To answer your questions, first it depends on your definition of a happy ending. If you mean does everyone else on Earth get to continue to live, then yes there's a happy ending. If you mean for the girls specifically sorry there really isn't one.
Second a sequel, I wouldn't be opposed to it. Although if everyone is interested I have an idea for a handbook for the facility itself. This handbook would completely cover what's happening, and why. I left it a bit more ambiguous than the inspiration because I wanted everyone to draw on their own conclusions. However if you're interested in seeing the handbook I'll add a chapter specifically dedicated to it
But if you're wanting a full on sequel I suppose I can make one. Although I'd love to see what someone else might come up for the now changed Sour Sweet and Second Person
