Looking up at Twilight, he asked, “So, uh... this isn’t going to hurt, is it?”
“I don’t think so; my books never said anything about this being painful,” Twilight said as she reread the spell one more time. “Are you ready? I’m actually curious to see what you’d look like as a pony.”
“Yeah, I guess I’m ready.” Jason stretched, then wiggled his fingers and toes. “See you later, my little wiggly appendages,” he said, followed with a brief chuckle. “Okay yeah, let’s do this. I’m good to go.” He felt his heart rate increase as Twilight’s horn started to glow, then a stark realization hit him. “Woah, hold up. What about my clothes? Am I going to be naked?”
“Uh... if you define naked by not wearing any clothes, then yes, you’ll be naked. You’ll have a nice coat like the rest of us ponies, though, and we don’t typically wear clothes all the time.” Twilight let her horn’s light fade away. “If you’re having second thoughts or want to spend more time thinking about this, I am perfectly happy to have you come by another time.”
“Nah, it’s okay,” Jason said, looking down at Nightshine with a small smile. No clothes? That’s gonna take some getting used to!
“Nightshine, you need to step away for this to work,” Twilight said, waving her over with a hoof. “We wouldn’t want you to get caught up in the spell, right?”
“I guess not.” Nightshine nuzzled Jason’s leg, then whispered, “Good luck, Daddy.”
“Thanks, sweetie.” Jason stretched his arms, then wiggled his fingers again. “Heh, gonna miss these.”
“Okay, here we go!” Twilight lit her horn and lowered her head, pointing her horn directly at Jason’s chest.
A bright purple light surrounded Jason as he rose into the air. His entire body went numb, then all went black. The last thing he saw before he passed out was Nightshine’s worried face as he fell to the floor in a heap.
Oh boy, here's hoping there won't be any nasty side effects from a complete species change...
......well, at least it's not permanent.
Wow so many feels and an awsome chapter
Ya know... that's kind of messed up. It makes me feel as though the ponies have structured their society around xenophobia. It's as though they refuse to allow for anything other than a pony to be worthy enough to raise a foal.
I might be taking the story the wrong way, but I really don't find anything at all fine with someone having to give up the body they were born with (even for a short time) just so they can have the privilege and responsibility of raising a child. There's just something fascist about the whole thing that rubs me the wrong way.
I apologize if I'm missing something, but pony society in this story is fucked up six ways to Tuesday.
(and I am not attacking the story or its author, just commenting on the events that are occurring in the story)
This is just... I understand that he'd accept anything to keep his daughter, but honestly, I thought this was just going to be a cute story with a batpony filly being raised by a Human through and through. This ain't what I signed up for, man!
Thus, the end has arrived. Still waiting for the next chapter.
Kidding aside, I prefer to read things without audience intervention, but that's kinda unrealistic, isn't it?
I'm sad you have told us this is no longer fun to write. I guess I will put critique in spoilers (kinda silly thing to do), if you don't want to read it. I do enjoy this story, if that's something sensible to say:
The thing is that the ring thingy is something akin plot convenience, or rather other kind of convenience. But hey, it can be used to create interesting circumstances.
For me, this chapter was too fast. I'm inclined to believe that at some point you were tempted to say '**** this chapter'. I can say the characters are more much much more relatable than the circumstances (I honestly don't like them still, see 7799389 ). Love the cutesy moments, though.
The final scene was, er,
lackluster(nope that's a silly word). Not sure, a lot of dialogue, very straightforward dialogue, more explaining that showing, but it is understandable.Aah, take everything with a grain of salt (
dem horses do that!, no wait they use a salt block, bah its the same) and do try to have fun.Dumb spoiler thingy only working before a line break... AND THEY DO NOT HIDE CITATIONS
And this is where I get off. I came here looking to scratch a very specific human-pony itch, and the author decided that wasn't what they wanted to do anymore. It's still a good story, but it's not up my particular alley.
Nice to see more of Jason and Nightshine, life can always a bit more of cuteness
Wow, the Ponys really do love to blown their own horns, sure i understand the political reasons as to why he can't adopt due to him being another species, but they all do seem a tad bit to happy trying to convince him to change hjs species.
"Be a Pony!"
"Sure, you might miss your old form for awhile, but we ponys are just so awsome and can do so many things you will forget all about it after awhile!"
"All will be better once you are a pony, so just change already!"
That's pretty much the message they are trying to get across in my opinion.
I'm really confused by this 'solution' to him adopting a bat pony. Why does turning him into a bat pony solve the legal issue of him not being a native born equestrian?
Well that was unexpected but not unwanted
I like this chapter. It's very good. I for one, would not become a pony, if given the choice. I'm proud to be a human. Heck, even if I had no choice, I'd find a way to go back to being the apex predator species.
Not sure which was the bigger shock: the end of this chapter, or this section of a Wikipedia article that I just read.
I wonder what jason would look like as a thestral, would be really nice if some really nice artists could make some cool artwork. *hint hint*
I am one with the force the force is with me
Ah well, Im outta here.
Well, at least he'll still be human, and can transform between one form or the other.
Anyway, this is Abyss' story. I hope the author continues
Not one hundred percent clear on what this means
Screw the haters! You do you Abyss!
