That's all...? Warning spoilers. · 9:29am Apr 18th, 2017
So saw the premiere of season 7. It's cute and fun, but compared to previous seasons...lackluster. Nothing really happens at all.
Season 1 opening: The backstory of Equestria and nightmare night is given, Twilight and each of the mane six are introduced, Nightmare night/Luna is Introduced and fought, and by the end of the episode the whole basis for the rest of the season and series is established.
season 2 opening: Discord is introduced, his backstory and past with the princesses is revealed, he traps the mane six in a maze and manages to corrupt them, they have to come back, defeat him and reinforce the power of their friendship and harmony.
Season 3 opening: The crystal kingdom and lord sombra are revealed, Cadence and Shinning armor get a chance to shine and there is a huge adventure/fight that establishes cadence and shinning armor as head of the Crystal kingdom and the crystal ponies for later seasons...
season 4 opening: Twilight is struggling to come to terms being an alicorn meanwhile the background between Luna and Celestia is revealed, as is their discovery of the elements and tree of harmony...which comes in later...and freeing the princesses from the dying/corrupted tree of harmony...which gives them the chest with the six keyholes which again plays an important role later on.
season 5 opening: Twilight and the gang encounter Starlight glimmer and her unique brand of, "magic" and, "friendship" leading to one of the more impressive and different kind of villains in the show...
season 6 opening: Umm well basically cadence and shining armors brat is a brat with super powers and that's it...
Season 7 opening: Luna has a hard time giving the b team from season 6 finale a medal, Celestia is trolling Twilight, while Twilight realizes starlight knows everything she can teach her about friendship etc. and nothing of real value or excitement and or importance is established...
The first five season openings all had something that either established some future plot point, character, and or purpose for the mane six, while also setting the tone and the theme for the rest of the season. The last two season finales have been meh, and have not really established that much for the season or any further plot points other then Flurry Heart, which is just going to lead to a Pinkie and the Cake twins recap theme.
I think All Bottled Up was better, but not extraordinary. Celestial Advice, for all the hype it had (first Celestia episode since... ever) was pretty... meh.
I want to believe this season is going to clean up the mess left by season 6. Because let's be honest, nothing can be worse than season 6.
4500694 I liked all bottled up becasue it was actually something interesting, for example i like how Starlight gets mad at Trixie and becasue of that her horn creates different kinds of cloud magic that when it gets too strong forces others to follow it's command. It hints back to Starlight's power of being able to control/manipulate ponies and it is interesting to see that her emotions trigger her magic like that.
I don't even mind that it was focusing on Trixie and Starlight who now seem to be main characters, i actually like that part, what kind of bugs me about it is how they're going the same route with Starlight that they did Twilight. The whole, "cutie map disappearing we need to find it before the gang gets back" really comes off as a recycled plot from seasons 1 and 2 where Twilight is trying to live up to Celestia's trust and not let her down.
Season six was alright but again nothing really impacted and or stood out, the season finale had much promise but it felt rushed and forced, and there was little build up to it. Once again the season six opening didn't have much behind it and or set anything else for the season.
Celestial Advice had a few cute moments, it has some interesting scenes, but like i said and you said it was meh, nothing really happened; no new villain was revealed, no new purpose, and or theme for the season was set, it was basically what i would have expected from a mid-season episode that didn't need much plot or purpose but too just make up an episode and be cute...
Yeah I'm hoping this season has a bit more oompth, and if they're going to focus on Starlight and Trixie and etc. i just hope they will give Starlight glimmer her own story/purpose, not just a re-hashed Twilight one.
