Equestria is dead. Using massive weapons of utter destruction, the Caribou have killed all but a handful of ponies, including Princess Twilight. But leaving the Princess of Magic alive was folly. After all, love conquers all. Even death.

That was pretty awesome, and vinyl is a vamp I asume?
Purity is going to do something stupid I just know it.
I know it's a bit extreme, but, they could just kill Purity and then revive her. Then she'd be one of them, that'd change her tune.
4922569 That would just make Twilight into some evil necromancer then. From what I gather, Love Necromancy requires love towards the pony you are reviving, and I don't see Twilight loving Purity any time soon...
...story is not bad overall but the foundation is rather shaky. just can't buy a lot of what lead to this situation.
4922650 I know I know, it was just something that popped into my head. Although, angry as she is with Purity, it is implied that Twilight has an innate love for all ponies, so she could in theory still revive Purity. It would however still be immoral and make Twilight an evil dictator if she condoned it, so yeah it wouldn't work.
4922756 That is a good point. I can see that it is implied she loves all her little ponies, but have you ever thought that she might have already lost her soul? I mean, just look to Dinky. She was all sweet and frightened to Twilight at first, but then she is suddenly a killer. Could Twilight have poisoned the CMCs hearts with her lust for revenge? Who knows but the author.
Purity. Just shut up.
I kinda of like the direction that Twilight is taking here. With no Princess Celestia or Luna, and no Equestria like it used to be, there is no longer a need for the Senate (even though its gone already) or any constitutional articles acting against the Princesses. Just as Twilight said herself, she is essentially an Empress until this whole mess is sorted out. However, I would really like to see (if it's possible), both Twilight and Trixie ruling Equestria's armies and leading them into battle.
Awesome chapter, even if it was short, and I look forward to the next chapter.
~ Super-Brony12
This story is going surprisingly quick. I still love it. But it's still going quick.
Which isn't a bad thing honestly.
I'm really enjoying it. Though I think I need to reread it, just to be sure I understand everything.
And we are once again reminded that the Caribou are total sickos. Let's hope Trixie doesn't become so consumed by vengeance that she becomes worse than the Caribou she opposes, like alexwarlorn's Nightmare Paradox. Vinyl and Octavia are nobles (and married, good for them)? I hope this doesn't blow up in Twilight's face.
4922479 I think we all agree with that. She's one of those Canterlot snobs who doesn't see the good in anything that doesn't go by the old ways and rules. So bravo for Twi, AJ and Dash putting her in her place like they did! I think that this is my favorite chapter yet!
Also, our author said this is short for reasons. Not sure what they are, but I think that we trust her to continue on with this lovely, wild ride soon enough.
Me, I'm just glad to see AJ and the other girls back in action again! Something tells me that those lousy Caribou are really in for it now!
And Applejack has a new Stetson. Well done. I hated to see her father's go like that, but I guess that it was beyond salvaging.
Anyway, all that said, can't wait for the next chapter! Should be mega-good!
heh, if this were the Human World, the Caribou Nation would be in EXTREMELY DEEP shit with the United Nations, since EVERYTHING they've done against Equestria are considered to be Crimes against Humanity.
4922850 I don't know what the author is planning, but it seems they are planning to have events cover a long span so the quickened pace seems to work out. As long as it stays this consistent, I don't have too much trouble with it.
Although I would like to see more interaction between Twilight, her friends, and some of the resurrected. A chapter here and there of slice of life puts the mood into the story for me at least.
I have to say that I'm glad that in this story you've stripped some of the more horrible/dumb parts of the Fall universe. Like Shining betraying all that he knws and loves for pathetic reasons, and the transformation of the Crystal Heart to the Crystal Dick (Seriously!?) and all the mind rape of the male gender that it causes.
UY, now I know it, Twilight will make an Empire, and Trixie a Republic (because of the elemnt of freedom), and depending how they take things, there would be a civil war, or they talk it out, Trixie would take the Crystal Empire and some land for her Republic, Twilight would take Canterlot and some other land for her Empire, of course all this after destroying the Caribou together.
4923202 This is true I'd love to see some interaction. See just how far that "coldness" goes that was mentioned in the chapter.
Otherwise this is an awesome story.
Seeing Vinyl and Octavia becoming big characters is good. I'd like to see where it goes from there (but wow, Vinyl being nobility? I haven't read that before. I like it).
