If shovels breaking when used as shovels wasn't enough, my phone has decided to update itself into an expensive brick. Apparently, the latest update is called "don't find cell towers."

The good news is that I have another path to the internet.

The bad news is that it can't find the internet, either.

Point is, y'all might not be getting any kind of updates or anything for a little while, till this gets sorted out. And in the end, we'll have another fun blog post about things that don't work!

Y'all are going to be on your own to add pony pics to this one, I'm afraid.

--Admiral Biscuit

EDIT: Internet is back up! Turns out that the antenna fell out of my phone somehow, and all they had to do was plug it back in.

My other problem was defective equipment, which also probably got resolved (that one’s still a bit in the air).

Apparently, I misunderstood what they told me, because it turns out they (my old service) will send a phone but they'll charge me for it.

It's times like this that I think the Amish might be really onto something.

Ah. Wonder if it's mucked up the setting for whether it should use 2G or 3G and decided "Lol none!" was the answer.

See what happens when you post devil ponies. They took your webs.

Wishing you good luck in your phone endeavors. I am curious, what make and model is the busted phone?

Good luck, Biscuit!!

Good luck on the phone. Youd think they would at least give an option to have more efficint and reliable offerings as technology improves, but, well, remember that thing about where someone asked about what if cars had advanced the same way as computers? Shouldnt they have said, computers are a million times more powerful, but take longer to respond to the keyboard because every action has to be sent over the internet to a different country to be analyzed before being sent back to be displayed?

Every time you tuned the steering wheel, another country looked at the camreas, checked the weather, and then told the car it should actually be going in reverse?

Well, at least I don't have to worry about that happening to my phone. I also don't have to worry about getting charged for data. Because the phone is apparently locked to the wrong APN.

See, originally, I had a Motorola C139. Decent little phone, pretty good reception, went over a week on a charge when it was new (and nearly a week on one charge after 9+ years of use on the original battery). But then the cell towers started breaking and just not seeing it. Every now and then, a new tower would break and never see it again (but all other towers could still talk to it great, so I know it was the towers breaking, not the phone breaking).

So I picked up a used Casio C811 from someone I know for basically free. Had to get a new SIM card from the AT&T store because my old Cingular SIM was too big to fit the slot in the new phone (though it did work with an adapter ribbon I tried for testing purposes, but the cover wouldn't close with that arrangement, so new card it was.)

Every time I go past the lock screen, I get a big "Warning - This SIM card is from an unknown source." popup (apparently the AT&T store is an unknown source?), but I can make and recieve calls (and text messages on the rare occasion that I desire to), so meh. And it has WiFi if I really want to internet with it for whatever reasons.

*raises hand*
I have a question. If you can't connect to the internet, how as you able to make a blog post?

Oof
Good luck.
Although, I don't know if/how you'll see this...

By the sheer will of the people.

Ah, the Internet. Always a joy. :facehoof:

5279536
Lots and lots of semaphore. Biscuit's been flapping those arms so hard, he's ready to take flight :rainbowdetermined2:.

5279495
Nah, see it's because all of the 5G towers took off from their nesting sites to spread the 'Rona through their chemtrails. But, since the 5G towers were also emitting Interwebz rays while in their nests, that got disrupted. They can only do one of those at a time, you see.

5279483
That was disturbing.

5279484
So was this.
5279496
This would have been disturbing, but I saw the above first.
5279498
Okay. I laughed at this one.
5279536
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought of that.

My Mum's phone is working hard on that. I've literally deleted every app that could be deleted (other than Whatsapp), and my mother religiously flushes Whatsapp media twice a week, yet we keep getting "low storage" messages every other day. I'm already looking at replacement phones for as soon as we feel safe with her going outside (Mexico is in exponential behaviour, so not anytime soon).

that has to be a rotten apple of some kind. they are known for becoming bricks.

5279614
Sometimes resetting the phone to factory settings does the trick because that also smashes the hidden files. But please make sure to back up your personal data first, otherwise there will be woe. :pinkiecrazy:

Next time it will be when cars don't car.

Andoid is just as bad. Last update bricked my Text messaging. Seriously tho, I wish they stopped pushing out untested garbage updates for everything.

Oh. How nice. Sorry, Admiral Biscuit; good luck getting things sorted out!

Stay safe Biscuit, we'll be waiting for you.

5279713
true Android has it's problems but nothing like apple that cant even make something with out it blowing up or burning down.