What does a father do?
He sacrifices.
Mothers have a natural nurturing link with their babies that runs deep as the soul.
Fathers, though potentially loving, caring parents, have no such link.
We are outsiders.
We love our children but we cannot truly fathom what it is like to carry life and bring into this world. That link of flesh and blood.
So what can a father do?
He sacrifices.
A bit of his freedom.
A lot of his time.
And sometimes more.
Rant over, but this goes to show how Jason Is truly a good father for his willingness to insure the happiness of his daughter.
Please write more soon!
Must have more!
Now the question becomes how will Jason adapt to the changes that he has under gone? Hopefully Twilight gets off her butt here and starts trying to fix these vastly outdated laws so this could not happen again! Still let's get back to some father/daughter bonding!
Wait...couldn't they have made Nightshine human?
Ponies can wear clothes too.
Looks pretty good, so to the read later list it goes. Way behind on the show and don't want spoilers
Two cliffhangers from two of my favorite authors in one week? What'd I do wrong????
Awesome chapter, Abyss! Went a little fast, but that's probably on me. I was so excited to read what happened!
Sweet! You didn't give into the hate and did your original idea! Good job Abyss! The compromise from before would've made this way too complicated. I can't understand why people would get worked up over this. I mean, it's already an HiE, adoption, and batpony fic wrapped in one, or basically a story that already is stuffed to the brim with fimfic cliches. Why not make it complete with the special-change cliche so that they all become one unique piece of a cliche that's still enjoyable? Even if the legality stuff that brought this conflict up is a little odd, I think the whole "turn into a pony" schtick is cool, and will provide so many cute moments between Jason and Nightshine. Keep up the good work, and here's to reclaiming the joy of working on this piece of work!
If this turns out okay this might be the best story I've read on this site.
welcome the a world ware you taste everything you grab
proud of you, sticking to the original decision.
Waiting for the learning the fly together moments.....or maybe crashing moments. ;) Glad you stuck to your guns Abyss. Nice chapter.....damn cliffhangers. LOL
7799519 please do
Nice.
You are so awesom this is so good and Cute.
Yay winghugs is best hugs!
7799443 <-- This
A successful outcome of this spell in this scenario still won't fix the problem Twilight has presented with the adoption. Jason still can't be a 'natural born' citizen of Equestria, even with a transformation.
I would also argue that if Nightshine has somehow 'slipped' through the system and was actually allowed to be adopted at all, would that not void the law? Or at least throw it into a political and/or legal grey area?
Well ... I am also one of the persons that came here to see how Jason will handle the upcoming problems with the adoption of Nightshine.
And now that plot-twist!!
I also have to say that it was the author's choise to write the story that way and I am accepting it. I am also not gonna kick out this story out of my favs, no, I'm staying here for more because I still think this is an awesome story!!!
So Abyss: Keep your good work up, mate!! It is your story and you can do with it whatever you please. And don't let get the haters the better of you. I hope we see more from you soon.
Cheers!

havnt commented before.. but i know i need to do so more so. im loving the story and however you decide to take it i will continue to enjoy and follow along for the ride
Still as enjoyable as the last chapter.

Good job this is one of the best fics ive read on fimficiton. Please keep writing.
Yaya new chapter.
And the author sticks to his guns, good on you!
Honestly I would have been fine either way you went, so I don't get all the hubbub about this transformation choice. More cliche things have worked fine with the right writers.
I'm sure winghugs must have been the deciding factor here.
If there should ever be a Marefriend for him, then I hope it is slowly introduced, and it is one with a personality similar to
Mrs. Cake, Fluttershy,....Coco... someone polite, that still knows what she wants but who isn't going to bribe him with her good looks or something.
I just think someone nice for him would be the best, or Mrs. Harshwinny just because I think it would be funny.
Not sure how to say it, but I remember one or two storys where the main Char (again) was pretty akward in the relationship and his Marefriend got on one hand pretty miffed with him all the while. I think I don't want anyone to manipulate him (Rarity is often one like that).
I say either another bat Mare with a good heart, or someone like Carrot Top or Mrs. Harswinny since I rarely see a two pony relationship with Carrot.
I'm only talking about it, because I suddenly thought his new appearance would maybe make him suddenly more interessting to one or two Mares, or a traveling Bat Mare.
I really enjoyed your story but I didn't come to read a 1/2 pony 1/2 human adoption fic, that's not what I came here for and that isn't what was advertised. I wish you luck on the rest of this story and I am happy for anyone who finds joy and entertainment where I find none.
Hmm, why can I see twilight casually mentioning afterwards that little fillys need proper mothers in their lives, and she happens to be availible?
You tease...
I love this story, it's is probably my favorite I honestly check everyday in my favorites to see if it was updated or not. So I must say from the bottom of my heart, thankyou no matter how bad of a day I had, when I read this story it brightens my day, and I just want to say I support you 100% keep up the good work!
7799540 I'm not hating on the story at all. I just question why the society is the way it is.
So that happened. Entirely within your rights to take your story in that direction and entirely within my right to change my like to a dislike when you change the direction to one I dislike.