Still though, more actions that could be interpreted badly against Twilight. Dissolving the democracy, returning the Empire and assuming the title of Empress, and giving more to the nobility like that... Obviously, these are all important steps; with Equestria in ruins and the survivors scattered, any democracy they could create would be both unfeasible and couldn't properly represent the ponies of the nation. The greater power afforded to emperors as compared to princesses are also necessary in the absence of a developed government that could be relied upon to take many of the burdens of rule, and that same lack of government, bureaucracy, and infrastructure means that setting up a normal system of governors and elected officials would be almost impossible. The power given to the aristocracy allows her to delegate the duties of leadership in the lack of a functioning government.
The Equestrian Empire thing is much like a jury-rig to get Equestria functional again. When the war is over and the nation has a living population again, they can begin to recreate the utopia they have lived in. Empresses can be set aside for princesses, and the everyday pony can take a role in governing his/her/its nation once again. But that's only if Equestria survives to reach the point it can patch itself up.
Still, her decisions could be used against and held against her very easily. Particularly seeing that she didn't make acknowledgement to Celestia or Luna as co-empresses (does she even know if they are still alive?), although if she's bringing back the Equestrian Empire then that is sort of a given--I'm guessing that Luna and Celestia were still diarchs back then, so she shouldn't actually need to. But that could still be viewed badly by others (not mentioning that unlife is only a temporary measure might contribute to this... although considering when we joined the conversation, Purity's outburst could be over the idea of return the not-zombies to full life. Resurrecting the dead can be viewed in a lot of different lights). Also, I'm a bit worried about the inclusion of "mad" when describing her anger. It really didn't seem to be used as the synonym for anger in context... just how mentally stable is Twilight, anyways?
Purity breaking through Sweetie Belle and Rarity's muffle, especially considering that Sweetie Belle at least was buffed up with love necromancy (and Rarity isn't exactly shabby when it comes to magic, either), is actually quite impressive. Incidentally, do those animated by love necromancy receive the same benefits as the CMC and Dinky did? If they do, does it involve changing their bodies like it did for the living? Basically, I want to know if I should be envisioning Rainbow Dash with bat wings or not.
I do wonder about Twilight's mention of changing boundaries. I could see her reducing its size, as it is easier to defend a small area from attack than a big one, but that would pose problems when the ponies return to the living. And annexing territory... well, aside from the moral issues regarding attacking the non-Caribou, Equestria doesn't really have the ponypower yet to try to extend their war in another direction. Speaking of the Caribou... Ponyville was very clearly a military camp, but what happens when the ponies make their way into a normal Caribou settlement? Even if the Caribou have mandatory military service or their entire culture shares in the brutality shown by their government and armies, the question of what happens to the Caribou children comes up. I'd like to think that they'd be unharmed, but considering what so many of the once-dead experienced at Caribou hooves and the devastation brought to their nation as a whole... I'm not entirely sure that the drive for revenge wouldn't override morality.
Also, we've only really seen the ponies so far--has she also been bringing back the cows, donkeys, etc.? There's no reason to think she wouldn't, but it wasn't mentioned so I was a bit curious. Also... well, Twilight's parents lived in Canterlot. We didn't see a scene with them, so did they die earlier in the war, make it to the Crystal Empire, or are they still alive and in hiding... or, in the hooves of the Caribou?
4922768 Although possible, Dinky and the CMC's reaction to their families suggest otherwise. Aside from which, we don't actually get to see much of what Dinky was like before being buffed with love magic. Frankly, Dinky was most likely a killer for a long time before she freed Twilight, by sheer necessity. And if she and the CMC have been working together for the past years, which it very much looks like they have, then she has almost certainly killed before. But now, she has the power to really fight, not just survive a scuffle against a group of Caribou small enough to hold off. Rather than getting corrupted, it looks much more like putting a gun in the hands of someone who up until that point had been trying to fight a war with a knife (but this person actually knows how to use a gun, andwho isn't going to get herself stupidly killed by incompetence or by tossing aside the carefulness that kept her alive now that she has a better weapon.). And she hasn't stopped being nice or sweet--there was her moment of doubt before she came across Ditzy and Sparkler's bodies (said doubt likely the reason for her earlier fear, which that section pointed out wasn't exactly gone), although actually experiencing love necromancy wiped that away.
If I were to guess, this and a number of other things happening in the story so far are to make Twilight's actions look like something to give a good character, who would otherwise be her ally, reasonable cause to fight against her. It just feels like that's where this is leading to, to me.
Good chapter I eagerly await the next chapters arrival. :)
4923623 I like the land splitting idea. The last think they need is another war within a war.
Don't you dare say it, anyone! You know what I'm talking about.

