So here's my first attempt at a story. Not ever, but this one I'm trying to finish.
I'm writing this in a style that I think would go well with the show. Because while I can appreciate some of the wacky fanfic that's been written, I'm a fan of the show for what it is, not for what I wish it was. The only change I could possibly want is that the show be smarter (not edgier or something like that) and more self-consistent; which it is to a greater degree than most, but not the degree that can be achieved when you only have one writer.
The mystery mare is Twilight. But Cadance would know who she is already.

And no, no she doesn't. Not the way I've planned it out.
This is a story mostly about Cadance that makes her OK in my own headdom. Twilight is involved, of course.
The key to remember is that we call baby-sitters anyone taking care of a baby to a teenager. The rest will be revealed in chapter three.
Twilight had Cadance as a baby sitter before she had her mark. She cared about that filly even before she knew how special she was, and babysat not because she had to take care of Celestia's student, but because she was nice. Cadance knowing Twilight before this does much more justice to her character.
So, would it really be too much to add a line saying she remembered the filly?

Hmm, I probably should have gotten chapter three done before submitting. I figure it will make or break the story. Hopefully you'll be OK with what I have planned.
While I don't mind for things to go slightly against cannon as long as it is good, I would prefer it follows cannon though, but something small like Cadence foal sitting Twilight after she got her cutie mark I could easily overlook. Though to say she only was Twilight's foal sitter once before she got her mark and continued afterwards wouldn't go against cannon.

I'm trying for an explanation that doesn't require that Twilight have a previous relationship with Canterlot nobility. Her getting to where she got by sheer ability is more easily relatable to me. But I'm not looking to break cannon. The only clue I'll give is that the way that MMMM* is thought of by Cadance is actually an important part of the explanation.

Well Twilight did become Celestia's student for being the most powerful unicorn she ever seen, and possibly for almost causing Fallout Equestria.
Let me take a guess on how Cadence could possibly know Twilight, foal sitting for a school charity event/extra credit.
I am not 100% happy with this chapter, but I had promised it by Thursday, so I rather post it now and go back to it later when I've had a chance to clear out the chapter in my head. That should let me fix up any stilted passages.
Anyway, it seems the chapter ran long. I'm trying to stick to between 1000 and 1500 words per chapter. I know they're smallish updates, and I know how annoying it can be when getting dribs and drabs like this, but it does let me update more often.
Anyway anyway, I'm looking for feedback. And yes, this point in time is after Twilight earned her cutie mark.
It may be that somepony decided that it would be easier for Twilight to lay low for a while, and adult pony society has a blind/soft spot for blank-flanks.

It's grown on me. Truthfully, the long hiatus was completely unplanned. Just a serious case of writer's block induced by spoilerific Season 3 information.
Still, I'm now over 800 words into the next chapter, and it looks like the story now wants to come out, so I think there should be a next chapter soonish.
