I Could Never Stop Loving You - Starlight Fan

When dealing with the Pony Of Shadows, Starlight was constantly kicked down by Starswirl with no support from Twilight, yet somehow Starlight still loved the alicorn.

And That’s A Promise

Twilight took a glance at the sunset at her balcony, it was a very pretty sight but not as beautiful as the pony next to her, Starlight Glimmer.

Twilight felt blessed and confused as to how she was able to win Starlight’s heart. She heard many answers from her friends.

”I ain’t surprised you two were able to get together, it’s clear she really cares about you.”

”Honestly darling, you’re obviously a sight for sore eyes and Starlight can see that for herself.”

”You’re a super fun pony Twilight. Anypony with a brain would be able to see that being with you would really brighten their lives.”

”I mean, you basically saved her life when she was at her lowest. I’d probably fall for somepony who did that for me. Just saying.”

”Well… she does seem to really admire you for how compassionate you are.”

Though in all honesty, Twilight felt she didn’t deserve her. Yes, she was the Princess Of Friendship and all, but when it came to being loyal to her friends, she didn’t really demonstrate it the best way.

After all, in the Storm King invasion, she didn’t place enough trust in her friends and that caused a rift between them because she was careless enough to steal from another kingdom and hot headed enough to drive her friends away.

Starlight was not immune to this lack of loyalty either. Even though it happened before she even opened her school, bringing back the Pillars brought some bittersweet memories.

She was terrible to Starlight that day, from ignoring her input on everything to outright gaslighting her when she tried to plead her case to reform Stygian to Starswirl.

Even when Starswirl spat on the stance of redemption with “Once a villain, always a villain,” even when Starlight left the library crying at the thought if things played out differently she might not have gotten her second chance, Twilight never thought to interfere because she was so obsessed with idolizing Starswirl. Not until it was almost too late to save Stygian from his inner darkness.

Spike had accidentally let it slip that despite Starlight forgiving Twilight, she had a layer of doubt that Twilight would somehow abandon her. Starlight was able to get through that before the Festival Of Friendship but Twilight felt the guilt creeping back again now that she was dating Starlight.

She had no idea why she had said yes to being Starlight’s girlfriend, it felt so right at the time. Perhaps she thought somehow that she’d be able to love Starlight just as much as Starlight loved her. Yet Twilight couldn’t protect her from a filly and had to rely on her students to save her.

“Starlight.” Twilight spoke with a sigh.

“Yeah Twilight.” Starlight turned to her girlfriend with a smile.

“I let Starswirl disregard your suggestions to try and talk to Stygian in the past and made you doubt our friendship.” Twilight said softly.

“So what makes you so sure about dating me? Aren’t you afraid of abandonment?” Twilight asked morosely.

Starlight gained a look of concern when she said that and simply gave Twilight a soft smile to reassure her, “Twilight, I already forgave you for that and got past it months ago.”

“I was just thinking… what if I end up doing that to you again? I know you love me Starlight, but between the two of us I can’t help but feel that I’m less loyal to you than you are to me. I flat out yelled at Pinkie Pie saying how I would have been better off without friends like her and that was just a month after what I did to you. What if I do something worse, breaking your heart beyond repair? I-I wouldn’t be able to handle that.” Twilight told Starlight with a tearful gaze, but Starlight was quick to wipe the tears away.

“Twilight, I know you wouldn’t do that to me.” Starlight smiled warmly much to Twilight’s surprise and before Twilight could continue speaking, Starlight kept going, “You’re the same mare who took a chance on me despite all the horrible things I did in my village and to you and your friends because you felt there was good in me. Even after all of my screw ups, you never gave up on me. You accept me for who I am, and wanted me to stick around after you felt I no longer needed to be. Besides Twilight, why would you be so afraid of hurting me?”

