Friendship is Card Games: Trixie and the Razzle-Dazzle Ruse

We return to the pony novels this week, and hopefully a better showing from the titular mare. Last time we saw Trixie in one of these, G. M. Berrow was channeling the fandom circa 2011 and making her and Gilda the designated antagonists of the piece. Let’s see what she’s up to this time.

Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

I have had barbecue. Pie and ice cream await. Someone's setting off fireworks and they aren't even legal in this state.

For all the issues embroiling this world, this nation, and this fandom, it's nice to remember the simple pleasures in life.

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans, and a pleasant Saturday to everyone else.

And a happy 4th to you too.

Wear the mask. Don't wear the mask. Worry. Don't worry.

Be Kind. It won't spread the sickness

Happy 4th as well, may we have many more.

Happy 4th to you, and may we have many to celebrate without cause to worry and agonize over.

Happy 4th to you, too! Sounds like you're having a great day!

Happy 4th!

Happy 4th of July, FOME :heart:

Happy Independence Day to you too, FOME.

Happy 4th, FoME! Hope you enjoy dessert! :pinkiehappy:

It always the little things that make life good or bad at the end of the day

Happy Independence Day!

💥:rainbowwild:💥

Had a wonderful 4th, grandson was over, took a long stroll this evening to watch the citizens blow off fireworks (my rough estimate is $250k/hr for the immediate vicinity, tonight and last night and probably tomorrow night) and had ice cream to top it off.

Um... does a long walk for your health still count if you stop at Sonic halfway through and get a softserve cone?

Happy Socially Acceptable Pyrotechnics Day!

No, no, no NO! I see it all over the place and it infuriates me to no end! The date isn't important. It is what we celebrate on the date that matters. There is nothing special about the fourth day of July. What matters is that is the day we Americans celebrate having signed the Declaration of Independence and is thus Independence Day.

This is the only holiday that is on a consistent date that I can think of that this happens to and it ticks me off. You don't ask people "What are you going to dress up as for October 31st?" or "Are you visiting family for December 25th?" or "Are you going to stay up for January 1st?". So why is it that Independence Day, arguably the most important holiday to the very nation itself, you know, considering that without having done the whole "declaring independence" thing we wouldn't even be a nation is relegated to a date with no context?

Why? Just, why?

Dunno. Calling national holidays by their date rather than the official name seems to be a cross-border thing, actually. The anniversary of General Ignacio Zaragoza's victory over the invading French army, one of the most important moments in Mexican national history, is usually just called the Cinco de Mayo. Liberation Day is usually just referred to as 25th April in Italy, too.

Let's see... 4th of July, quatorze juillet, and then there's my national holiday and my birthday.

July is a busy month. If only ole' Julius had foreseen that.

Belated happy 4th to you. Have fun, be safe. Don't do anything that'd make Twilight Sparkle facehoof, don't do anything that'd make Uncle Iroh groan.

Well, you know, tea-related incidents exempted, for obvious reasons.

Happy (er, slightly belated) Independence Day/Fourth of July! :)

Cinco de Mayo?
In Judaism, a few holidays or fast days are just named for their dates: the minor holiday of the fifteenth of Shevat, the major fast of the Ninth of Av, and the minor fast of the Tenth of Tevet.
Wikipedia also lists some others, including May 9th, the Soviet (now celebrated in many formerly-Soviet countries) Victory Day, and the Fifth of November, i.e. Guy Fawkes' Night.

Edited to delete a sentence fragment.

Happy Independence Day!

I'm mildly, but pleasantly, surprised that there wasn't an alien invasion this time.

There are hills worth dying on, and then there's that. Cool your jets, Vlad.

This is something I am very passionate about and is a hill I am very much willing to die on.

Mister Rosewater talks about names having power, in that by something having a name you can talk about it easier and the name given to something also carries meaning in and of itself.
By allowing Independence Day to just be called by the date it falls on it will gradually lose meaning and just become a day of bar-be-ques and fireworks.
I'd rather not rely on the American Public School System to teach people about the significance of the date when it's easy to push back against the short-hand.

I'd been dropping in to thank you for not doing it then seeing all but one comment doing the thing I hate with a passion hit my buttons.

I will admit that I could have been a bit less keyed up about it and I did try and stay civil but this is a topic I will fight for anytime I see it and I feel I can maybe try and push some change. If I can get even one other person to see why calling the holiday Independence Day and not just the date is important then they can help me get others to do so and so on and maybe it'll get reversed.
While there had always been some people and places calling it by the date this really hasn't been a major thing most people and places were doing until just a few years ago. I still remember seeing "Independence Day Sale" more often than "4th of July Sale" and my memory is crap so it couldn't have been too long ago. Or maybe I'm having conformation bias.
It is something I feel needs to stop sooner and not later.

Cinco de Mayo is actually another perfect example of this. I knew it means "May the 5th" but I had no idea what it was actually about until I looked it up. It says something that my top Google result in the "People also ask" section is "What is Cinco de Mayo celebrated for?". At least it does to me,

5301620
For well over 2000 years, my people have observed a national day of mourning. We don't call that day "Mourning Day," "Destruction of the Temple(s) Day," "Day of Calamities," or anything like that. We call it "Tish`a B'Av," which translates to "Av [the name of that month] 9th."

When a day is sufficiently important, you know what it means, even if you don't have a special name for it.

If you want more secular examples, I'd argue that Americans all (at least ought to) know the significance of December 7th, June 6th, and September 11th. We don't need to call them "Pearl Harbor Day," "D Day," and "Terrorist Attacks Day." The dates are enough.
