Twilight took matters into her own hooves. Years after judgement, Twilight is torn between two worlds. A bright and peaceful Equestria and the world of the Dusklands; dangerous and unforgiving. Just where does her heart belong?
First time seeing/picturing Twil.. I mean Diadem as an Arabic Princess. (also Just google Diadem I can see why she's called Diadem now) Changelings (and a Queen), Two Dragons, Ponies all in a single Den. What's next Minotaur? griffin, griffon, or gryphon? (Three names for the same creature) --- Anyway still waiting on the Break down( Beat down I mean it's looking both ways to me) scene
The one thing I dislike about fanfics is most of the best ones aren't complete when I start reading. wish my phone could load this website 50 years ahead.
While I love this story, I do wish you had not hit each of Twilight's old friends with the Stupid stick. Particularly Applejack and Pinkie Pie. They are more oblivious then they should be.
I don't really get why so much people think AJ got hit with the stupid stick. To me it seems quite within her character to act that way. For her family, or more specifically, biological family are THE most important ponies in one's life, next to one's significant other anyway. She did say so that she didn't learn anything at SSCS-6000 and it pretty much shows here. So to her, Twi–cough sorry, Diadem abandoning her biological family doesn't make any sense to her. In the Den, they are a whole family through the bonds that they share in the community that they all work so hard to survive in this harsh wasteland.
Also her view on changelings is understandable. Honesty does not equal "Truth". So it stands to reason as to why she is so abrasive towards changelings as to her, the honest view of them is from the single source, which is Chrysalis. Who does not represent the truth of the changeling race. It also doesn't help that Equestria has been attacked by Chrysalis' changelings to further solidify her view on them.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this chapter. Seeing Diadem have some remnants of her old personality was a nice touch. It reveals truly what kind of softer side that Diadem has towards her family in the Den. It brings a lot of complexity to her character as being so much more than just simple old Twilight Sparkle. And YESSSS I loved seeing the Mane6 fail at trying to get close to Diadem and I was not disappointed. Astral Mace's conversation with RD was nice and he has a fairly sad backstory, but nothing too special, though I guess that can work to his advantage.
I can't wait for the next chapter and I hope that it comes out soon!
Definitely enjoyed this chapter. I eagerly await Rarity's attempt to speak with Diadem after her epiphany in this chapter. If she can even bring herself to try.
I also hope to see Astral laying a smackdown on RD, because honestly, when has she ever not deserved a hoof to the face before she clues in to the reality of a given situation? And it will be wonderful.
I'm liking the interactions between the Mane 6 and the other residents of the Den. I can see the slow build to the realization of just how badly fucked up everything is in each of them. Fluttershy, unsurprisingly, figured it out right away, and we saw Rarity finally clue in during this chapter. I suspect that we'll learn that Pinkie also actually knows, but in typical Pinkie fashion is trying to pretend that everything is fine and they can all be friends again if she just stays positive and happy. I predict that she'll be the next one to show her understanding of Diadem's situation and we'll see an appropriately flat haired sad out of her.
I'm not sure who'll hold out the longest between Applejack and RD. Rainbow's stubborn and has a tendency to hold onto a worldview in the face of contrary evidence. However, if someone she trusts straight up tells her that she was disloyal to Twilight by not believing her, she would likely catch on. It'll depend on how long it takes for that to happen though. As for Applejack, she's just as stubborn as Rainbo Dash, and even less flexible in certain parts of her worldview. As Bowow pointed out, AJ can't really come to grips with the idea that Diadem would turn her back on her biological family because AJ can't understand that Twilight's family (which includes Celestia and the Mane 6 in her mind) betrayed her. The concept is completely foreign to her because she refuses to accept it. She may be the element of Honesty, and she exemplifies it in her interactions with others, but the one pony we've seen her lie to is herself. She may simply refuse to accept that she hurt and betrayed Twilight, which directly caused her to end up in the wastes and become Diadem.