I'll just make this one brief. ^___^
You are completely correct on how you're looking on the government of the ponies. ^___^ Twilight recreated the Empire out of necessity. It's rather hard to hold votes when most of the country is under occupation, after all. She actually doesn't know if Celestia and Luna are alive, either, and is going on the assumption that they're dead, or somewhere she can't reach for awhile. (Which is true.)
And I'm going to be make a few "intro" chapters for character groups, who are going to become side stories in this setting. Vinyl and Octavia are one. And I gave a small hint on who the others might be. (Hint: Two-tone, creamy mare.)
4924750 But but You set it up perfectly!
Any who, this stories starting to become quite interesting. I can't wait to see where it goes from here. I mean Octy! Vinyl! Trixie! everyones a star lol
4925753
I'm curious about Twilight's apparent lack of knowledge towards Trixie.
With Twilight's credentials( Alicorn of Magic, Creator of Love Necromancy, constant magi-vision) and Trixie's actions (forced self ascension via massed soul consumption, which is an act necrourgy if there ever was one) it seems a little odd for her to be unaware that "something" has gone down.
Of course this could very easily be explained with Trixie being outside of Twilight's range of perception or that the often ascribed magic-sensitivity over distances isn't in effect here (outside of the aforementioned magi-vision). Although in the case of the first one I'd cite president of "It's as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced".
I do understand that you have plot reasons for this separation of groups, but you've gone and got this stuck in my head. So please, tell me your secrets. [waggles eyebrows]

When we first transitioned back to Equestria, it says that about 1,000 living ponies escaped to the Canterlotian Mountains. Then Rainbow Dash said that all that was left of Equestria was several thousand zombies, and 200 of the living. So which is it?
(I would accept "Dash has no idea what she's talking about" as an answer).
Also, you mention that these hidden refugees are mostly Earth and unicorn ponies. Did the majority of Pegasi civilians flee the country. Or find somewhere else to hide, thanks to their innate flight? I've seen a few dystopia settings where the Pegasi hop into their floating cities and GTFO.
I'm also a bit confused as to why Twilight is stopping to hand out fiefdoms to her zombies and establishing government. At first they seemed to be an unstoppable army of nightmarish death; why are they taking a break to do some lobbying? I can't comprehend why Twilight and her army aren't blitzing the caribou homeland right now. If they stop now, it's only giving the caribou time to figure out what's going on, and find out a way to prepare, run away, or strike at the ponies who are still alive.

For the first one, Dash is just angry and spouting words, of some kind.
For the second, allllll will be revealed!
And for the third, remember, these are thinking, feeling undead ponies, and also living ponies who are vulnerable to the Caribou... and hunger. Trust me, Empress Twilight Sparkle would love nothing more than to sprinkle the ground with Caribou blood, but she has to take care of the still living ponies, and be sure Equestria is under her full control before taking the fight to the Caribou Nation.
Empress Twilight Sparkle, this is only getting better, but i can see so many conflicts ahead.
Very nice read. I do hope Twi has the sense to quell any rebellions that may rise from those nobles.
She's like Batman and Captain America in one! She's the Dark Avenger!
"Now watch this drive."

Smart move.
4923022 Hell, yeah, they would be!
