It is often said that every equation put into a popular science book will halve its sales. It is known that this is not true. But it's such a fun anecdote to put in the introduction, so we all keep repeating it.
I read that scientists, by using magnets, had 'turned off' the threat centres in people's brains, and that this made them 'change their attitudes towards immigrants.' Obviously, the stunning revelation that people don't like immigrants because they feel threatened by them is one that will echo down the ages as a revelation made possible only by scientific brilliance, but given that such experiments are likely to continue, I'd like to make a few predictions.

It's time for another LTUE (Life, The Universe, and Everything) report! And this time, not in place of Monday's Being a Better Writer post!
Why, you may ask? Okay, and you may be asking "What's LTUE?" as well. So, in reverse order then.
So the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition released today and I've been having a blast replaying through ME 1. These are game I haven't been able to play in over 7 years. Going to a Wiki to research information on ME is fine, but experiencing the game is so much better.
Alright, here's an odd request for y'all.
A friend of mine is working on a query letter for her book. Industry standards means she needs to compare her book to other books on the market. None of my writing group could think of appropriate comparisons, so I thought I'd ask here.
She's writing a medical/science thriller. The comparative book can be a little loose, but ideally not that dissimilar. The comparison can not be;
High up in the Brighthouse cupola, Zipp, Sunny, Izzy and Pipp stood bathed in the rainbow light field surrounding the unity crystals.
Chapter 5 has been renamed 'The Shepard' and the update is posted. Overall the chapter became shorter by about 1.1K words. I had to trim a lot of the fat off of it and rewrite quite a bit to make it more consistent both in tone and flow (I.e. less needless exposition).
Following my cursing Friendship One, I somehow managed to crack [sic] out this first draft of potential idiocy:
To say CMDR Flood was at a loss was... well probably an overstatement, given the losses she would be at later on in life. Actually, when you thought about it, she was indeed at a loss, just not as big as the losses looming in her future.
Chapter 6 'Broken' has been updated and thus I have officially caught up to the revisions I made over five years previous. This time, however, I am back better than ever.
It did get me to wonder how my story got as popular as it did, when every chapter I rewrite is super full of cringe. Seriously, what was it about ME:C that drew you all in? If someone else had posted a story like mine, all those years ago, I would have made a hard pass and swiped left.
The process is REALLY slow. I finished all my work on this 3 years ago.

But no more science for me. Now I build houses and driveways... and rip them apart too! It's a sort of yin-yang thing I've got going here.

(For anyone who hasn't played Elite: Dangerous, it's actually the "frame shift drive". Except, y'know, the voice acting gives rise to this particular mondegreen. And, hey, who knows but frame shift is magic, too.
