Thunderclaw

T
Source

What if My Little Pony took place in a world where laughing at your fears wasn't enough to make them go away? Where friendship that isn't sealed in blood won't get you through the winter? Where your only shot at paradise is death in glorious combat?

And what if, in such a world, it doesn't take an evening to depose Nightmare moon? If night lasts not hours, but weeks, months, years. If a noble quest to save the land turns into an obsessive hunt for vengeance as the cold and the beasts slowly bring down everybody you ever cared about, if every time you take a step forward, another heart that loved you stops beating?

Gather round, sons and daughters of Heimdall. I am about to tell you "What if?"

Absolutely. Amazing. But being your beta reader you already knew my stance.

Good gravy this is a good story so far. I mean even when she is a viking warrior, Pinkie Pie is still the crazy one. :pinkiehappy:

I am kind of surprise you had Fluttershy in this tale, given her dislike over harming animals. :fluttercry:

Still, this storyline is off to a good start and I wish to encourage you to keep up the good work.

19446

There are a lot of ways Fluttershy can be useful. Wait and see!

Wow... most of the humanized stories I've read really don't grab my attention, your's one the other hoof did. You have done a great translation of the ponies into their human selves, without sacrificing who they are. I may have been surprised at seeing Rarity as a smith, but I realized that you still kept her as what she is, a artisan. Pinkie with a battleaxe is scary, though not as much as barbarian princess and glaive wielding Fluttershy. Keep it up man ~Celestia's Paladin, Ex Solis et Lunae, Providentia et Prospera

This is utterly awesome, I cannot wait to see what happens next. Though I kind of hope you pair Spike with Fluttershy (has always been a desire of mine). But that's just me, Hope to see more!

As an avocate lover of Viking culture, I approve of this story.

Think I'll listen to some Amon Amarth while reading this.

WoW, that was truely awsome. I can't wait to see the next chapter. Also, are you going to do the entire first season like this, if not then you should do it.

19528

Thunderclaw mentioned to me a few weeks ago that he's planning something along those lines.

19446

Oh, you have no idea. Just you wait and see.

19499

I'm trying not to make it too 'shippy. It is, at heart, a story of grim adventure. It always ticks me off when stories like that include romantic subplots for no reason whatsoever, but if it enhances the story, anything goes.

19526

Researching Viking culture was one of the most fun parts of doing this. I'm learning a lot of interesting things, and I try to sneak as much of it as I can into the story.

19528
19532

Something like that, yeah. It's essentially going to be a re-imagining of Season 1, but I'm going to mix, match and warp it all around so it fits the story. Some parts are likely going to be either dropped entirely, or twisted beyond recognition. The Ticket Master, for instance, would take some serious re-interpreting to work in this universe.

The Skaldings would be pleased at such an epic tale to add to the sagas

19682 Sorry, didn't mean to request it requires a shipping plot, just cause I always think that Spike has a crush on the wrong mare. Hehe, anyway yeah, I love what your doing and can't wait to see what will happen!

This is pure awesome.

Chapter 2 is live. Constructive critiscism is appreciated, especially if you have something to say about the technical quality of my writing.

This is a very good story so far. Good plot and all that. Perhaps you could venture into the characters mind though, get their opinions or way of thinking. Otherwise it very good. I will check often for updates.

My only complaint is that it's a lot shorter than the first chapter.

My only complaint is that it's a lot shorter than the first chapter.

I concur with Jacky.

26052

Wouldn't be if you knew how long the first one took him. :p

And once again you have done an damn good job at bringing in canon elements into this story and making work. Good job Thunderclaw

Nice update, as it was an interesting take on the origins of Pinkie Pie and Rarity in this tale.

As I can tell that Pinkie's origin must have been one crazy one, if she ended up that strong enough to take on both Applejack and Rainbow Dash in a fight. :pinkiehappy:

I must say that was some twist on the Elements of Harmony in this storyline, as they fit the Viking theme of this story.

Also I can see whom the girls will be meeting up with if they want to find the Elements in this storyline.

Please do keep up the good work upon such a great storyline like this one as I cannot wait to see what happens next. :yay:

I did notice a misspelled word or two and both chapters, but over all this is an incredibly good story.

This really is an alarmingly good story, and I really hope you pick it up again and continue, because I want to hear more. The only things I will point out are that some of the dialogue reads better in a British accent than the voices of the actual characters, which can be a little jarring if you're not prepared for it, and that the description feels a little spoilerish. Other than that, spot on! Keep at it.

As a norwegian I approve this viking story.

I must say, this is an excellent story, well written, very accurate to Norse terminology and exciting. I do hope you plan on continuing this story, I'm sure all of us would be interested to read more

The level of attention to detail here is positively mindblowing. I do have a couple questions, though. This is clearly humanised MLP in a Nordic setting - so how do the Princesses work in relation to the Norse gods? And why would people bother worshipping other gods when they have two (okay, for a thousand years, they only had one) live examples in front of them?