I'm also really looking forward to finding out more about how everything has gone to hell in Equestria. There's a lot of interesting story there. AJ's comment that Shining Armor is fighting indicates that he broke free of Chrysalis somehow. But how and when? Does Chrysalis rule the Crystal Empire? There was a hint to that effect in a previous chapter. Did Cadence die in the caves beneath Canterlot? How many cities have burned? What has happened to Celestia and Luna? So many questions
All of which I suspect we'll get at least partial answers too..... eventually
TL;DR: I love this story. Can't wait to see the next chapter, NyxiaStarlight! Keep up the awesome work!
Sometimes you need the right words to get the message through to someone like what happened with Fluttershy and Rarity for example. "Being able to see through the illusion with a keen eye, and a wise heart"
In Applejack's case it would be on a different level. What level, I'm not so sure. Same goes for Pinkie sadly. Rainbow on the other hand was probably almost keyed in on why. Heck, the "She arrived a broken mare and we helped her to pick up the pieces" line should have rang bells for her.
Could she imagine if what happened to Twilight happened to her? Would she still say the same things like now? Their current problem would be thinking of: What is best for Equestria as a whole and its safety, not: What happened to Twilight during her years of being banished. Oh wait, I think most of them forgot that detail somehow.
Still, it's nice to see that there's a large diversity in changelings here with Chrysalis being a tyrant with dangerous ambitions among her kind. Why nice some ask? Because it shows that they're just like Amy regular society with some bad apples. Like Flim and Flam. Though they may not be of the same blood as Applejack, they are of the same species.
Hmm... Actually now that I think about it, what is AJ's stance on calling all of ponykind a family instead of just blood ties? AJ still has a big lesson to learn that blood is not the only thing that can make a family.
And here I go rambling like a fool again but yeah, you can imagine how most of us feel with the half5 acting in this chapter.
Each of them got a few pieces to figure out what happened. Now they just need to put them together so they can see just how badly they fucked up. Rarity/Fluttershy's got the most important bit, though.
They do have some weapons to play to rekindle her interest in Equestria, though, if they figure out what they've done wrong and try to take steps to fix it. The continued survival and safety of her parents, who weren't involved in her banishment. What happened to Spike--no, he wasn't all that great either, but he's a freaking child (and in a very real sense, her child). The continued survival of Cadance (if she's still alive). The continued survival of Shining Armor (if she's aware that Changelings have mind-control magic, which she should considering the good relationships with Atynis's hive). The well-being of her other friends in Equestria, the ones unrelated to the wedding.
Atynis might also attempt to set up some sort of diplomatic communication with Equestria (although she might get a different, closer hive to do it), so as to keep their entire species from being painted in Chrysalis's colors. It also looks like Spike broke off from Celestia and is going out in search of Twilight, and I'll be he's faster at it than the girls are.
Any of these could, if not immediately pull her back to Equestria, at least bring it to the forefront of her thoughts.
Like I said in the author's note, my brain derped out on me, causing my lapse. I completely forgot to hit publish, despite it being on the site itself. I have already started Six, and will work on it once I return home from work this evening, so I hope to have it out shortly.
Well, just read all the fanfic that's been released in halfanhour. Seems good, liked and faved. I've got my eyes on you author, this story has potential.
You're first person to actually comment on that! I'm probably going to link it in a blog post, so that it isn't missed. I recieved the permission from the artist since I fell in love with it the moment I saw it.
well this was good. i really enjoyed the cultural understanding the Den has towards others. also AJ's and RD's moments with the stupid stick seem rather in character. good job and please PLEASE update sooner all the stories i follow take forever to do so
Personally I say screw Equestria. Considering the fact they seem to have forgotten that they banished her they also seem to have even forgotten why she was banished in the first place! Y'know, for supposedly attacking the (presumably revealed by now from how they know who Crysalis is and the attacks they mentioned) false princess who she saw though long before anyone else, despite all that they only seem to have even begun looking for her once they needed their precious hero again, not after it was proven that she was right all along.
