Review: The Killers (1964) · 10:50pm Jul 8th, 2016

A stripped down, no-nonsense adaptation of Ernest Hemmingway's 1927 short-story, which had previously been adapted in 1946 by Robert Siodmak, and starring Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner, the 1964 version of The Killers is an effective and enjoyably straightforward film noir, directed with smooth efficiency by Don Siegel (Dirty Harry), and performed with skill by a clutch of great actors, such as Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, John Cassavetes, and, in his final role before entering politics,

Review: Enemy (2013) · 7:58pm Jun 24th, 2016

SPIDERS.

The best possible way to try and describe Denis Villeneuve's psychological thriller Enemy is as some strange, aberrant, yet utterly absorbing blend of David Lynch Lost Highway, Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut and Ingmar Bergman's Persona. Except with duplicate Jake Gyllenhaals, and gigantic spiders.

Episode review: "Rock Solid Friendship" · 10:36pm Apr 29th, 2017

Since her introduction in season 4, Maud Pie has made at least one appearance in every season, and every single one of those appearances is stronger than the last. By season 6's "The Gift of the Maud Pie," the writers had grown comfortable with subtly suggesting her emotions, and here, they've gone a step further and fleshed out her flaws and anxieties. She is rapidly becoming one of the absolute best characters in the entire show because of this, which makes it all the more disappointing that

That's all...? Warning spoilers. · 9:29am Apr 18th, 2017

So saw the premiere of season 7. It's cute and fun, but compared to previous seasons...lackluster. Nothing really happens at all.

Season 1 opening: The backstory of Equestria and nightmare night is given, Twilight and each of the mane six are introduced, Nightmare night/Luna is Introduced and fought, and by the end of the episode the whole basis for the rest of the season and series is established.

Hap Recommends Scribblefest #8: My Flight · 4:12pm Mar 25th, 2016

This story was introduced to me after reading Hat Man's reviews on other Scribblefest stories, and it immediately piqued my interest for a large number of reasons. The first was some similarities between this and my own entry, as both featured an Earth pony taking to the skies, as well as being more interested in the technical aspects of it, which appealed to my engineering background. I have, in fact, studied aerospace and find it very interesting.

Review: Manga Math Mysteries #2-8 · 12:30pm Jun 4th, 2016

No, it doesn't have little ponies, but it is something to review. And, since tabletop games and mathematics are tangentially linked educational media I thought it would a give me an excuse to set up a foundation (or at the very least an objective basis) for comparative media. Assuming, that is, I ever get around to reviewing the Ponyfinder campaign, kingmaker, friendship is roleplaying, failure is awesome, and by extension royal decree. To this end I am also reading Conquering Math Phobia, Math