90035

I'm working on the next chapter as of right now. I'm a tad slow, though, as I'm sure you've noticed. As for the dialogue, that's probably because, as a European non-native English speaker, I'm mostly influenced by British English. That, and I just like the sound of it. It's a valid point, though, and I'll try to keep the dialogue more in tune with the original portrayal.

The reason the description is the way it is is because I don't want people to feel like they've been gut-punched when the grimdark kicks in.

123949

Spoiler alert. But consider that there might not be a conflict. I mean, imagine you're a scandinavian iron age farmer, and Thor drops in on you, and demands to stay for a bit. You let him, and you dote on him, because he's frickin' Thor. You don't immedietly stop worshipping Frigg and Odin just because he's there (unless he's being a cunt about it and demands you only pay attention to him, which is arguably a very Thor thing to do). In fact, you may dote on him specifically because you know he might pass a good word on to Frigg, and as a farmer, Frigg's blessing of fertile lands is more important to your daily life than Thor's protection.

And you can't forget that these gods are more like humans than what we now associate with the term. They're superhuman, yes, but a lot their power derives from their knowledge of magic and access to superior tools. They're not even naturally ageless, or particularly hard to kill.

Ha! I knew the great thunderclaw would not abandon us!
now that I know your not dead, I would like to ask a few questions...
1: Are Celestia/Luna considered to be goddesses by the people of this world or simply powerful rulers
2: Dragons of Norse legend are often feared due to their relation to Nidhogg (the great devourer). Would this mean that dragons of this world are a hunted creature? and if so, is spike a special case?
Sorry if you mean to explain this later in the story, they've just been on my mind since I started reading this.
Anyway, great to have you back, looking forward to more great chapters of MLV

Your picture...It scares me. Especially since I know who it is....

Great. Simple great.

So. Much. Glee! Very Well Done, Sahr. Speaking from the point of view of a re-enactor mildly obsessed with the Norse. Keep up the good work!:pinkiehappy:

Nox

...please tell me your going to continue this?

I'm working on it. It's just that I have a lot of other things that demand my attention. Largely school and writing things that aren't fanfiction. A week just isn't as long to me as it used to be.
Oh, and did you know? Rhyming is freaking hard.

BOOM. I DID IT. NEW CHAPTER, BITCHES. BET YOU WEREN'T EXPECTING THAT.

RHYMING IS SO FUCKING HARD.

128632

lol, forgot to reply to this for forever, might as well.

1) Celestia rules as Queen. In old Norse society, it was common for the king to double as head priest, and Celestia is especially well known for her powerful magic, but other than that, she remains very mysterious to the common people. Luna is completely unknown.

2) I don't think it had much to do with guilt by association; dragons where feared because of their great power and crappy attitude. Above all, the tended to be greedy and egocentric, which lead to the classical "kill people, hoard wealth" behaviour. They were generally only hunted for revenge, because they posed a threat to something the hunter cherishes or becausethe hunter wanted something out of their hoard. Also for glory, natch. Spike is often met with fear, but usually gets a free pass because he hangs out with a Völva and is mostly well-behaved.

Wow, this was an unexpected and extremely pleasant surprise. Woo for new chapter.

NEW CHAPTER!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so happy right now.

NEW CHAPTER YES! ....:trixieshiftleft:.....:trixieshiftright:... I HAVE FORGOTTEN ALL THAT I READ BEFORE:twilightblush: now I must reread it.

Yes, hence why I will never ever EVAR have Zecora as a character in anything I write. Ever!

This story is great. I love how you've Norsified the ponies so well. Pinkie Pie as a jiggly happy norse warrior? Yes please! :pinkiehappy:

-It was only when she stood still that the looked worried, and she cringed and whined every time on of the -

And here I thought this tale had gone the way of Baldr... Thank you. Thank you very much! I needed this.

I must say that this was a nice introduction to Zecora in this storyline of yours. You got her rhyming theme down perfectly. :pinkiehappy:

I woke up this morning...
I checked my Email...
and then I saw something I thought I would never see...
"My little viking has updated"...

WOO!

Also, does this mean chapters are going to be coming out regularly now or should we be prepared for another wait?

Bout damn time, I've been waiting forever for this to update. This is brilliant btw, you have no idea how much I've anticipated this update.

Oh boy. I'm the worst with schedules. You should never, ever expect me to do anythin regularly. Of course, I AM aiming for an update schedule slightly more frequent than "every six months," but I'm tardy by nature and still a little busy. 'sides, gotta let writing take a little time. Nobody wants a rush job.

Next chapter should be up within the month, at the very least.

543406
Scratch that, no way this is gonna be done by the end of the week. I give it another 7-10 days.

Chapter!

This is what I meant when I said I'm the worst at schedules.

Wewt, great as always.