And now they're getting pissy because she's rightly saying "No. Screw you guys, you betrayed me and banished me to a completely unknown fate and now want me to come back like a good little slave as if the past several years of barely surviving never happened? Nope F that I have a new family and friends who haven't shown a complete disregard for my life, happiness, or future and I'm perfectly happy not risking my life for you ingrates(who I've already saved from death and/or madness twice before you stabbed me in the back."
But anyone should be able to tell Chrysalis from those she impersonates. Her transformations are very well down, but she does not study their personalities, making her easy to detect by a keen eye, and a wise heart.” Rarity opened her mouth, ready to give a haughty reply, when the queen’s words registered. She took offense, but closed her mouth. There was something that she had forgotten about in the past few years that slammed into her at that very moment. Somepony had seen through the disguise. Somepony had tried to save them all. And they ignored her. Fluttershy gave a whimpered cry as she saw Rarity’s mortified expression. It seemed that the unicorn had finally caught up to what Fluttershy had figured out earlier. There was a reason Twilight resented their mere existence, but Fluttershy did not have the courage to open her mouth and tell her friends. Tell them that it was all their fault.
Seriously? You frecking forgot why she was banished in the first place? And from the sounds of it no one had really made the leap except Fluttershy before. Twilight going crazy and attacking the pony later revealed to be an evil imposter intent on feeding on all of them? Bah complete coincidence!
All this aside this is an exceptional story and I genuinely hope you continue.
6180723 I have the continuing, sinking suspicion that Celestia never told them why exactly Twilight disappeared. Or, that they don't remember why, which raises even more unsettling questions.
6181919 I was thinking that to when I realized that none of the mare 5 seems to know anything. Either Celestia forgot or just didn't say anything about the why her ex student is gone. I'm just waiting for the bombshell to drop when either the mare 5 or Celestia or Shining Armor hears that Diadem rejects them. After all there is a saying, 'an eye for an eye' and 'you reap what you sew '.
But even after all this, what's going to happen when Zombra comes for Dia. Great chapter.
Interesting chapter. Interesting part about it all is that the girls can't seem to figure out what they've done wrong not until now. And so far only Fluttershy and now rarity I figured it out the rest are just pissing Diadam off. The question now to ask is how long will it take for them to give up or for Diadam to actually listen to them without being angry. Looking forward to next chapter!
Vengeance can be a good motivator to do (or in this case, not do) something, and Twilight has certainly earned her right to be more than ticked off with her former friends and country, but I don't think it's just pure spite that motivates her.
I mean, she has her own life, new responsibilities and plans for the future - those are things no one should be expected to abandon at the drop of a hat for the benefit of someone else, especially someone (or some thing - Equestria) that you have no business with. Or, put in simpler terms, she has her own life and that isn't her war to fight.
Of course the fact that Equestria (and some individuals specifically) wronged her greatly in the past helps here as well. She was abandoned, discarded and cast out with no concern for her continued safety or well-being, despite all she had done for the country (she is a large reason it still exists in this day), and she suffered greatly as result.
And once she thinks she has finally put that chapter of her life behind her, Equestria rears its head again because it thinks to make use of Twilight again? Because having Twilight back would be useful for them? Not to apologize or make amends (and if there are any to be had, their sincerity can be questioned if they only appear when they want something from Twilight) but because it believes it's all but entitled to Twilight's help and considers it a forgone conclusion that she would give it, considering how the mane 5 have acted?
Yeah, no. Twilight owes Equestria nothing and is under no obligation, moral or otherwise, to put her current life at risk simply because doing so would be convenient for Equestria.
6184225 your right, Equestria owes Twilight everything and Twilight owns Equestria Nothing
...you know now that I think about it, I like to see a story where Twilight just leaves Equestria to die after being betrayed / Banished and not bother with them so long as the evil forces is only interested in Equestria and leaves Twi and her new family/friends/companions alone.
...or just take action after the said force decides to come on her doorsteps and try, keyword, try to screw her over and all hell breaks loose.
