Review #60 - Changing Her Mind. Keeping Her Spine, Dead and Loving It · 3:30am Feb 22nd, 2017

At the beginning of this blog, I am going to promote a couple things, because, well, why not?
-The Cutest Butt Contest by Mr Allan (I voted for Vapor Trail).
-Time to Shine by Mr Allan.
-The Republic Rises by Mr Allan.
-Mr Allan's Collection.
-MLPmatthewl419's Collection.

Anyway, today's reviews:

Changing Her Mind. Keeping Her Spine by Foals Errand
Dead and Loving It by Trick Question

As always, I will put my down recommendations, but I truly hope that you to make the choice on whether to read a fic or not yourself.

Changing Her Mind. Keeping Her Spine by Foals Errand
(Comedy, Romance)
After Princess Luna's gentle kiss Twilight hadn't been able to feel anything but unsettled. She had gently tried to explain that she only had feelings for colts. That was when her beloved mentor had said it. "If you break her heart, I'll break your spine." Now Twilight was stuck. She really liked her spine! Hmm, perhaps being a Lesmare wouldn't be so bad!

Review
This one is much more of a slice of life fic than a comedy. There are still parts meant to be comedy, but they are somewhat lackluster. Twilight in this one seems, ok I guess. I am not entirely sure what to think of her character, but since I need to say it, I would go with bland. She doesn't really seem to have a character with depth. She still has one, just not a strong one. In fact, all of the characters seem this way, Twilight is just the most noticeable. I actually forgot this one existed for a good couple months... yes, I know what you're about to ask, and I think it is because of how little characterization there is. Everything is bland and shallow, and therefore forgettable... like a couple background ponies I know of.

But I shall continue. This one's greatest weakness is the lack of characterization. There is still characterization within this, but it is not strong enough to be notable.

Recommendation: Intermediate/ Worth Reading. (Low because of that weakness.)

Dead and Loving It by Trick Question
(Comedy, Dark)
Dying for Attention: Trixie is late to her own funeral.
Celestia's Vacation: Luna covers for her sister's absence.
A Deal to Die For: Applejack goes coffin shopping.

Review
Dying for Attention
This one is meant to be a comedy, and it is somewhat humorous the first time you read it, but it seems more like a slice of life fic than anything else. Trixie is more like the episode Magic Duel Trixie then the Season 6 Trixie, and yet still a bit off. Though that may be because of how little we get to see of her. Twilight, however, is actually quite close to the Season 5 Twilight... I'm not gonna go farther than that. This one, I forgot about as well, but once I saw the fic I remembered everything that happened within it.

Greatest weakness? It's too short. This really could have been longer, and that probably would have left more room for comedy and/ or darkness.

Recommendation: Intermediate.

Celestia's Vacation
This one is a slice of life story right up until the ending, where it magically transforms into a comedy. Celestia is definitely under stress in this one, or she just doesn't care about her country at all... quite possibly both. But, hey, this creates the plot, so I guess it works. Luna, though, Luna is such a troll. No, not the angry monster kind, but the jokester kind. Oh, and, remind me to never, ever, ever, ever get into a debate with Luna, for she will destroy me. This one suffers from the same affliction as Dying for Attention, you don't remember it exists until you see the fic, in which case you somewhat remember reading it at some point.

The greatest weakness of this one is how dialogue-heavy the beginning is. Normally, this wouldn't necessarily be a weakness, but in this case, it makes the beginning crazy boring.

Recommendation: Worth Reading. (Because the ending is hilarious.)

A Deal to Die For
This one is a slice of life fic through-and-through. There is a little bit of "ha ha, you deserved that" type comedy at the end, but really not much. Applejack seems really close to the Seasons 4/5/6 Applejack, which is a testament to the author's skill, which Trick Question does have, it just isn't necessarily demonstrated in the best way for these. Flim and Flam are slightly mild compared to the show's version, but still close enough to be good characters. Nice job, mate. And as with the others, you will probably forget it exists for awhile, but you will not forget the plotline.

The greatest weakness of this one is that its plot is kinda empty. I mean, you can, in some ways, predict what is going to happen at the end. But otherwise, it does an alright job at being good.

Recommendation: Intermediate/Worth Reading. (Mostly because it's a bit empty.)

Random Thought at the End of This Blog: That's right, only two today... but surprise! It was actually 4 fics. Didn't see that coming when you clicked to read this, did you?
