My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - "Movie Magic" Special (SPOILERS) · 4:02pm Jul 1st, 2017

In which the girls take a turn as Mystery Incorporated on a movie set.

We open with Rainbow Dash nitpicking during a shoot of the new Daring Do movie.

The girls are all exploring the studio on their own, seeing the things they want to see. Each group runs afoul of something off-kilter: a bitchy diva lead star, litter on the set, and a missing cupcake fountain. (Uhh.) They also meet the director's overly enthusiastic niece, Juniper Montage.

The film is suffering from setbacks that are stressing out the director. During the next scene filming, the volcano set collapses, and Rainbow Dash discovers that the props A.K. Yearling designed for the film are missing.

With constant disasters plaguing the shoot, the director is having a meltdown. Meanwhile, Twilight Sparkle goes into Velma Dinkley mode. Jinkies!

Yeah, this is basically the Equestria Girls doing a Scooby Doo episode. Complete with the talking dog!

While trying to find clues and chasing the mysterious cloaked figure, the Rainbooms get mistaken for the actors playing the Power Ponies, leading to a costumed chase scene with a proper Scooby montage.

Oh, and Sunset in the Mane-iac costume. :rainbowlaugh:

Anyway, obvious plot is obvious: Juniper Montage is the culprit. Her motive? She hates the actress playing Daring Do. And she would've gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for those meddling girls and their dog!

Also, the diva actress turns out not to be such a bitch after all, and is more than happy to finish the Daring Do movie once her scheduling conflict clears up. And the girls get to be extras in the movie as a reward for their help!

10/10, this one was hilarious and fun and full of all kinds of FUN!

Spikey-dikey-doo!

Definitely an improvement over the first one.

Yeah, whenever Juniper claimed that she would have been Daring Do if not for them, my reply was thus: "No, you wouldn't have. Either the role would have been recast with another professional actress, or the movie would have been canceled entirely."

i kinda feel bad for juniper though shes going to try to get back at the humane 7 thats for sure

4588835 Agreed, though it is surprising to learn the first special was originally supposed to take place BEFORE "Legend of Everfree", but scheduling arrangements (most likely Hasbro wanted another full length movie to be completed instead of one stand alone episode that was supposed to take the place of the tie in shorts) caused it be delayed and come AFTER "Legend of Everfree". Makes me curious what the original draft was, and why the girls were raising funds (perhaps that may also be why they delayed the special).

Oh, and Sunset in the Mane-iac costume.

I can't be the only one who thought she looked hot as the mane-iac, can I?

4588844
Ah, the things a skin-tight catsuit can do...:twilightsheepish:

Yeah, this was a Scooby Doo homage, complete with lame mystery and obvious villain. At least Scooby Doo will introduce decoy suspects, this special had two options and one is obviously a red herring.

4588844 Sunset always looks hot.

4588839

why the girls were raising funds

To go on the Camp Everfree trip to start with. As for the changes, Ishi says that they just replaced dialogue concerning fundraising for a trip to Camp Everfree with dialogue concerning fundraising to fix up Camp Everfree, and that was it.

4588837
Oh yeah, she has "recurring antagonist" written all over her.

4588844
ALL the girls in those skintight outfits, man. H_H

Yeah this EQG short scream Scooby doo all over the place and the good ones as a matter of fact, so more point to this short.

4588862 Ah, thanks for clearing that up. So it wasn't much of a change, but it would've paralleled their struggle to that of Crystal Prep's.

Well, Legend of Everfree was pretty much a textbook Scooby Doo movie. Meddling kids and dog investigate a mystery and have a brush with the genuinely supernatural. It's only logical that the most direct sequel to it among the specials maintain the theme.

Rainbow Dash had some wonderful facial expressions this go around, though Sci-Twi had at least one great one.

I couldn't help but note that while splitting up, Sunset took the time to address Spike the Dog. She really didn't have to, but she did anyway. In fact, I feel like Spike the Dog is treated better than Spike the Dragon is sometimes. So that's interesting.

I can't say that the plot was anything to write home about, but I had a lot of fun watching it. The characters sold it, as per usual.

So, if Spike's Scooby and Sci-Twi's Velma, I guess that makes Rainbow Daphne, Pinkie's Shaggy and Sunset's Freddie. All they needed was a 60's-era song playing during the chase scene to make this really Scooby-esque.

Dashie, as a horse or as a human, is always adorable when she's geeking out over Daring Do. She better watch it, though -- directors have fired and banned extras from their sets for less than Dashie does.

Now I'm hyped for the last of the EqG one-shots. I'm curious about Starlight Glimmer in Human-land. (Yes, I know the episode's out there already, but I'm waiting for the U.S. release.)

All that was missing was an overly complicated trap and pulling off the mask (or in this case hood) so everyone can say the culprit's name in shock.

4588935
You or somepony else could always write a story in which that happens?

4588963
He was kind of a pastiche, yeah. There was also one who was Ron Howard in there.

4588963

I'd say Spielberg, at least in his younger days.

Yeah, this is basically the Equestria Girls doing a Scooby Doo episode. Complete with the talking dog!

Which as an old Scooby Doo makes me want more of this.

Here's a question for you: Were they wearing their regular clothes underneath? Or did the overeager stagehand forcibly change their costumes? O_O

4589045
Considering how skintight those costumes were, I'd say someone was overeager.

I now find myself somewhat jealous of that stagehand...

4589056
4589045
Boobs and butts were touched! BOOBS AND BUTTS WERE TOUCHED!!

4589031
Don't you mean Scooby Doo fan? :raritywink:

4589060
"We need an adult!"
"I am an adult!"

4589056
Poor guy. Not only did he got fired, but he scored himself a date with Chris Hansen.

At least Spike was in character and didn't say things like "Let's celebrate prematurely!!" or "But I'd FORAGED!!!"

Also, the diva actress turns out not to be such a bitch after all

Ehhh. Didn't it turn out that the diva actress was desperately trying to get out of that charity function her manager set up to burnish her reputation? She's not a criminal, but she doesn't come out of that looking great.

4589226
No, she was trying to get out of shooting a documentary that wasn't what she thought it was.

4589231 Oh, my mistake.

I really did get that vibe from the episode. I did enjoy the part where the girls were playing the power ponies. And that cupcake fountain. I got kind of a George Romero feel from the director. Also, Juniper messed up.