I like fluttershy in this fanfic. She was always the caring and peaceful one and mainly because that she realizes it all there fault that Diadam hates them all.
Hippogriffs and gryphons were all mentioned in the story so far, but we shall see just who is involved with what very soon!
This story is taking me over. I have a compulsion to write it even at work. Haha. I am trying to figure one scene's flow first and then I will send it out for editing. Stuff is going down.

The one thing I dislike about fanfics is most of the best ones aren't complete when I start reading. wish my phone could load this website 50 years ahead.
They're going to drive diadem into rage mode!
more please!
Finally!
This story is awesome.
I especially like how you depict the clash of cultures and different background knowledge.
While I love this story, I do wish you had not hit each of Twilight's old friends with the Stupid stick. Particularly Applejack and Pinkie Pie. They are more oblivious then they should be.
*facepalms*
I could tell that AJ and RD will get the 'big gun' first thanks to their behavior.
On the other hand...............
*insert the Halleluja chorus here*
6177578 lol ther was no stupid stick they just fell out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down
also is it weird that when diadem talks to the other girls i sneer at my computer screen
6177644 Nope
just read it all and I love it, but applejack is a real prick in this fiction... I really want her gone
*clicks where the Next button should be*
"Huh? Why isn't it working?"
*clicks some more*
"Oh. Well. That was quicker than I thought. Now to wait for more gloriousness."
...god Twi is gooooood!
6177825 Not Twi, Diadam, get it right
6177909 Sorry *gets kicked out of the country by a pissed off Diadem*
better?
6177644 Celestia, I love that reference...
That was a good damn movie too.

Another lovely chapter, love to see it. Also because this one was delayed does that mean the next will be coming sooner?

Sombra has taken over the Crystal Empire and is waging war. Chapter "Two"
You are still alive!
6178750
That I am.
Like I said in the author's note, my brain derped out on me, causing my lapse. I completely forgot to hit publish, despite it being on the site itself. I have already started Six, and will work on it once I return home from work this evening, so I hope to have it out shortly.

That is the plan.
Well, just read all the fanfic that's been released in halfanhour. Seems good, liked and faved.
I've got my eyes on you author, this story has potential.
6178790
still as amazing as always!
6178632 Ah, right, right. I knew I'd recalled a mention of it.
I saw this had updated and almost died of squeee-overload.
Also, Twiadem's party outfit...
6180147
Haha!
You're first person to actually comment on that! I'm probably going to link it in a blog post, so that it isn't missed. I recieved the permission from the artist since I fell in love with it the moment I saw it.
To me, it just screamed "Diadem".
6180478 It really does suit the feel the Den evokes, too, with its more Eastern vibe.
It is a delight to see this again. It felt like reading the chapter all over again.
Don't beat yourself for forgetting to update. I was going to ask what was up a few weeks ago and forgot myself.
well this was good. i really enjoyed the cultural understanding the Den has towards others.
also AJ's and RD's moments with the stupid stick seem rather in character. good job and please PLEASE update sooner all the stories i follow take forever to do so

Or else Diadem gets out the hurting stick...
6180593
That is exactly what I was going for.
I only have one thing to say about Fluttershy and Rarity being told about Chrysalis' flaw in battle plans.
weknowmemes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/kelso-burn.jpg
6177331
Haha! Hope you slept well!
Where is Spike? Given his fear of Twilight not needing him, would he just turn his back on her?
6181141
There is a reason Spike is not with the mane 5. He will make an appearance soon.
6181149
Just took a peak into the other chapters, but thanks for the quick reply.
And it makes sense that he is in Ponyville, him being a babydragon.
Saw this pop up in my faces box and I was confused for a second before I got all happy and reread the whole story.
All in all I love it primarily because I don't recalled many other stories that did this or did it well if any
Praise the Sun for a new chapter!!!

But seriously, your editing is amazing and this story would have quite a bit if mistakes and a plot of Swiss cheese if not for your keen eye. :)