“Because I love you!” Twilight said without thinking, causing her to blush furiously,
“I’m sorry. That was way too forward. We barely began dating and-“

Starlight silenced her with a kiss, surprising Twilight but she quickly kissed back and felt pure bliss as she did so.

They then parted lips and Starlight grasped Twilight’s hooves, “I love you too and I don’t care how long we’ve been together, I think the amount of experiences we’ve been through together speak for themselves.”

“Really? But what about-“ Twilight began before Starlight embraced the alicorn.

“Twilight, despite all the hurt I felt when dealing with Starswirl and the Pony Of Shadows, just know one thing, I always loved you, I’ve never stopped and I never will no matter what.” Starlight smiled upwards at her before continuing to hug Twilight.

Twilight was almost flabbergasted by this, Starlight loved her? Even after what Twilight made her go through? It felt so wrong, a common pony forming an attraction with a princess was seen by the public as a terrible idea. The pony infatuated with them would always feel like they weren’t worthy of the alicorn or feel they could be easily replaced and as she saw firsthand, she easily could do that to Starlight.

Although, Starlight did once say she wasn’t a princess-princess plus Starlight was more than just a regular citizen.

“I’ll never stop loving you either Starlight.” Twilight finally embraced her lover, happily letting a tear glide from her face.

Awww! It’s adorable! I like your writing style! Followed!

Nice to see more stories about the shadow play episode. Good work

It’s my favorite plot bunny to play with. It was so awful yet so forgivable that I can make so many stories about it.

I love Starlight sm. That episode had me PISSED

I feel like the canon of the series really stifles your creativity sometimes.

For example, I was all in excited and we got the regret over movie and shadow play and blah blah blah.

I like your sweet stuff, it's really heart warming, but the recollection of transgressions from the show can get a bit tedious.

Still, a decent one shot.

Twilight took a glance at the sunset at her balcony, it was a very pretty sight but not as beautiful as the pony next to her, Starlight Glimmer.

so true

After all, in the Storm King invasion, she didn’t place enough trust in her friends and that caused a rift between them because she was careless enough to steal from another kingdom and hot headed enough to drive her friends away.

but she needed to do that for the movie to happen!

Even when Starswirl spat on the stance of redemption with “Once a villain, always a villain,” even when Starlight left the library crying at the thought if things played out differently she might not have gotten her second chance, Twilight never thought to interfere because she was so obsessed with idolizing Starswirl. so true actually

“I’ll never stop loving you either Starlight.” Twilight finally embraced her lover, happily letting a tear glide from her face.

aww!

loved how sweet this was! and it’s usually Starlight who is the one in the relationship dealing with feelings of guilt and self-worth, so it’s interesting to see that reversed here with the times in the canon that Twilight unlearned her previous lessons and did her friends wrong. thank you for writing!

I’m normally not one for color-coded dialogue, but it is an effective way to attribute dialogue without burning word count. On the other hand, the character voices were distinct enough that you could’ve pulled it off without bothering.

She had no idea why she had said yes to being Starlight’s girlfriend, it felt so right at the time.

Rarely a good sign there. It’s one step removed from the characters realizing that the author’s doing the equivalent of pushing two dolls together and saying “Now kiss.”

I always loved you, I’ve never stopped and I never will no matter what.

”Even when you trapped me in your village’s propaganda hut?”
“I have issues, Twilight, this shouldn’t be news.”

You spent so much time going over canon events that you almost no time left for why Starlight fell for Twilight, and none at all for the other way around. And this is one that really needs some mutual justification to keep it from feeling like Starlight falling for her teacher, or worse, her parole officer. Really, any romance for a couple not already established by canon is a poor choice for this context; the need to justify the choice eats most of the needed word count. Sorry, but this just fell flat for me.

Yeah… I gotta rely on fanon more often. Thanks for the advice.

To be clear, there's nothing wrong with original pairings in a vacuum. It's just that when you have so little space to work with, it's better to go with something where the foundation is already in place.