I would ask what he is using but he probably cannot reply

Sorry to hear that,

if you need to think about a replacement, how about this:

Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2

Serves me well for years, it´s my night shift, fanfic reading machine. Software is pretty basic, the battery is strong and it is very reliable.

Hope you don't mind.

5279483 5279484
I already regret letting y’all do that. :derpytongue2:

5279486
I’ll be honest, I’ve had generally good results with Sprint. My few issues (such as the latest ones) have been solved in a day or two, at little to no cost to me (I do have phone insurance). And where I live, their coverage is pretty good. Obviously, that won’t be the case everywhere.

One nice thing is that I still got unlimited datas, which is good becuase I use a lot of them.

5279491
Honestly, when an EMP takes out all technology, they’ll be the ones who won’t notice.

5279495
Turns out the antenna fell out of its socket. Probably had been working its way loose for a while, and it was just a coincidence that it finally got really bad shortly after an update. (The phone gets dropped a lot, so I can see how it could happen.)

5279498

See what happens when you post devil ponies. They took your webs.

I know, right?

5279504

Wishing you good luck in your phone endeavors. I am curious, what make and model is the busted phone?

It’s a Samsung S8+

It is fixed now; turns out the antenna fell out of its socket.

5279509
Thank you! After hours of driving and three Sprint stores, it’s finally fixed! Huzzah!

5279512

Good luck on the phone. Youd think they would at least give an option to have more efficint and reliable offerings as technology improves, but, well, remember that thing about where someone asked about what if cars had advanced the same way as computers?

Turns out it was actually a mechanical problem--the antenna fell out.

Shouldnt they have said, computers are a million times more powerful, but take longer to respond to the keyboard because every action has to be sent over the internet to a different country to be analyzed before being sent back to be displayed?

Well, that isn’t true for everything.

Every time you tuned the steering wheel, another country looked at the camreas, checked the weather, and then told the car it should actually be going in reverse?

To be honest, if you’ve been reading along with the automotive network blogs (and I know you have ), while another country doesn’t get involved, there are often multiple computers that process turning the steering wheel. Heck, on the disaster of a Ford we’ve got in the shop right now, there’s the Steering Column Control Module, the Power Steering Control Module, and I’m sure the Powertrain Control Module and Antilock Brakes/Vehicle Stability System all know about it, too. Not to mention that the Supplemental Restraints System wants to know about vehicle dynamics, too, in case it wants to fire the airbags.

5279525

Well, at least I don't have to worry about that happening to my phone. I also don't have to worry about getting charged for data. Because the phone is apparently locked to the wrong APN.

I don’t know what an AMP is, but that sounds bad.

One of the reasons they initially thought it was the SIM card in mind (turns out it was the antenna) was that the phone knew if one was in or not, but then whenever you tried to do things with the SIM card, it wouldn’t let you.

It’s possible that some update to the system over the years made the SIM card number you have appear as an invaid number or something, I don’t know. I guess if it works despite the warning, I’d keep rolling with it.

5279536

I have a question. If you can't connect to the internet, how as you able to make a blog post?

While everybody else’s answers were better than mine, I sat baking in the sun in the parking lot across the street from our local library--closed because of COVID--and used their one bar of WiFi I could get.

5279548
Well, when I get the internets back--which I did, yay!--I’ll see it.

5279557
I wouldn’t even use it, but there are ponies on it, so. . .

5279566
I could go looking, my Boy Scout Handbook actually has semaphore signals in it.

5279614

My Mum's phone is working hard on that. I've literally deleted every app that could be deleted (other than Whatsapp), and my mother religiously flushes Whatsapp media twice a week, yet we keep getting "low storage" messages every other day. I'm already looking at replacement phones for as soon as we feel safe with her going outside (Mexico is in exponential behaviour, so not anytime soon).

That was actually one thing I was worried about--if the cell phone stores would even be open. We’re . . . well, out of exponential behavior in Michigan, but hardly out of the woods, despite what some people seem to think.

There might be ways to do it mostly online, I dunno. Especially for a new phone. If not, well, keep safe and hope the phone keeps working.

5279654
Nope, an Android, and it turns out that it was a mechanical problem, not a software issue. The antenna fell out.

5279711
I work in a shop, I see lots of cars that won’t car.

Like this Fusion we’ve got that has a partial network failure, for reasons unknown.

5280232
Glad to hear that it's fixed!

5279713
I did find out from reading forums that the LTE calling feature was problematic on the S8s (which is what I have), although my phone took that update just fine.

It turns out that it was a mechanical problem; the antenna fell out.
